1 COM140: INTERNET RESEARCH AND COMMUNICATIONS SYLLABUS LECTURE HOURS/CREDITS: 3/3 CATALOG DESCRIPTION Prerequisite: ENG101 English Composition I This course provides an introduction to Internet services and resources for communication, collaboration and research. COM140 is currently listed as a communications elective for students pursuing a Communications Options degree, one of GCC s top-ten programs by enrollment. Technological Competency Students will use computer systems or other appropriate forms of technology to achieve educational and personal goals. Society and Human Behavior Students will use social science theories and concepts to analyze human behavior and social and political institutions and to act as responsible citizens. Humanistic Perspective Students will analyze works in the fields of art, history, music, or theater; literature; philosophy and/or religious studies; and/or will gain competence in the use of a foreign language Historical Perspective Students will understand historical events and movements in World, Western, non-western or American societies and assess their subsequent significance. Global and Cultural Awareness Students will understand the importance of a global perspective and culturally diverse peoples. Ethical Reasoning and Action Students will understand ethical issues and situations. Information Literacy Students will address an information need by locating, evaluating, and effectively using information COM140 CORE COMPETENCIES This course focuses on three of RCGC s Core Competencies: Written and Oral Communication Technological Competency Information Literacy

Recognize and apply the principles of effective communication when writing and speaking: a. Create an easy to follow organization b. Use precise word choice and correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling 2. Design and execute effective searches for information using a variety of search tools and analyze information for: a. Usefulness b. Accuracy c. Authority d. Bias e. Currency f. Coverage 3. Communicate in ethical ways: a. Use accurate MLA internal citations and Works Cited b. Construct reasoned and fair arguments without deception or inflammatory language c. Employ netiquette in online communication 4. Analyze and use a variety of college-level resources both to identify areas for investigation of Internet social and ethical issues, and to communicate ideas: a. Analyze, raise questions, and develop critical responses to a variety of sources 5. Work collaboratively by expressing opinions with tact, listening to others, and shouldering an appropriate share of the workload: a. Listen and contribute comments to class discussion without dominating the conversation b. In small groups, stay focused on work at hand; offer input that is helpful and insightful c.
