Goal 1 Provide students comprehensive and accessible instructional opportunities through community based education, dual enrollment, academic transfer, technical education, health science, and work force development programs. To meet the Required threshholds set the Accreditation Review Council on Education in Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (ARC/STSA) for CST Pass Rate (70%). 71.4% of Class of passed the certification exam. Must continue to meet established threshold of 70%. (National mean=72%) Summer 2014 NA OVERALL RESULTS Additional course material review to prepare for certification. The practice tests will be made available to students. CST Certification Pass Rates A 73.3% pass rate (threshold 70%) was achieved. All areas tested at 70% or greater except A&P (63%), which continues to be the weakest area. Average remains at 64%. Discuss anatomy in SUR 102 lab during scenarios and instrument review sections. Students to take a Spring mid semester Practice Exam from National Board for Surgical Technology/Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) remained stable and within threshold established by ARC/STSA. 2% Improvement Anatomy & Physiology still remains lowest area. 1/4
DISTANCE EDUCATION RESULTS (if applicable to outcome) No Supporting File Number: Year: Type: : Institutional Goal: Graduate Competencies: Initial Assessment: Scheduled Completion Date: Budget Amount: Action Plan: Measure: 2 Student Learning Students will demonstrate an understanding of proper surgical procedures by documenting and verifying case requirement of 120 surgical cases to meet graduation requirements. Goal 1 Provide students comprehensive and accessible instructional opportunities through community based education, dual enrollment, academic transfer, technical education, health science, and work force development programs. Each student must verify that they have obtained surgical cases required by the Accreditation Review Council on Education in Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (ARCSTSA) of 120 Surgical Cases in specific categories. Class of 2013 had 100% compliance. Students must 100% meet case requirements to graduate. Cases must be monitored and verified based on counting criteria (first scrub, second scrub, observation roles, as well as defined case types). Summer 2014 No OVERALL RESULTS 1. Students are assigned to clinical sites to obtain required cases. 2. Students document cases on an electronic device each case they participate in. 3. Facility staff will grade their skill for each individual case. 4. Cases will be uploaded into Canvas where they will be analyzed weekly by faculty. 5. Students will be moved to another facility if specific cases are not attainable. 6. Faculty will use IPAD/Wireless computer with HanDBase program to access student records directly from students when at clinical site or college. will be measured by an analysis of clinical experiences using performance evaluation tool (Faculty created based on 6th Core Curriculum/ARC/STSA requirements) 100% of students achieved required cases. 10 of 16 (63%) students had to be relocated to get all their cases (or so that others could get theirs). Movement of students slows down case achievement on a short turn basis. 2/4
Instructors will work closely with facilities to move students as little as possible. Will monitor again Spring 2015 for improvement by moving students less times. DISTANCE EDUCATION RESULTS (if applicable to outcome) Supporting File Attachment SUR 1314 Case Requirements 6th Core Curriculum.pdf Number: Year: Type: : Institutional Goal: Graduate Competencies: Initial Assessment: Scheduled Completion Date: Budget Amount: Action Plan: Measure: 3 Student Learning Students will be able to recognize surgical instruments and pass instrument identification tests the first time 100% of the time. Goal 1 Provide students comprehensive and accessible instructional opportunities through community based education, dual enrollment, academic transfer, technical education, health science, and work force development programs. 100% of students will pass ten specific instrument tests on first try. Instrument lab tests for Fall 2012 required 5 of the 10 tests be repeated (50%). 67% of students (12/18) passed instrument tests the first time. Instruments unavailable in the lab were difficult to learn with photos only. Summer 201 $3,000 OVERALL RESULTS 1. Students will be taught instruments in each specialty, using discussion, demonstration, textbook, and hands on use. 2. Instruments will be displayed for student studying during each specialty. 3. Students will be tested on instrument identification for each specialty. Instrument identification test results including number of times an instrument test must be repeated. 12 of 18 (67%) Students passed skills on first try. 169 of 180 (94%) individual tests were passed on first try (6% failed). 1. Increase instrumentation in specialty areas for improved instrument identification. 2. Create more scenarios/exercises using specialty instruments. 3/4

6 th Curriculum for Surgical Technology Changes with Case Counts Surgical Rotation Case Requirements: All programs are now required to meet a minimum case requirement of 120 cases. Students are required to complete 30 cases in General Surgery. Twenty of the cases must be in the First Scrub Role. Students are required to complete 90 cases in various surgical specialties. 60 must be in the First Scrub Role and evenly distributed between a minimum of 5 surgical specialties. However, 15 is the maximum number of cases that can be counted in any one surgical specialty. The Surgical Technology is required to verify through the surgical rotation documentation of the student s progression in First and Second Scrubbing surgical procedures of increased complexity as they progress through the program. 10 diagnostic endoscopy cases may be applied toward the maximum number of second scrub cases. 5 vaginal delivery cases may be applied toward the maximum number of second scrub cases. How to count/record cases: Student must meet the five criteria in order to count/document the case in the First Scrub Role. If one of the five criteria is not met, the case must be recorded in the Second Scrub Role as long as the five criteria for Second Scrub Role are met, or it would then be documented as observation. First Scrub Role: Student shall perform the following duties with proficiency. 1. Verify supplies and Equipment Needed for the surgical procedure 2. Set-up the sterile field with instruments, supplies, equipment, medication(s) and solutions needed for the procedure. 3. Perform counts with the circulator prior to procedure and before the incision is closed. 4. Pass instruments and supplies to the sterile surgical team members during the procedure. 5. Maintain Sterile Technique as measured by recognized breaks in technique and demonstrate knowledge of how to correct with appropriate technique. Second Scrub Role: defined as the student who is at the sterile field who has not met the criteria for the first scrub role, but actively participates in the surgical procedure by completing any of the following: 1. Sponging 2. Suctioning 3. Cutting Suture 4. Holding Retractors 5. Manipulating endoscopic camera Observation Role: the student who is in the OR performing roles that do not meet the criteria for First or Second scrub role.
These observations must be documented, but are not included in the 120 required cases. Surgical Specialty Total # of Cases Required Minimum # of First Scrub Cases Required General Surgery Cardiothoracic ENT Ophthalmic GU Neuro Ob-Gyn Oral/Maxillofacial Orthopedics Peripheral-Vascular Plastics Procurement/Transplant Must use a minimum of 5 specialties Maximum of 15 cases in any one specialty. Maximum # of Second Scrub Cases that can be Applied Towards 120 Cases 30 Diagnostic Endoscopy Bronchoscopy Colonoscopy Cystoscopy EGD ERCP Esophagoscopy Laryngoscopy Panendoscopy Sinoscopy Ureteroscopy Labor & Delivery Totals diagnostic endoscopy cases may be applied toward the Second Scrub case count. 5 Vaginal Deliveries may be applied toward the Second Scrub case count.
