Private Student Loans for Career and Technical Education Students pursuing career and technical education instead of degree programs have loan options through private lenders. Private lender loans are more difficult to secure than their Federal counterparts and generally come with higher interest rates and more stringent repayment terms. That being said, without private lender loans many students would be unable to afford to enter new careers or progress in their current profession. Banks and private lending institutions are beginning to design loan packages specifically geared towards students pursuing career and technical training at two-year community colleges. Students looking for loans for career and technical education may have to consult with a number of private lenders to find a suitable loan program. The following private lenders offer loan programs designed to benefit students enrolled in career and technical training programs at community colleges. Wells Fargo Wells Fargo offers the Student Loan for Career and Community Colleges. This loan is specifically designed to meet the needs of students pursuing career-specific training at a two-year community college or technical school. The loan offers low interest rates and flexible repayment plans. Eligibility is determined by income and credit history. Sallie Mae As one of the leading providers of student loans, Sallie Mae has a long history of tailoring loans to meet the needs of all types of college students. The Smart Option Loan is one of their newest loan programs, and is designed to fit the needs of students enrolled in community college workforce development programs, technical school or vocational college. The program offers low interest rates, flexible repayment options and rewards for on time payments. Students may borrow up to 100% of their total tuition costs. Additional private lending options can be as close as your local bank. Be sure to check with your banking institution and research Private Student Loans that can fund career and technical education. Career and Technical education programs lead to a certificate or license and are offered through Community Colleges and Technical or Vocational School programs.
Understanding Your Responsibilities as a Student Borrower It is important to fully understand your responsibilities as a student borrower. Private loans help thousands of students every year pursue their continued education, but they are not to be entered into lightly. Before signing any loan agreement, be certain that you understand all of the terms and conditions attached to the contract. Read the agreement fully, and ask for clarification of any aspect of the loan that you do not understand. When negotiating any private loans, keep the following tips in mind: Never borrow more than you absolutely need to cover the cost of the course, books, and certification or licensure exam Never sign a loan agreement without a definite plan for loan repayment Review your loan agreement point by point with your lender Never sign a loan agreement until you are certain you understand all of your responsibilities as a borrower The demands of a fast changing job market have caused an upswing in the number of students pursuing study and certificates in career and technical training programs. For many students, a four-year liberal arts education is not their goal, and career/technical education offers a way to fast-track into a reliable career. Other students are in a career and in order to progress or grow they need additional training or certifications. For those students, private career and technical education loans offer the financial assistance they need to pursue both their educational and professional goals.
Frequently Asked Questions Are there grants available for Career and Technical education (non-credit) programs? Some grants are available based on employment status. Students who have lost employment through organization downsizing or job displacement (jobs gone overseas or other areas) may qualify for education funds provided through the Virginia Employment Commission, Opportunity Inc., or the VCCS OnRamp. For information about these options contact: Virginia Employment Commission: Opportunity Inc.: VCCS OnRamp: Tuenika Wynn or twynn@tcc.edu Veterans and Active Duty students wishing to take Career and Technical education (noncredit) courses may qualify for funds administered through the Veteran s Administration. Contact TCC s Center for Military and Veteran Education (CMVE) for more information about these funding options: Military@TCC.edu. When do I need to obtain the student loan for my Career and Technical education (noncredit) course(s)? If you intend to use a student loan to pay for your Career and Tech education course(s): 1. Contact TCC Workforce Solutions or visit our website to obtain information for the total cost of the course. This will include course fees, required supplies, books, and exam vouchers. 2. Contact a lender and apply for the loan amount you need to cover your career and technical education course(s). 3. Capture a screen shot, or create a scanned copy showing approval of your loan just the page showing approval and your name this serves as loan verification. 4. Enroll in the course(s) you wish to attend and provide student loan approval verification. TCC Central Financial Aid will contact your lender to certify your loan. 5. If the course begins prior to check dispersal you will be required to obtain needed books and supplies and can get reimbursement for those purchases once your loan check arrives and you have processed your tuition payment.
How much can I borrow? Typically lenders require a minimum loan amount of $1,000. This means the total for your class(s), book(s), and exam(s) must come to at least $1,000. Loan maximums vary from lender to lender but can be as much as $99,000. Your lender can provide the best information regarding borrowing minimum, maximum, and re-payment terms. Do I need to tell the lender this is a TCC Workforce loan? In the application process select Tidewater Comm Clg-Workforce Dev which ensures that your loan request is not placed in the queue with academic loans for TCC students. This will make the loan certification and check disbursement go much quicker (typically within 2 weeks of loan approval). How much interest and fees do I pay for the loan? Contact lenders to obtain this information it varies. How long do I have to repay the loan? When do I start making payments? Contact lenders to obtain this information it varies. If I get approved for a loan, how long does it take to receive the loan funds? The typical turnaround time from loan approval to check disbursement is 2 calendar weeks. When the loan check is disbursed, what happens? 1. You are notified via (VCCS address) that the check has arrived and is ready for endorsement/pickup at the Norfolk Campus Business Office. 2. You must endorse the check at the Norfolk Campus Business Office. The lender will make the check co-payable so that it will require endorsements from both you and TCC. 3. The check will be deposited and the tuition and fees will be paid. Any remaining funds will be issued to you in a refund according to the college refund schedule. 4. If you paid tuition and fees personally, the check (endorsed by the Norfolk Campus Business Office) will be released to you.
What will the loan cover? Career and Technical education loans for continuing education and professional development cover the cost of tuition, books, supplies, and exams. They typically do not fund living expenses. Talk to lenders to learn more about their funding allowances for career and technical education. What if I decide to not take the Workforce course(s)? If you do not endorse the check by the end of the semester, the Norfolk Campus Business Office will return the check to Central Financial Aid to be returned to the lender. This will cancel the loan. If you endorse the check, and decide to drop the course(s), you are still required to pay the loan to your lender based on their requirements. Your lender may have other restrictions and requirements when courses are dropped. Please be sure to work with them to have a thorough understanding of your obligations.
