1 Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Freshman Advising By Prof. Yun Wang MAE Undergraduate Study Committee Chair PLEASE SIGN IN!! The Henry Samueli School of Engineering UCI
2 Welcome to MAE! This advising session will describe the program identify various research and other opportunities discuss career paths available to you indicate additional advising resources answer your questions about the AE and ME programs
3 Your UCI General Catalog The UCI General Catalog contains the OFFICIAL requirements of the major You may follow requirements of any single catalog from your matriculation year forward There may be changes in course offerings that require modifications to the catalog requirements Information on course articulation from community colleges at:
4 How is the program set-up? Essential foundation: Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry The CORE Specialization and Depth Engineering Design General Education (Breadth)
Majors 5 Mechanical Engineering (188 units) *+ 4 senior technical elective classes, restricted lower-division science courses, General Education, Senior design project (MAE189, 3 units minimum) Aerospace Engineering (185 units) *+ 2 senior technical elective classes, restricted lower-division science courses, General Education, Aircraft design (MAE159) Double Majors Mechanical and Aerospace Mechanical or Aerospace and Materials Science (See their department undergraduate advisor) others are possible, but less common * Students with demonstrated competence in a foreign language are allowed to take 5 less units. + Students who do not place in Physics 7C must add at least 4 units.
6 A little friendly competition between ME s and AE s: Name the only U.S. President to have earned an engineering degree
7
General Education Requirements 8 Gen Ed requirements in Science & Technology, Quantitative Reasoning, and Laboratory will be met and overachieved through Major requirements. 10 other course slots (41 units) are identified throughout the fouryear curricula for other Gen. Ed. Requirements. If you advance-place in a foreign language, remove one course and five units from the above. Otherwise, a foreign language course is required. You are required by the Major requirements to use one of those course slots for Economics 20A. Take Economics 20A as early as possible. Take Economics 20A as early as possible.
General Education Requirements 9 The other eight courses must distribute as follows: 3 in Writing; 2 (plus Economics 23) in Social & Behavorial Sciences; and 3 in Arts & Humanities. Starting this year, ENGR 190 W (upper division writing course) becomes a required course. By double counting of some of the courses filling the above distribution requirements, the Requirements for one course in Multicultural Studies and one course in International/ Global Issues can be satisfied. Follow program of study (A sample) in catalogue.
ME and AE Prerequisite Flowchart version
11 Math and science Freshman Year Falling behind in physics and math: physics and math are pre-req. for nearly all required courses see a counselor, plan and plan and plan! summer make-up If you are off track in math or physics, see a counselor MAE10 Programming Learn it, breathe it, live it
AE / ME Freshman Year (45 units) 12 Fall (16 units) Winter (16 units) Spring (13 units) Math 2A Math 2B Math 2D MAE 10 **Phys. 7C, Phys. 7D, 7LD 7LC Chem. 1A Chem. 1LE Basic Science Elective (or Gen. Ed.) Gen. Ed. Gen. Ed.(or BSE) ** Remedial Course needed for Students who cannot place in Physics: Take Physics 2 and then Physics 7C, 7LC or take Physics 7A-7LA, or 7B-7LB.
13 AE / ME Sophomore Year (46 / 50 units) Fall (18 units) Winter (16 units) Spring (12/16 units) Math 3A Math 3D Math 2E Phys. 7E, ENGR 54 MAE 91 52A MAE 30 MAE 80 MAE 52 Gen. Ed. MAE 60 Gen. Ed.
Math and Science are important 14 you will use them in all of your engineering courses they are the foundation of engineering models and algorithms engineering models are used for predicting system behavior and achieving design objectives without system overdesign Example: Build SAE formula car as light as possible but still capable of withstanding dynamic loading during race
15 The Cut Minimum Grade requirements to enter junior courses at least C- in Math 2D, Math 2E, Phys 7C, MAE 30, MAE 80, MAE 91 GPA requirements A GPA of 2.0 or better is considered good academic standing However, better jobs and graduate school require higher GPA (3.0 or better)
16 Junior Year Heart of engineering fundamentals Considered most challenging year (9 required engineering courses) MAE machine shop is a very valuable 2-unit elective course (particularly for 199 and projects) MAE Build a robot device and compete UCI s version of crossfire?
17 AE / ME Junior Year (45/49 units) Fall (13/17 units) Winter (16 units) Spring (16 units) MAE 150, MAE 146 MAE L MAE 147 MAE 130A MAE 130B MAE 120 MAE 115 or MAE 157 MAE 135 MAE 112 (Winter) MAE 156 or 157 MAE 145 Gen. Ed. Gen. Ed. Gen. Ed.
18 Senior Year Engineering depth and design Technical electives (ME 16 units; AE 8 units) Check MAE web pages for rules applying to technical electives and a list of accepted courses ME major: check specialization requirements Double majors must fulfill all requirements for both majors.

Some Recent Changes 36 The list of choices for the basic science course requirement is extended to any General Education Category II course (Science and Technology) offered only by the Schools of Physical Sciences, Biological Sciences, and Information and Computer Sciences. (used to be Biological Science 93, Chemistry 1B, Earth System Science 25 or 55, and Physics 51A). Energy/Environmental specialization remove requirement to take courses from separate restricted lists. ENGR 7A & 7B (both must be taken) can be used as Technical Electives for both AE and ME. E190W is now required for all MAE students. Several MAE courses may be offered in multiple quarters, e.g. MAE91, MAE52,... There will be two new sections of MAE 57 per quarter starting W 14 (one for graduate students)
