TRADITIONAL IRA A traditional IRA is a tax-deferred retirement account available to all individuals under the age of 70½ and their spouses. ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS Individuals with earned income. Individuals age 50 or over (at any time during the year) may make an additional annual contribution to their traditional IRA, called a catch-up contribution. Year Under Age 50 Individual Contribution Limit 1 Age 50 or older Catch-Up Contribution $5,500 $1, $5,500 $1,000 You must be under the age of 70½, and either you or your spouse must have compensation from employment in order to establish and contribute to a traditional IRA. You may roll over assets from a 401(k) pension, profit-sharing, 403(b), or 457(b) governmental plan into a traditional IRA, or transfer an IRA from another institution, regardless of your age or employment status. DEDUCTION RULES A single person not covered by an employersponsored retirement plan may deduct his or her entire contribution to a traditional IRA. For 2015 contributions, couples filing jointly, where only one spouse is covered by an employersponsored retirement plan, the spouse not covered may deduct the full contribution to a traditional IRA if the couple s joint income is less than $181,000. A partial deduction is available if the couple s income is $181,000 or more, but does not exceed $191,000. If you are covered by an employer-sponsored retirement plan, part or all of your traditional IRA contribution may be deductible if your adjusted gross income (AGI) is below certain levels. 2 Note: Lord Abbett cannot make a determination regarding your deductibility. You should consult your tax advisor. INCOME LIMITS FOR MAKING DEDUCTIBLE IRA CONTRIBUTIONS The tables below show the income ranges for deductibility of IRA contributions made by individuals who are active participants in employer-sponsored retirement plans. Individuals or couples with incomes below the minimum qualify for a full deduction, and those with incomes within these ranges qualify for a partial deduction. MINIMUM AND MAXIMUM INCOME LIMITS FOR SINGLE INDIVIDUAL RETURNS Year Minimum Income 1, 2 Maximum Income 1, $60,000 $70, $61,000 $71,000 TABLE OF MINIMUM AND MAXIMUM INCOME LIMITS FOR MARRIED INDIVIDUALS FILING JOINT RETURNS 3 Year Minimum Income 1, 2 Maximum Income 1, $96,000 $116, $98,000 $118,000 3
TRADITIONAL IRA (continued) ROLLOVERS AND TRANSFERS Assets may be sent directly to Lord Abbett from a qualified plan, 403(b) plan, 457(b) governmental plan, or another IRA. Direct Rollover When you retire or leave your place of employment, your former employer is required to give you the option of having your eligible rollover distribution transferred directly to your IRA or another qualified plan. 4 If you wish to avoid the 20% federal withholding on distributions from your employer-sponsored, taxqualified plan, please follow these procedures: Complete a Lord Abbett IRA Application. Instruct your employer to make the check payable to Lord Abbett Funds, IRA for [Your Name]. Make sure your Social Security number, your newly assigned account number, and the words Direct Rollover appear on the check. The check can be sent to you or forwarded directly to Lord Abbett. If you are the nonspouse beneficiary of a qualified plan participant, you may transfer that account into a Decedent IRA. The account would be titled John Doe, deceased, FBO (for the benefit of) [John s beneficiary]. The asset transfer must come directly to Lord Abbett from the prior account. Transfer IRA This occurs when you move your IRA from one custodian to another. You also may have the funds sent to Lord Abbett directly from you prior IRA custodian. New IRS guidance, effective in 2015, allows for a 60-day IRA rollover every 365 days. Consult with your tax professional for information. COMBINING CONTRIBUTORY TRADITIONAL IRAS, ROLLOVER IRAS, AND SEP-IRAS You may desire to combine your traditional IRA, rollover IRA, and SEP-IRA accounts. This will allow you to receive your IRA summary on a single statement. Lord Abbett will not automatically combine all IRA accounts. You must instruct us to do so. 5 WITHDRAWALS FROM YOUR IRA Mandatory Withdrawals You must begin taking annual minimum distributions from your traditional IRA by April 1 following the year you turn 70½. Mandatory distributions that represent deductible contributions and all earnings are taxed as ordinary income. Mandatory distributions based on nondeductible contributions are tax-free. Other Withdrawals As a general rule, withdrawals on or after age 59½ that represent deductible contributions and all earnings are taxed as ordinary income. Withdrawals made on or after age 59½ based on nondeductible contributions are tax-free. Withdrawals made before age 59½ are subject to a 10% penalty tax (in addition to ordinary income tax), unless they are: Substantially equal periodic payments (under the Internal Revenue Code Section 72(t) exception) A result of your disability or death Used to pay for medical insurance premiums if you have received unemployment compensation for more than 12 weeks Used for certain medical expenses totaling more than 10% of your adjusted gross income (individuals 65 and older can use the 7.5% threshold through 2016) Used to pay qualified higher education expenses Used for the purchase of a first home (there is a lifetime limit of $10,000 for distributions for firsttime homebuyers) Made as a result of an IRS levy to pay overdue taxes 4
ROTH IRA A Roth IRA is a tax-deferred and potentially tax-free retirement account available to all working individuals and their spouses who meet the income requirements. ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS Individuals with earned income. Annual contributions may be made by individuals with adjusted gross income (AGI) 6 of up to $116,000 and by couples filing jointly with AGI of up to $193,000. The contribution amount gradually reduces to zero for single taxpayers with AGI between $116,000 and $131,000 1 and for couples with AGI 1, 7, 8 between $183,000 and $193,000. The contributions you make to a qualified pension, profit-sharing, 403(b), or 457(b) governmental plan will reduce your AGI and potentially make you and/or your spouse eligible for a Roth IRA. Contributions may be made at any age, as long as you or your spouse have compensation from employment and satisfy an income test. Tax Filing Status 2014 Income (MAGI) Single $114, ,000 Married filing jointly $181, , Income (MAGI) $116, ,000 $183, ,000 Married filing separately $0 10,000 $0 10,000 CONTRIBUTION LIMITS In 2015, an individual can contribute up to $5,500 to a Roth IRA. Eligible individuals age 50 or over (at any time during the year) may contribute an additional annual contribution of $1,000 to their Roth IRA. This is called a catch-up contribution. Year Under Age 50 Individual Contribution Limit 1 Age 50 or older Catch-Up Contribution $5,500 $1, $5,500 $1,000 DEDUCTION RULES All contributions to the Roth IRA are made on an aftertax basis and therefore provide no current tax deduction. CONVERSION FROM A TRADITIONAL IRA TO A ROTH IRA Individuals may convert their traditional IRA (including a SEP-IRA) to a Roth IRA. All individuals, regardless of income, are eligible to convert assets from their traditional IRA to a Roth conversion IRA. Income taxes will be due on the taxable amount that you convert to the Roth IRA. An early withdrawal penalty will not be assessed if the conversion occurs before age 59½, provided that the converted amount remains in the Roth IRA for a period of five years. Roth IRA conversions are reversible through a technique called recharacterization, which allows you to unwind or reverse a Roth IRA conversion as late as your tax filing plus extension following the year the conversion was completed. COMBINING ROTH CONVERSION AND ROTH IRAS You may desire to combine your Roth conversion IRA account and your Roth contributory IRA account. This allows you to receive your Roth IRA summary on a single statement. Lord Abbett will not automatically combine all your IRA accounts. You must instruct us to do so. See back page to order appropriate form(s). ROLLOVER AND TRANSFER Assets may be sent directly to Lord Abbett from a designated Roth 401(k), Roth 403(b), Roth 457(b), or another Roth IRA regardless of your income. Moving pretax assets from a former employer s workplace retirement plan to a Roth IRA is subject to taxation. 5
ROTH IRA (continued) Direct Rollover When you retire or leave your job, your employer is required to give you the option of having your eligible Roth 401(k) or Roth 403(b) rollover distribution transferred directly to your Roth IRA or another qualified plan that offers the Roth option. Please follow these procedures: Complete a Lord Abbett IRA application form and obtain an account number from Lord Abbett. See back page to order the appropriate form(s). Instruct your employer to make the check payable to Lord Abbett Funds, IRA for [Your Name]. Make sure your Social Security number, your newly assigned account number, and the words Direct Rollover appear on the check. The employer should deliver the check to you or forward the check directly to Lord Abbett. Roth IRA Transfers This occurs when you move your Roth IRA from one custodian to another. You may also have the funds sent to Lord Abbett directly from your prior custodian. If you take receipt of the assets, you generally have 60 days to roll the money into a new IRA or be subject to taxation. If you are the nonspouse beneficiary of a qualified plan participant who had a Roth account, you may transfer that account into a Decedent IRA. The account would be titled John Doe, deceased, FBO (for the benefit of) [John s beneficiary], and this transfer must come directly from the qualified plan to this account. Your handling these funds, even for a day, would make them ineligible for this transfer and potentially partially taxable to you. If the qualified plan established distribution protocols before your requesting this transfer, those protocols must be followed. WITHDRAWALS FROM YOUR ROTH IRA There are no mandatory withdrawals from a Roth IRA. Distributions based on assets converted from traditional IRAs may be tax-free, subject to tax, and/ or subject to the 10% penalty tax. Please see our Disclosure Statement provided in the Lord Abbett Traditional IRA and Roth IRA application booklet or IRS Publication 590, either of which provides more specific guidance regarding taxation. Distributions, including accumulated earnings, may be made tax-free if the account has been held at least five years and the individual is at least age 59½, is disabled, has died, or uses the funds for the purchase of a first home. (There is a $10,000 lifetime limit per individual for withdrawals used for firsttime home purchases.) Penalties will be waived for withdrawals made before age 59½ that are made for the following reasons: Disability or death Electing substantially equal periodic payments (under the Internal Revenue Code Section 72(t) exception) To pay for medical insurance premiums if you have received unemployment compensation for more than 12 weeks To pay for certain medical expenses totaling more than 10% of your adjusted gross income (individuals 65 and older can use the 7.5% threshold through 2016) To pay for qualified higher education expenses; To pay for the purchase of a first home (there is a lifetime limit of $10,000) To pay overdue taxes as a result of an IRS levy CONTRIBUTION LIMITS FOR TRADITIONAL AND ROTH IRAS You may contribute up to 100% of your compensation if it does not exceed the maximum annual amount permitted. Couples filing jointly may each contribute the maximum annual amount permitted to their IRAs. Total contributions may not exceed the couple s joint annual income. Please review the IRA eligibility requirements carefully. Eligible individuals age 50 or over (at any time during the year) may make an additional annual contribution to their traditional IRA or Roth IRA. This is called a catch-up contribution. DEADLINES FOR TRADITIONAL AND ROTH IRAS An IRA must be established by the tax filing deadline for the year in which you wish to make the contribution. Usually that date is April 15 of the following year. Contributions to an existing IRA must also be made by the tax filing deadline in order to count for that tax year. There are no extensions. 6
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION SAVER S TAX CREDIT You may be eligible to receive a tax credit for funding your traditional or Roth IRA. The Saver s Credit is a nonrefundable federal income tax credit available to taxpayers with adjusted gross income (AGI) of less than $61,000. The maximum annual contribution eligible for the credit is $2,000, and the maximum credit is 50%, making the maximum credit $1,000. Tax Credit % 1 50% 20% 10% Ineligible for Credit Married AGI Not to exceed $36,500 $36,501 39,500 $39,501 61,000 Greater than $61,000 Head of Household AGI Not to exceed $27,375 $27,376 29,625 $29,626 45,750 Greater than $47,750 Single AGI Not to exceed $18,250 $18,251 19,750 $19,751 30,500 Greater than $30,500 SEP-IRAS AND SAR-SEP IRAS SEP-IRA and SAR-SEP IRA plans are employersponsored IRAs that provide contributions to participants. A SAR-SEP plan allows participants to save through pretax payroll investments. A SEP-IRA allows your employer to make an annual contribution to your account. Individuals covered by a SEP-IRA may receive a contribution of up to 25% of compensation, not to exceed $53,000. Lord Abbett also accepts SAR-SEP IRA transfers. Note: As of December 31, 1996, no new SAR-SEP IRA plans can be established. However, if your employer sponsors a SAR-SEP IRA, you may be eligible to participate. NO CUSTODIAL FEE The annual custodial fee for the various IRAs is now waived.* * Lord Abbett will waive (or otherwise pay) the yearly $10.00 custodial fee that would be charged each year on an ongoing basis to every new IRA account, and, therefore, will not assess a custodial account fee in 2015 or any year afterward. Fund-level fees and expenses are still applicable. Please see a fund s current prospectus. LORD ABBETT IRA SERVICES Lord Abbett provides a variety of IRA services that make managing your account easy and convenient. 8 INVESTMENT-LED. INVESTOR-FOCUSED. IMPORTANT INFORMATION Before opening a Lord Abbett IRA, please be sure to read the Lord Abbett IRA Custodial Agreement. Keep this document for your records. X 1 This amount may be adjusted to reflect annual cost-of-living increases by the IRS. 2 AGI is your gross income minus those deductions that are available to all taxpayers, even if they do not itemize. Instructions to calculate your AGI are provided with your income tax form 1040 or 1040A. 3 For married individuals filing separate returns, the income range for a partial deduction generally extends from $0 to $10, If you are over the age of 70½, your required minimum distribution (RMD) may not be transferred into your IRA (Roth or traditional) or another qualified plan. 5 Combining a rollover and a contributory IRA may result in the loss of income averaging and capital gains treatment with respect to the rollover assets, if applicable. It also may affect the calculation you may need to perform to exempt your rollover IRA from any claims in the event of bankruptcy. You should consult your tax advisor before combining accounts. 6 For purposes of the Roth IRA contribution limits, AGI is not reduced by the amount of any deduction taken for a contribution to a traditional IRA for the year, nor does AGI include income from the conversion of a traditional IRA to a Roth IRA. 7 For married individuals filing separate returns, the income range for reduced contributions generally extends from $0 to $10, Active participation in an employer-sponsored retirement plan does not reduce the amount you can contribute to a Roth IRA.
