6 How do we use it? Total energy usage is 5x electricity use Electricity generated mostly by coal, gas, biomass, Roughly 1 / 3 rd of energy is used for transport Mostly based on refining of oil Large scale uptake of EV (electric vehicles) will result in significant increase in electricity usage 6
7 Renewable electricity: solar panels Yield: 130 kwh /yr /m² Typical Dutch household: 3300 kwh/yr 25 m² / HH (15 panels), 6000 Total 200 km² for HH (=6% of built area) 900 km² for all Dutch electricity (200 bln ) 160,000 km² for global electricity consumption (4x area of the Netherlands)... or 80 full sea containers of coal per minute

9 Where are we going? The future of energy is impossible to predict, however some ingredients are clear: Electric vehicles will become more important (but never 100%) Installation of solar panels will continue to grow Energy efficiency (in all aspects) will improve Energy neutral buildings / neighbourhoods will arise We will need more energy storage (electricity & heat) Electricity surplus can be used to create synthetic fuels 9
