13 Getting there cuando no hay camino: Status of Latinas in the US Continue to face racial, ethnic, class, sexuality and gender discrimination both structural or systemic and microaggressions Still face under-education or subtractive education While more Latinas enter college, fewer graduate Still a fraction of one percent of women with advanced degrees, particularly in science

14 Mental Health Disparities in mental health access Almost twice the rate of depression as Latino men High prevalence of anxiety disorders High rates of IPV, sexual violence, rape, incest All of these result in physical, emotional and spiritual wounding Most of women s mental health problems have at their root relationship problems Lack of balance entre cargas y regalos Cultural position of women as caregivers, caretakers

23 Attachment Theory Structure and function of the brain are directly shaped by interpersonal experience. Human connections create neuronal connections (Siegal, 1999) It is these connections and the developing brain that allow for the regulation of affect, thus establishing the context for relationships

24 Attachment Theory Adverse social experience during early critical periods such as neglect, abuse, abandonment, violence and chaotic chemically dependent behavior seriously impair the functioning of the LIMBIC SYSTEM.
