5 WELCOME ADDRESSES EUPSA President Dear Colleagues, On behalf of the EUPSA Executive Board it gives me a great pleasure to invite you to the 18 th European Congress of Pediatric Surgery in Limassol, Cyprus. With EUPSA s focus on clinical and experimental research, there are bound to be interesting speakers and presentations emphasizing the future of our field. Scientific sessions and poster presentations will be complemented by numerous special lectures an meet the expert sessions. The exhibit hall will showcase the latest techniques, advances, trends and equipment for pediatric surgery. The exponential output of knowledge and data in our field requires communication between colleges and researchers from all subspecialties of pediatric surgery. EUPSA will provide again an excellent communication platform during the scientific sessions and social activities of the congress. We are very grateful to our congress president Professor Zacharias Zachariou for arranging this event in Limassol, the largest city in Cyprus with a cultural heritage beginning years ago. Let us enjoy the promising program together with colleges and friends from Europe and all over the world. I am looking very much forward to seeing you in Limassol in 2017! Benno Ure Congress Chairman Dear EUPSA Members, Dear Friends, Welcome to Limassol, Cyprus for the 18 th Annual Congress of the European Pediatric Surgeon s Association. It is a great pleasure that I have the chance to invite you for the second time to the Annual Congress of the European Pediatric Surgeons Association organized by me. I hope you recall the 10 th EUPSA Congress in Berne in 2010 and revive good memories. For the first time in the history of EUPSA we are on an island in the Mediterranean. The island of Cyprus has been the crossroad between East and West, since over years. Our prehistoric ancestors have used it to cross from Africa to Europe, Alexander the Great to invade Asia, the Crusaders to regain power over Holy Jerusalem and still today the NATO for Military actions in the region. We are proud of hosting 2 very important meetings on a row: The 18 th EUPSA Annual Congress and the 24 th Colorectal Club International Meeting The EUPSA Annual Congress is the most important Pediatric Surgical event of the year, attracting hundreds of Surgeons from all over Europe but also from many places in the world. Both meetings offer a unique occasion to share knowledge, discuss personal experiences and plan projects through the well planned Scientific Sessions, Courses and Meet the Expert Sessions held by colleagues with high expertise. The correlate events will take place in the old city and in archaeological sites older than 2000 years, reviving Greek, Persian, Italian, French, Othman and British culture. Cyprus is an attraction visited by more than people per year looking for recreation as well as culture offered by the rich history of this island. I am sure your stay in Cyprus will be a memorable experience. We all are looking forward to welcoming you and your families to Limassol /Cyprus. Zacharias Zachariou International Society, History of Pediatric Surgery (ISHPS) Chairmen Dear Colleagues, Dear EUPSA Members, As you may know, the ISHPS was founded by Jan Molenaar more than 30 years ago. ISHPS is grateful to EUPSA for the opportunity to realize the next meeting in Limassol. According to the History Club tradition an invited speaker gives a lecture on History of Medicine and History of Pediatric Surgery of the hosting country. We are proud to announce this years lecture Medicine in Cyprus from Archaic Times to the Sixties by Prof. Zacharias Zachariou. Hoping to feel your continuous support S.N. The Congress was organized by Prof. Michael Hollwarth in Graz and due to the great success of the Congress it was decided to have a similar European meeting every second year. The following 3 Meetings were organized every 2 nd year (see Venues and Congress Chairpersons below). In 2002 Michael Hollwarth was elected as President of the European Pediatric Surgical Associations and he proposed on the occasion of the 5 th European Congress in Tours in 2003 the foundation of a new European Pediatric Surgeons Association. Therefore, the acronym EUPSA remained the same but this was now a formal Association with individual members. Due to the success of the previous congresses it was decided to have annual meetings after the already announced 6 th European Congress of Pediatric Surgery in Gdansk A new step towards a closer cooperation with the British Association of Pediatric Surgeons was achieved when both Associations decided to have a Joint Meeting on the occasion of the 10 th European Congress in Graz This combined meeting was very successful and fruitful for both Associations. The 13 th EUPSA Congress in Rome was again a common Congress with the BAPS. 6

10 CYPRUS, The Country on the Flag Although it is impossible to write the history of Cyprus, which begins over years ago, on half a page, we make this attempt and urge you to read more. By understanding the history it allows you to appreciate the way of life and the culture of Cyprus a whole lot more. The name Cyprus originates most probably from the Sumerian word kuber meaning copper as the island was the main copper provider in the ancient world. Cyprus has always been a country full of love and war. According to a myth, the goddess Aphrodite who represented beauty and love was born in Cyprus. Latest archaeological research showed that the earliest people to be in Cyprus lived mainly on the islands south coast. That was roughly in the year 10,000 BC, however not much is known how they died out. The most interesting thing about Cyprus's early history is that there seems to be a gap between the very first people and the new, who were more settled and lived in 8200 BC. Generally the history of Cyprus involves people capturing the island, purchasing the island and fighting over the island. Over the ages Cyprus was part of the Greek, Assyrian, Egyptian, Persian, Phoenician, Roman, Byzantine, Arab, French, Italian and Ottoman Empires. In the 19th century Cyprus became a British colony till 1960 when it gained its independent status, with 2 ethnic populations, a Turkish and a Greek Cypriot. Disputes on the constitution in , lead to the Turkish invasion in 1974 with 40% of the island being occupied by Turkish armed forces. In 2004 Cyprus became a full member of the European Union with all the rights and duties of a country within the united Europe. The large marina near the old town has opened its doors in 2014 extending into the sea as an artificial peninsula. The City of Carnival Limassol is the city where carnival is at home, a tradition left from the time when Cyprus was under Venetian rule. The City of Wine Limassol is the city with the major industry for wine production. You will have the opportunity to taste the Cyprus wine which has developed to a must among connoisseurs.
