1 Grades: 7 th Grade Standards: Language Arts - Reading Comprehension Writing , 2.3c Listening and Speaking Speaking Applications American School Counselor Association Standards: Develop Career Awareness A1.1, A1.7 Acquire Career Information B1.1, B1.6, Identify Career Goals B2.1, B2.4 Lesson length: Two class periods Who Conducts: Teacher 5 CAREER/COLLEGE COUNSELOR ROLE PLAY Overview Lesson Objectives In this lesson students will create a job plan for a fictitious student seeking assistance reaching a career goal. Students will use online resources and create a written plan and a poster for their assigned student illustrating the recommended path to each career goal. Day 1 Students will become familiar with the idea of a college and career plan; education, experience, and skills required in various careers. Students become aware of and comfortable using online and hard-copy career and college exploration resources, including California Career Zone ( Day 2 Students will complete a poster illustrating different career paths based on case examples. Students practice public presentation skills through a group presentation of career/college plan. Materials 6 student profiles (including career goal, personal stats)-copies for each student 6 Poster size papers Markers Printouts from the California Career Zone of each job profile for each mock student if access to computer lab is limited. JOB PLAN WORKSHEET Computer lab web access to California Career Zone

2 Procedure Suggested timeframe (5 min.) (20 min.) (20 min.) (25 min.) Day 1 1. Start class in the computer lab. 2. WARM UP: Ask students to think about the previous three lessons and write down a career area they would like to learn more about and why. 3. Provide lesson overview to students. Explain that they will work individually to act as a career/college counselor for a college student hoping to achieve a career goal. Inform them that they will develop a plan for this student that includes the type of education and experience they will need in order to reach their career goal. 4. Students will be expected to a) use the internet to research a career area, b) complete the JOB PLAN WORKSHEET, and c) create a poster for that fictitious student s career choice. 5. Model the lesson by sharing your own college/career plan following the poster outline. Write your plan on the board. 6. Share the profiles and photos of each mock student. Ask the students to choose a profile or make one up of their own. Make sure all students have selected a profile or have an idea of one of their own. 7. Provide students time to explore their mock students occupational area on and complete the JOB PLAN WORKSHEET. Job Definition & Interests (or Holland Code): Tasks Skills & Knowledge Education Required Wages 8. Collect the completed JOB PLAN WORKSHEETS and store in student portfolios. 9. Preview the next day for students; share that they will developing a poster for their mockstudent. Day 2 1. Allow students time to complete and record the data from the JOB PLAN WORKSHEET onto a poster size piece of paper. 2. Provide markers, magazines for collage and encourage the students to be creative in their posters. 3. Extra credit can be assigned if students provide more information than was required on the JOB PLAN WORKSHEET. 4. Ask randomly selected individuals to present posters to the class. Each presentation should last about 5 minutes with time for feedback and Q/A at end. 5. Debrief with students at end of lesson. Ask group if they learned about a new job that

3 (20 min.) might interest them in the future. Ask students if there were jobs that were shared that aren t interesting to them. Why? Display the posters or store them in student portfolios. Close Modifications and Extensions Rubric TICKET OUT THE DOOR: Ask students to talk with an adult (parent, teacher, guardian, mentor, etc.) about the education and experience they had to achieve to enter their job. Return with a completed JOB PLAN WORKSHEET for the person they interviewed. Give EXTRA CREDIT as appropriate. This exercise can be modified to be a team/group career/college plan and poster. Students also enjoy writing JOB PLANS for the occupation of their own selection. SCORE INTERNET RESEARCH JOB PLAN WORKSHEET JOB PLAN POSTER Student is off task and not using the internet appropriately. Student doesn t start the JOB PLAN WORKSHEET. Student doesn t start the JOB PLAN POSTER. Student is using the internet website the California Career Zone. Student starts but doesn t complete the JOB PLAN WORKSHEET. Student starts but doesn t complete the JOB PLAN POSTER. Student is using the California Career Zone and starting to document a career area on the JOB PLAN WORKSHEET. Student completes the JOB PLAN WORKSHEET. Student completes the JOB PLAN POSTER with pictures, complete data, and additional information in a creative way.

5 STUDENT PROFILES Registered Nurse: This is Tamara. She is 19 years old. She grew up in Brooklyn, New York and moved to San Francisco six months ago to be with her boyfriend. She speaks Spanish and English fluently. She wants to become a Registered Nurse because she has been working as a nurse s aide at her area hospital and likes helping people. Help her understand the steps to becoming a nurse. Biological Technician: This is Michael. He is 18 years old and is from South San Francisco. He has 4 brothers and sisters and graduated last year from high school. He took a year off to visit family in the Dominican Republic. He is back now and is interested in becoming a Biological Technician. He knows that there is lots of work in South San Francisco in the biotech field and loves chemistry, biology, and other science. Help him understand the steps to becoming a Biological Technician. Construction Managers: This is Arturo. He is 20 years old and lives with his older brother in San Francisco. His brother is a union carpenter and has suggested to Arturo that he might like to be a Construction Manager because Arturo supervises people and coordinate projects. Arturo currently works at Best Buy as a Floor Manager and has been awarded for his ability to supervise other staff. He also spent last summer working as a laborer for his brother s construction company and liked the work. Help him understand the steps to becoming a Construction Manager.

6 Loan Officer: This is Demetrius. She has worked for 2 years, since she was 17 for Wells Fargo bank as a teller. She really enjoys working with customers and is good with numbers. She always received good grades in math and her mother says she s good with people and small details. Demetrius is interested in becoming a Loan Officer and helping more people in her neighborhood acquire loans to buy their own homes. Give her some ideas on how to become a Loan Officer at a bank. Bus and Truck Mechanic: This is Craig. He has been in the Academy of Engineering high school since 10 th grade. He is graduating this spring. He had an internship last summer at MUNI and since then has been interested in a career as a Bus Mechanic. He s good with his hands and liked working with other people to solve technical problems. How would he go about getting the education and training necessary to become a Bus or Truck Mechanic. Computer Software Engineer: This is Terri. She is 18 years old. She loves computers and is very good at helping her high school computer technical staff at troubleshooting when something isn t working. She currently works at Wells Fargo as a support technician but would like to learn how engineers develop software. She s thinking she might like to design video games. Can you advise her on how to become a Computer Software Engineer?
