1 The Sustainable Schools Project This project will determine if the process of greening existing school facilities results in lowering operating costs, and improving student achievement. Anticipated outcomes : Lower operating costs for districts Decreased dependence on taxes Increased funds to use toward district operations An optimized learning environment Optimal Learning Environments at Lower Operating Cost

Create a How to Become a Sustainable School Guidebook for School Board members that will: Identify the role of the board of education in implementing a sustainable strategic plan Identify the district policies needed to implement a sustainable strategic plan Identify and provide the professional development resources for school districts Include marketing strategies for gathering community support for implementing a sustainable strategic plan

Create a How to Become a Sustainable School Guidebook for School Board members that will: Identify partnerships and collaborative opportunities with private business for alternate funding sources Identify how districts can reinvest their financial savings from the greening process in support of school improvement Connect school districts to sustainable best practices and resources

Research the process of Greening an existing school building as it relates to: Analyzing existing research on green schools Reducing district operating cost Improving student achievement Improving teacher instructional strategies Preparing student for emerging green and STEM careers Identifying the roles, policies, partnerships and professional development needed by School Boards to implement a green model.

Implement the Green Schools Leadership Institute model with selected district teams Team attendance at a 4 day GSLI summer institute Produce a Green Strategic Plan, Mission Statement, Action Steps/Lesson Plans and Resources Implement strategic plan during the school year Team participation in a green online professional learning community Participation of a School Board member in the Institute, and their involvement in the three year process
6 4. Recruit participation among geographically representative districts that reflect diversity with regard to grade level and vocational orientation. Signed commitment to the three year project and its various components by the BOE and central administration Provide data before, during and at project completion Expanded team participation in the Green Schools Leadership Institute Sharing of all outcomes and best practices via an online collaborative learning environment
