But are research and development actually at the same level in western and eastern Germany? How has the innovation system in eastern Germany developed since 1990, and what are its strengths and weaknesses? What role has public funding of research and innovation played in this development? Questions like these are at the centre of the 2016 Research in Germany press tour. To provide some answers, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) has invited a delegation of international journalists on a tour in March With cities like Jena, Dresden and Chemnitz having become attractive locations for scientific research, this one-week excursion will include visits to various types of facilities: universities, research institutes, companies and corresponding networks. The tour will thus offer a glimpse of the research landscape in eastern Germany and the chance to discuss related topics with experts from the realms of science, business and politics. This press tour is part of the initiative to Promote Innovation and Research in Germany, which was launched by the Federal Ministry of and Research (BMBF) to strengthen and expand research collaboration between Germany and its international partners. The Research in Germany brand aims to present information about German innovation and research worldwide and encourage an international research dialogue.
