3 03 Welcome to this special brochure which celebrates the 40th Anniversary of Ulster University Business School. We hope that you will participate in our celebration! With over 6,000 students and over 60,000 alumni, Ulster University Business School is one of the largest business schools in Britain and in Ireland. Entrepreneurial, innovative and dynamic, we are committed to shaping futures: shaping the futures of our students; shaping the future of business; and shaping the future of our community. We are a research led teaching School that provides an extensive range of programmes at undergraduate, postgraduate and post experience levels. With a very strong regional presence set within a global context and with global reach, Ulster University Business School is a major contributor to the development of the Northern Ireland economy. As a member of Harvard Business School s Affiliate Network, and with strong links to the prestigious Babson College Boston (USA), the School has established itself as a major centre for management and business education of international standing. Our performance, in terms of the latest UK assessment of research, the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014, reaffirms our position as Northern Ireland s leading business school. The world leading economic and societal impact of the School s research places it 7th in the UK, out of 101 business schools included in REF For our 40th Anniversary year, as a business school that is renowned for working with business, we plan to have a series of events and activities that celebrate the work of the School over the last four decades. As part of our Anniversary celebrations, we will be highlighting the achievements of our graduates, and the impact that we have made within the local economy. 7 07 Leadership & Learning The quality of our teaching is reflected in the success of our graduates. Over 60,000 students have studied with the Business School and have gone on to pursue successful careers at home and overseas. Business leaders are made here. Inspiration & Innovation New ideas and innovation are central to our thinking, planning and approach. To ensure that our students are kept up to date with the latest insights and practice, we have over 40 Visiting Professors from across a variety of sectors such as agri-food, finance, marketing, retail and hospitality. Excellence & Engagement Our academics work to ensure that the latest knowledge is transferred from research to the real world. Since 1991 we have successfully supported 68 local companies via Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs), with a grant value of 7.6 million. We are also 8th out of 106 universities for delivering Innovation Vouchers in the UK. These support companies who wish to tap into University expertise. Out of 447 vouchers completed to date across the island of Ireland, Ulster University Business School has been involved in 55. Relevance & Research Bringing ideas and processes into the world of economic development is at the core of what we do. We work with professional bodies such as CIMA, ACCA, CIPD, CIM and CMI to ensure that our students benefit from graduating with both an academic and professional qualification. We are Northern Ireland s leading business school for research (Research Excellence Framework 2014). 10 Business School 40th Anniversary Gerry Mallon MBA Chief Executive Danske Bank Limited A certified Banker who completed an MBA with Ulster University Business School, Gerry Mallon graduated from Cambridge University in 1992 with First Class Honours in Economics. He joined the Civil Service, became Private Secretary to the Minister for the Economy in Northern Ireland and then moved to IDB becoming Director of International Operations. After five years in the Civil Service he became Senior Strategy Consultant at McKinsey and Co. in London. Gerry joined Danske Bank in 2006 as Deputy Chief Executive and Head of Business Development. In October 2009, at only 39, he took up the position of Pro Chancellor of Ulster University. He was the youngest person to hold this post.

11 11 Margaret Byrne BSc Hons Consumer Studies Chief Executive Officer Sunderland AFC Margaret Byrne grew up in Northern Ireland. She attended Ulster University Business School and BBP Law School where she studied consumer studies and law respectively. She initially trained at the eminent London solicitors firm Galbraith Branley and after specialising in criminal law, divorce cases and financial settlements, moved to Goodman Ray one of the UK s top family law solicitors. Margaret is dualqualified, a lawyer in the Republic of Ireland as well as England and Wales. She is currently the Chief Executive Officer of Sunderland AFC and sits on various footballing boards, including the FA Council, the Football Regulatory Authority, the Professional Game Board and the Premier League Legal Advisory Group.

12 Business School 40th Anniversary Jamie Delargy MSc Finance and Investment Business Editor UTV and U105 As Business Editor for UTV and U105, Jamie covers all the big stories in the industrial and commercial world. He started his career in journalism working for the Irish News, before moving to Downtown Radio and then to UTV in In addition to a degree in Philosophy from Cambridge University, Jamie also has an MSc in Finance and Investment from Ulster University Business School. He has twice been declared NI Business Journalist of the Year.

13 13 Jeremy Fitch MBA Executive Director Business Solutions Group, Invest Northern Ireland Jeremy is the Executive Director of Invest NI s Business Solutions Group. The Group work in partnership with sector, regional and international teams to ensure that businesses get the support to start and to grow. This includes help to drive innovation, use technology, access finance, develop skills and export to new markets. Jeremy is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland and graduated from Ulster University Business School with a first class honours degree in Business Studies and an International MBA.

14 Business School 40th Anniversary Julie Hastings PGD in Marketing Marketing Director Hastings Hotels Julie has been Marketing Director and previously Group Marketing Director with Hastings Hotels for 25 years. The Hastings Group includes some of Northern Ireland s most famous hotels including the iconic Europa, the Culloden and the Slieve Donard in Newcastle. She is also a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, a former board member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, a former board member of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations and Visit Belfast and current board member of the CLIC Sargent Charity. Julie obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing from Ulster University Business School and joined the school as a Visiting Professor in 2013.

15 15 Simon Hunter BA Hons Accountancy CEO Hunter Apparel One of Derry~Londonderry s oldest companies, Hunter Apparel Solutions will celebrate their 80th year in business in Having previously worked as the Sales Director, Simon grew sales on average 20%, annually for 7 years in a row. Now CEO, Simon energetically manages this technology orientated high growth, work-wear and PPE specialist, whose USP is its bespoke technology service platforms; HunterPAC, and HunterCARE. Hunter Apparel Solutions Ltd is now Ireland s leading bespoke corporate/work-wear uniform and PPE supplier. Clients include the Home Office, An Post, London Fire Brigade, Dublin Fire Brigade. The Company is also the UK s market leader in the supply of fire service uniform.

16 Business School 40th Anniversary Sean McGuire BA Hons European Business Studies Director - CBI Brussels After graduating from Ulster University in June 1997 with a BA (Hons) in European Business Studies, Sean took up his first role as European Affairs Adviser at the Engineering Employers Federation (EEF) in London. After three years he moved to Brussels to take up a position as Policy Adviser with the Confederation of British Industry (CBI). Over the years he has progressively advanced within the CBI and five years ago, was appointed Director of its Brussels Office, overseeing all of the CBI s EU lobbying activities and the promotion of business needs. Since then, Sean has also taken over responsibility for the CBI s international trade agenda, focusing on the completion of EU trade deals with India, Canada, the United States of America and Japan.

17 17 David Sterling MSc Policy Analysis Permanent Secretary Northern Ireland Civil Service David joined the Northern Ireland Civil service in 1978 and spent the early part of his career in the Police Authority for Northern Ireland and in the Northern Ireland Office. David obtained an MSc in Policy Analysis from Ulster University Business School in 1991 and in 2013 he chaired the NI Executive s G8 Summit Steering Group. David transferred to the Department of Finance and Personnel in July 2014 to become Permanent Secretary.

18 Business School 40th Anniversary Colin Walsh MBA Chair of CBI NI and Founder of Crescent Capital Colin graduated with an MBA International Business from Ulster University Business School in Colin is Chief Executive and founder of Crescent Capital and has been an active venture capital investor in the local high tech sector for the past 18 years. He has served on the boards of several local companies and has been Chair of many, so he has first hand experience of the challenges facing Northern Ireland s business sector. Crescent has raised over 60m to date from government, private and institutional investors. Its investments include several which are widely regarded as being among the most promising locally owned businesses, including Lagan Technologies, APT, Omiino, Maildistiller, Nisoft, Biznet and Andor Technology plc. Colin has been Chairman of CBI Northern Ireland since January 2014.
