2 INTRODUCTION WebDAV provides web-based access to Shares on your Lenovo network storage device. With WebDAV enabled on your Lenovo network storage device, you can view and edit files on your computer through your browser or downloaded WebDAV client, using either HTTP for unencrypted access or HTTPS for encrypted access. You can also access files through WebDAV by downloading a WebDAV client to your mobile device. With WebDAV, you have a convenient way to read and edit content in Shares on your storage device. AUDIENCE Information contained in this paper is intended for LenovoEMC customers, partners, and service personnel involved in using WebDAV with a Lenovo network storage device. TERMINOLOGY WebDAV: Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning. This protocol allows file transfer between a client and a web server. ENABLING WEBDAV ON YOUR LENOVO NETWORK STORAGE DEVICE Before you can view Shares on your Lenovo/EMC storage device using WebDAV, you must enable WebDAV access on your Lenovo/EMC storage device. 1. In the management console of your Lenovo storage device, access the Protocols feature page. 2. On the Protocols page, turn on the WebDAV File Sharing protocol by clicking the Off/On switch to On. 1

3 3. In the WebDAV Settings dialog box, select either Enable WebDAV over HTTP or Enable WebDAV over HTTPS. You can select HTTP for unencrypted access or HTTPS for encrypted access from your WebDAV client. HTTP offers faster performance but is not secured. 4. Click Apply to save your settings. ACCESSING SHARES FROM YOUR COMPUTER After you have enabled WebDAV on your Lenovo storage device, you can access Shares on your device by entering the Share name in a URL that points to your storage device. For example, if you want to access a Share called Documents, you type the following URL in your browser or a WebDAV client: or IP address/webdav/folder name (unsecured access) or (secured access) 2

4 ACCESSING CONTENT IF YOUR STORAGE DEVICE IS SECURED By default, if your Lenovo storage device is not secured, any user can access content in Shares through WebDAV on your device. To restrict access to content, you can enable security on your storage device and then create users. Each of those users can then be given permissions to Shares on the storage device. 1. To secure your storage device, access the Security feature in the device console of your storage device. 3

5 2. Click the switch on the Security page to On. 3. In the Enable Security dialog box, create an administrator user and password. You can leave most other settings at their default in this dialog box. 4. Click Apply to save your settings. Security is now enabled on your storage device, and your storage device has one user, the administrator. You can optionally go to the Users page to create additional users. 4

6 5. You are required to log back in to your device. Log in to your storage device using the administrator user name and password you just created. 6. Access the Shares feature page. 7. Expand a Share, expand the Access Permissions section of the Share, and then set the access permissions for the user or users you added on your storage device to read or read/write. 8. Click Apply to save your settings. 5

7 9. Open your browser and enter the WebDAV URL, for example, with folder name being the name of the Share for which you created access permissions. 10. Your browser will prompt you for valid user credentials for the Share. 11. Enter the credentials and click OK. Note: If you have enabled a personal cloud on your storage device but have not enabled security on your device, you must set a remote access password which gives you access to your device. No username is required. In this case, when you are prompted for valid user credentials for WebDAV, you enter the username webdav and the remote access password you created. After you enter valid user credentials, the content in the Share is displayed in your browser. The credentials are saved for your session in your browser. When you return to look at the content in the browser, you will not have to keep entering your credentials. 6

8 ACCESSING SHARES FROM A WEBDAV MOBILE CLIENT You can download a WebDAV client for your mobile device. After you have enabled WebDAV on your Lenovo storage device, you can access Shares on your device using a downloaded WebDAV client on your mobile device. Each WebDAV mobile client can vary, so you would need to consult the documentation with your WebDAV mobile client for further information on using it. 7

9 LIMITATIONS WITH WEBDAV The following are limitations with WebDAV on your storage device. If you have enabled a custom home page on your Lenovo storage device, you cannot access the Share that contains the custom home page content. If you have changed file level security on a Share, you cannot access a Share through WebDAV. You change file level security by checking the Allow users to change file level security checkbox in the Access Permissions section of a Share Lenovo. All rights reserved.
