10 What is an adjunct instructor? - An adjunct instructor is a temporary part-time time faculty member who is hired on a term-by by-term basis - Adjunct faculty include instructors, academic counselors and librarians

14 Adjunct instructors may teach: Lower-division (college prep, as well as freshman- and sophomore- level classes) Upper-division (junior- and senior-level classes) Certificate classes

15 Adjunct instructors must meet the same qualifications as full-time faculty

16 Master s s degree required For courses whose credits transfer to an upper-division institution or for courses already being taught at the upper-division level the instructor must have a Master s s degree with 18 graduate semester hours in the field (more details are online)

17 Maximum part-time time teaching load: Fall and Spring terms (Terms I & II) 12 equated credit hours (usually four classes that each are worth 3 credits) Summer term (Term III) 9 equated credit hours (usually three classes that each are worth 3 credits)

18 Variety of teaching approaches - Traditional delivery - Blended delivery - Distance delivery

19 Traditional delivery - All classes meet in a classroom, usually on an SPC campus - Classes may meet during the day, evening or weekend

20 Traditional delivery - Even in traditional classes, faculty still use technology for basic classroom management (such as attendance) - Faculty also are expected to be available via

21 Blended delivery - Face-to to-face contact in classroom - Web-based based activities - Distance communication (students interacting with instructor online)

22 Distance delivery - Same academic rigor and expectations - Classes are 100% online - Classes meet virtually (though rarely at set times)

23 Office space Shared office space is set aside at each campus for adjunct instructors

24 Availability to students Adjuncts teaching traditional and blended courses must be on campus and available for students 30 minutes before or after each class meeting

25 Availability to students Faculty teaching online courses must be available online for a sufficient amount of time to support interactive elements of the class, such as , chats, etc.

26 Availability to students All instructors whether teaching face- to-face or online are expected to respond to students within 24 hours of any student inquiry, 5 of the 7 days per week

27 Normal duties outside of class - Preparing for the next class meeting - Grading assignments and tests - Keeping in touch with students - Communicating with supervisor - Taking required training (covered later in webinar)

28 Number of hours worked outside the classroom Hours vary according to several factors: - whether there is a common course syllabus - whether the instructor is new to the course
