1 IT SERVICES JOB DESCRIPTION & PERSON SPECIFICATION 1. JOB INFORMATION Post Title: Network Services Manager Grade: 9 Salary Range: Mode: Ref No: 46,404-50,691 per annum, with possible progression to 57,900 Full Time REQ JOB DESCRIPTION Purpose To develop and implement the strategy for the University s network infrastructure; to lead, manage and motivate a team of network professionals in the development and operation of the network infrastructure; to contribute to strategy, policy and future plans across the entire remit of ITS. 3. MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Takes full responsibility for developing and implementing the strategy for the University's network infrastructure so that it becomes the utility backbone for delivery of all appropriate services, including unified communications and systems for building management, building access and campus security. 2. Works with colleagues, particularly those in ITS and Estates, and with vendors, to agree implementation plans for the above systems and to ensure that the network infrastructure is maintained and supported as necessary for the effective operation of those systems.

2 3. Takes responsibility for security of the network infrastructure, by developing, maintaining and ensuring adherence to appropriate University-wide security policies. 4. Designs and maintains an effective interface of the University network infrastructure with that operated by other companies of the University Group, ensuring that network systems work as intended with appropriate security across the interface. 5. Plans, leads and directs the work of the Network Services Section, taking full line management responsibility for staff in the section. 6. Directs assigned development projects, liaising as necessary with internal and external personnel, and ensures that project deliverables are provided within specified budgets and time scales, 7. Takes responsibility for the provision of effective support of the network infrastructure, and related business as usual upgrades and authorised requests for change, including the provision of networking in new buildings. 8. Takes responsibility for the working methods used by the Network Services section, ensuring they are consistent with ITS standards and procedures and/or industry best practice, working to bring the former in line where necessary, 9. Keeps abreast of industry and sector developments in network infrastructure to ensure that the University takes advantage of appropriate leading and innovative technology, and the extension of the applicability of the network infrastructure. 10. Actively encourages the personal and professional development of his/her staff in order to maximise productivity for the benefit of the University. 11. Prepares budget proposals and bids, and takes full responsibility for the effective management of assigned annual and project-related budgets. 12. Chairs or serves as a member on appropriate University and ITS committees and represents the University on appropriate matters. 13. Liaises externally with the HE community, IT organisations, users and suppliers in order to discharge his/her duties and to ensure that the role is carried out to the highest level possible with the available resources. 14. Deputises wholly or in part for the Assistant Director (Infrastructure) as required. 15. Ensures and enforces the adherence of his/her staff to ITS and university procedures and processes

SUPERVISION RECEIVED Responsible to the Assistant Director (Infrastructure) of IT Services 5. SUPERVISION GIVEN Network Services Leaders 6. CONTACTS IT Services staff to Director level. Staff and students in other Schools/Support areas of the University up to VC level. Subsidiaries staff External suppliers and other education institutions.

PERSON SPECIFICATION ATTRIBUTES ESSENTIAL ADVANTAGEOUS Education / Qualifications Graduate qualification or a strong educational background CCNP/CCDP qualified or above Membership of a professional body relating to providing IS/IT solutions A degree in computer science or computer systems engineering, a higher degree with appropriate computing content Qualification/Certification in Project Management Experience (Paid and Unpaid) Excellent knowledge of networking/communication technologies and protocols Significant experience, leading and managing networking technical staff engaged in service delivery and building secure networks using firewalls, VLANS and ACLs Experience in the management, design and implementation of networks in major building constructions and refurbishments. Experience of negotiation with suppliers, contractual matters and progress chasing. Experience or knowledge of any of the following: DNS and DHCP administration Formal project management including job costing, either as team member or team leader. Proven significant experience in at least five of the following: Design and implementation of large data networks Job-related skills / Aptitudes Administration, installation of CISCO hardware and software HP OpenView and CISCOWorks Demonstrable ability to motivate others. Wireless networks CISCO IOS BGP
