2 Admission Information FRESHMAN APPLICANTS You are a freshman applicant if you are applying to Westfield State University directly from high school and have never attended college. See the Freshman Application checklist for a list of required documents. TRANSFER APPLICANTS You are a transfer applicant if you have attempted any college course work following high school graduation. See the Transfer Application checklist for a list of required documents. Students who are attempting their first term of college course work beyond high school graduation at the time of application are advised that an admission decision will not be made until a final official college grade report or transcript for the term in progress is received. Because this requirement is difficult to meet within the time allowed for admission processing, especially for January term applicants, we require students to complete at least 12 transferable credit hours before submitting an application to transfer. First semester college freshmen will not meet this requirement. Students eligible to transfer under terms of the MassTransfer Program during this application cycle may file the MassTransfer Enrollment Form in lieu of this application during the semester preceding their intended enrollment date at Westfield. MassTransfer students are required to submit official original transcript from all colleges previously attended. INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS AND PERMANENT RESIDENTS International applicants must meet the same admission requirements established for freshman or transfer applicants. Additional required documents include, where applicable: Official English

3 translations of all secondary and post-secondary school transcripts and examination results; official copy of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) for students whose native language is not English; Certification of Finances Form and a bank statement; English translations of course descriptions and school accreditation information; and a photocopy of the applicant s current Visa. Transfer applicants also must submit a copy of their current I-20. The deadline for filing the fall semester application is March 1. Permanent Resident applicants with academic credentials from institutions outside of the U.S. must have their documents evaluated in the same manner as international applicants (described below). Additionally, Permanent Residents must submit a copy of both sides of their Alien Registration Card. All international documents are evaluated by the Center for Educational Documentation in Boston, Mass. prior to making an admission decision. Students must submit all required documents and translations from institutions outside the United States in conjunction with a Credential Evaluation Request Form directly to: Center for Educational Documentation, P.O. Box , Boston, MA, 02117, by the March 1 deadline. The fee for evaluation services is assessed directly to each applicant by the Center. The Credential Evaluation Request Form is available online at ADMISSION STANDARDS Freshman and transfer applicants must meet minimum academic standards established by the Massachusetts Department of Higher Education (DHE) in order to be considered for admission to a state university. The Admission Standards document is available on the DHE website at The DHE allows individual state universities to set a higher minimum admission standard for freshman and transfer applicants, and Westfield State University has chosen to do so. O LEARNING DISABILITIES PROGRAM (Full program benefits) O URBAN EDUCATION PROGRAM O CONSIDERATION VIA THE REGULAR ADMISSION PROCESS WITH THE SAT AND FOREIGN LANGUAGE WAIVER (Diagnostic testing review required) Westfield State University makes every effort to provide an enriching educational experience for qualified students with learning disabilities in the Banacos Academic Center. Massachusetts law allows SAT scores to be waived for all students with documented learning disabilities. The Massachusetts Department of Higher Education also allows these students to substitute two college preparatory units in humanities or social sciences for the foreign language requirements. Westfield s Learning Disabilities Program is open to freshman students with documented learning disabilities or ADHD disclosed via the admission application process. Although students are not required to disclose a learning disability, freshman applicants who wish to receive special consideration in the admission process, as well as specialized learning assistance and other program benefits after enrollment, must submit a copy of complete diagnostic testing along with official high school transcripts to the Admission Office. Applicants who submit a reflective personal statement and two academic recommendations will receive preferential review. Applicants are also strongly encouraged to submit the most recent IEP or 504 plan. Diagnostic testing, which includes both a cognitive and an achievement test, should have been administered within the last three years. Preferred tests are the W.A.I.S. (cognitive tests) together with any achievement test used by the applicant s school system, OR the complete Woodcock Johnson Psycho-Educational Battery (comprised of both cognitive and achievement tests). All diagnostic testing materials received will be kept confidential and will be used only within guidelines of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 as amended (2008) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of First-year applicants with documented learning disabilities may be required to interview with the staff of the Learning Disabilities Program. Applicants admitted to the program should note that all support services are elective. The Urban Education Program provides first generation students from diverse educational, economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds a unique admission opportunity based on their potential to succeed at the university level. The program requires successful completion of the summer Bridge Program prior to matriculation. The program provides intensive support, advising and encouragement for students who have the inner motivation and desire to achieve personal, academic and professional success. Opportunities for leadership development and civic engagement are abundant. Career development and graduate school advising is also available.
