Please contact our Admissions Office to find out additional information about each of these exams and what grades may be accepted for college credit. Foreign Language Placement Exam All Indiana University East students who have previously taken a foreign language in high school or have previous experience in a foreign language are eligible to take this placement test and oral exam. The results from the Foreign Language Placement Test indicate the IU East language course in which the student is qualified to enroll. Exams are given by appointment and administered by Foreign Language faculty members. Contact the School of Humanities and Social Sciences for more information. Advanced Placement The Advanced Placement (AP) program allows high school students to enroll in college level courses and test their proficiency by taking an exam. Students should request that their scores be sent to Indiana University East. The Office of Admissions will evaluate the results for transfer credit and mail a Credit Transfer Report to the student. Students interested should contact their high school guidance counselor or the College Board ( for information. CLEP The College Level Examination Program (CLEP) enables students to earn transfer credit for what they have learned on the job, through self-study or personal interest. 4 Application for Admission How to Apply Applicants must submit this application and the appropriate supporting documents to the IU East Office of Admissions. We also encourage you to apply online at Individuals who have previously attended Indiana University as degree-seeking students do not need to submit an application for admission. Previous IU students should contact the Office of Student Records at Application materials should be sent to: Office of Admissions Indiana University East Whitewater Hall, Room Chester Boulevard Richmond, IN Students without U.S. citizenship, including those in the U.S. on immigration visas, must complete the online application at Social Security Number Policy In accordance with the Privacy Act of 1974 and Indiana P122 of 1977, students or applicants are advised that the requested disclosure of their Social Security Number is voluntary. The student has the right to refuse disclosure of this number or request its removal from records. A special ten-digit student ID number will then be assigned for use with the university. The Social Security Number will be used to identify the students permanent records such as transcript, registration, grade reports, transcript requests, as an identifier for financial aid programs, and to determine eligibility, certify school attendance, and report student status. The student s Social Security Number is not disclosed to individuals or agencies outside IU except in accordance with the IU Policy on Release of Student Information. Please note that if you receive any form of federal aid or several forms of state aid, you will be required to provide your Social Security Number so that your aid may be processed. Criminal Activity Disclosure Policy IU East is committed to maintaining a safe environment for all members of the university community. As part of this commitment, the university requires applicants who have been convicted of any felony or a misdemeanor such as simple battery or other convictions for behavior that resulted in injury to a person(s) or personal property to disclose this information as a mandatory step in the application process. A previous conviction or previous conduct does not automatically bar admission to the university but does require review. Complete information must be sent by certified mail with the application for admission to the IU East Office of Admissions at 2325 Chester Boulevard, Richmond, IN Applicants are responsible for maintaining the receipt certifying that the letter has been received by IU East. Information to be submitted includes: a brief explanation, location (city, state, country) of conviction of previous conduct, dates, and court disposition. This statement must also include a grant of permission to IU East for complete access to criminal records, if any. For further information on this requirement, call Students with Disabilities For students with disabilities who may need assistance, special arrangements can be made to accommodate most needs. TTY Special Admission Non-degree-seeking applicants to IU East may also be admitted to one of several special categories: Undergraduate Non-Degree: Applicants who are over 21 years of age and have earned a high school diploma or GED may apply for admission as a non-degree student and can remain in this classification for a maximum of 12 credit hours. Applicants must submit the regular application for admission and the nonrefundable $35 application fee. Graduate Non-Degree: Applicants who have previously completed a bachelor s degree may apply for admission as a graduate non-degree student by submitting this application for admission and the nonrefundable $40 application fee. Graduate non-degree students are not admitted to an advanced degree program. Please declare your major as Grad-Non-Degree on question 15. Visiting: Individuals who have previously attended or have been admitted to another college or university and who plan to enroll for a limited period of time before returning to their home institution may apply for admission as visiting students. Please submit this application and the nonrefundable $35 application fee. Please declare your major as Visiting on question 15. High School: Applicants who are currently in high school and who have successfully completed their junior year may apply for admission by submitting the regular application for admission, an official high school transcript, and written permission from their high school principal or guidance counselor. Applicants who have not completed their junior year should contact the IU East Office of Admissions. Once students have earned admission and taken necessary placement tests, they may make an appointment with an academic advisor to register for classes. Please declare your major as High School Student on question 15. 4

5 APPLICATION FOR ADMISSION Steps to Apply Step 1: Application Submit your completed and signed application to the IU East Office of Admissions. You can also apply online at Step 2: Application Fee Submit the nonrefundable $35 application fee with your application. Step 3: Official Documents Official copies of your high school transcript, home school transcript, GED results or college transcripts must be requested and mailed directly to the IU East Office of Admissions. High school transcript request forms are available from the Office of Admissions as well as in this guide. Transfer students who have completed fewer than 12 hours of transferable college credits should submit an official copy of their high school transcript or GED scores. Step 4: SAT or ACT Scores (high school students only) Seniors in high school must submit either SAT or ACT test scores including the Writing Section of the test, to be considered for admission. If your class has graduated and a fall semester has passed since your graduation you do not need to take the SAT or ACT. (However, if you did take the test, we would like to see the results.) Step 5: Acceptance Applications are reviewed daily, and once an application is complete with all required materials, you will receive a written decision. Students who are transferring to IU East will receive their Credit Transfer Report after their transcript is evaluated. Transfer students or beginners that have completed college level courses while in high school or have military training, DANTES test results, CLEP test results, International Baccalaureate scores, or College Board Advanced Placement (AP) scores, please provide official credentials. The office will then inform you how to check your posted credits online.

11 Financial Aid and Scholarships The Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships administers several financial aid programs. Programs at the federal, state, and university levels are available to students who demonstrate need for financial assistance. All aid is subject to the availability of funds. If you are interested in receiving financial aid, please complete these steps. Step 1: File the FAFSA Submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as possible after January 1. It must be received by March 10 of the year you will start at IU East. For Indiana residents filing the FAFSA by the March 10 deadline will allow you to be considered for state aid. The FAFSA is available on the web at IU East s FAFSA code is ; be sure to list this code when you complete the FAFSA. Step 2: Admission-based Scholarships Apply for admission by March 1 to be considered for admission-based scholaships. Recipients of admission-based scholarships will be notified upon admission to IU East. Step 3: Apply for Merit Scholarships Merit scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis and require a separate application. Your admission application will be evaluated to determine your qualifications for four-year merit scholarships. If you meet the criteria for these scholarships, a scholarship application will be mailed to you. Submit scholarship application forms by the deadline (see page 6).

12 STEPS TO ENROLL Step 1: Earn Admission Step 2: Placement Testing Freshmen are required to take placement tests to ensure correct placement in first-semester courses. Math and English tests can be taken by appointment in Springwood Hall, Room 202. For more information, call Step 3: New Student Orientation Attending a New Student Orientation session is required for all first-time Freshmen. During New Student Orientation students will become acquainted with campus and meet other new students as well as meet an academic advisor and register for classes. Transfer students may schedule an appointment with a faculty advisor and register for classes during Open Registration by calling Although New Student Orientation is not required for transfer students, it is highly recommended. Step 4: Financial Arrangements Arrangements for bill payment should be made with the Office of Student Accounts (Bursar). For more information, please visit

13 Residency Status You must be an Indiana resident for 12 months in order to qualify as a resident student for fee purposes. The initial determination of resident or nonresident status at Indiana University East is made by the Office of Admissions. Ohio Tuition Reciprocity Indiana University East offers Ohio students in neighboring counties in-state tuition rates. IU East students who have been residents of Butler, Darke, Mercer, Preble, Shelby and Van Wert counties in Ohio for 12 months prior to their enrollment are eligible for the tuition reciprocity. Credit for Military Experiences If you are a veteran of the Armed Forces, you may be eligible for academic credit as a result of your military training and experience. The Admissions Office follows the guidelines of the American Council of Education s Guide for the Evaluation of Educational Experience in the Armed Services in awarding academic credit. You should submit any of the following documents for transfer credit evaluation: Original or Certified Copy of your DD214 or NGB22 and/or an official AARTS/SMART transcript of your military occupational/job skills. Dual Enrollment Dual Enrollment is an opportunity for high school students who have completed their junior year to earn credit for both high school and college while enrolling in and attending an IU East course. Students must have their high school guidance counselor s permission to enroll in university classes. An application, authorization to release transcripts, and placement test are required. Honors Program The Honors Program at Indiana University East is designed for students who excel academically and aspire even higher levels of excellence. Developed for busy students with busy lives, the uniqueness of the Honors Program is that students are only required to take one additional course. Other course work is embedded into courses already in your academic plan. Service-learning, campus contributions, and cultural activities are integral to the program. These activities foster good citizenship on campus and in the community. Admitted IU East students with a cumulative high school GPA of 3.7 or higher qualify for automatic acceptance into the Honors Program. Enrolling in the Honors first-year seminar will activate your Honors membership. More information about the Honors Program can be obtained online at honors. International Students Students without U.S. citizenship, including those on immigration visas, must submit official transcripts from all previously attended institutions and complete the online application at iue.edu/admissions. Transfer Student Admission Requirements Students enrolling at Indiana University East who have attended college and earned fewer than 12 transferable semester credit hours will also need to submit an official copy of their high school transcript or GED scores. Upon acceptance to IU East, we will evaluate your transcript(s) and complete an official transfer credit report. Four items will be considered when evaluating credit for transfer: The educational quality of the former institutions and their accreditation, The comparability of the nature, content and level of credit earned, The appropriateness and applicability of the credit earned to programs offered at IU East, The grade equivalent of each transferred course (must be at least a C). 14 Four-Year Admission-Based And Merit Scholarships Four-year admission-based and merit scholarships are awarded for academic performance and in recognition of academic achievement. By rewarding excellence through scholarships, we hope to encourage students to continue their education at IU East. Applicants for admission to IU East become eligible for admission-based scholarships when they submit an admission application by March 1 that meets academic criteria for the particular scholarship. Merit scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis and require a separate application. Since beginning freshman students are considered for admission-based scholarships immediately upon admission to IU East, they are urged to apply for admission as early as possible, preferably in the fall of their senior year in high school. Students meeting criteria for admission-based scholarships will be contacted once the admission process is complete and sent a notification of the scholarships for which they are eligible. They will also receive an application for merit and any other competitive scholarships available. Students can receive only one four-year admission-based or merit scholarship, the highest one for which they are eligible or selected. Please note that tuition and fees for resident students at IU East for 15 credits of coursework per semester for the academic year are approximately $6,786.78, depending on the courses taken. IU East Distinguished Scholars (Merit) $24,000 ($6,000 annually for 4 years) Deadline: December 1, admission and scholarship application Students ranking in the top 10 percent of their high school class with exceptional SAT (Math and Critical Reading) or ACT scores are eligible to apply for this competitive scholarship. Emphasis will be placed on academic excellence, but extracurricular activities and community service will also be considered. Distinguished Scholars will demonstrate a commitment to help promote IU East to future students through participation in new student recruitment and other campus activities. These scholars are also expected to apply and remain eligible for the Honors Program. (This award amount includes any other admissionbased award offers.) To be considered for renewal, students must attend full time and maintain at least a 3.0 GPA. Selection will be based on an assessment of potential contribution to the campus. Special consideration will be given to incoming freshmen who will be the first in their family of origin (mother and father) to graduate from an accredited college (bachelor s degree). Students who receive another admission-based scholarship will be ineligible to receive this scholarship. Students must enroll full time and maintain at least a 2.5 GPA. Lingle Scholars $8,000 ($2,000 annually for 4 years) Wayne County students who apply for and are accepted to the IU East Honors Program are eligible. 16 Outreach Scholarships Outreach scholarships are competitive and based on academic, service and leadership achievements and require a separate application. Students meeting criteria for these and other four-year (or two-year) scholarships will be contacted once the admission process is complete and sent a notification of the scholarships for which they are eligible. Students can receive only one four-year (or two-year) scholarship, the highest one for which they are eligible or selected.
