Training

Emergency Action Plan Drillin- Plan an emergency drill during Safety Week to make sure employees are ready in case of an emergency. After the drill take a head count and complete a search of the building to make sure all employees followed protocol. Complete a briefing to discuss the drill and how it can be improved. Remember to document the drill for your records. One hour Project Map and Crisis Management Plan None

Fire Extinguisher Traininging Work with a vendor to supply fire extinguishers to your jobsite and have employees practice pulling the trigger and putting out the fire. Invite the fire company to come to your site to supervise the activity and establish a relationship within the department for future events and community involvement. Set up: 15 minutes Training: 30 minutes Tear down: 15 minutes Fire Extinguisher and local vendor or fire company None

First Responder Trainingg Provide First Aid, CPR and AED training to your employees in the field. In the event of an accident, time is critical. Giving the knowledge to save a life if an injury occurs will ensure your staff knows how to respond. Contact your local Red Cross to schedule an instructor to come out to your jobsite. Training classes vary in size from 12 to 30 people per class. 2 to 5 hours depending on course chosen Red Cross will bring all materials needed Around $500 More information: Visit the Red Cross website

Self Defense Class Partner with your local police or a martial arts studio to find an instructor in your area. Self-defense classes teach you how to defend yourself in a variety of situations. Knowing selfdefense can help you feel less anxious in public, be able to quickly disable an attacker and escape dangerous situations. Learning how to take advantage of time and space to make a quick getaway is a skill that can be applied to everyday situations. Providing this class for your workers will not only keep them safe off the jobsite but will give them the tools and knowledge to handle situations without the use of force. The best part is that Instructors will like opportunity to be introduced to potential clients. Inviting them to your jobsite could be at no cost to you! Depends on class chosen None Depends on class chosen

Defensive Driving Presentation Driving is a large part of our industry. Whether you are driving a company car or your personal vehicle, commuting to and from work driving safely will ensure that you go home injury-free at the end of the day! Most state Department of Driver Services have defensive driving clinics that can be held at your jobsite! Going through your state services will ensure that the curriculum is approved and that the employees taking the course will qualify for a point reductions. Most importantly you know that you have given the tools to be safe! 2 to 6 hours Pledge card - download here About $75.00

Infectious Control Infectious Control Risk Assessment (ICRA) training is necessary for any interior renovation project in an ongoing facility. It is important for all workers to understand how their choices may affect patients in hospitals or tenants of the building. Contact the American Industrial Hygiene Association for a list of local vendors that can provide training. The session should last an hour and provide the basic working knowledge of the ICRA measures and techniques. This will increase awareness of what workers need to look for when performing interior renovation work. 2 to 5 hours depending on course chosen Red Cross will bring all materials needed around $500 More information: Visit the American Industrial Hygiene Association website

Scissor and Aerial Lift Awareness Provide Scissor and Aerial Lift awareness training on your jobsite. Also consider holding full training/certification courses during Safety Week. 1 hour Scissor Lift None

Vendor Visits & Awareness Training Invite different suppliers and vendors to visit your jobsite and present their new line of products or host a training session regarding the items they specialize it. Personal Protective Equipment vendors are a great option for this type of training. Let them demonstrate why it is vital to wear your PPE at all times. 1 hour Vendors will supply None

Fall Protection Awareness Contact a local vendor to conduct fall protection awareness training on your jobsite. Your crew will learn basics of fall protection and how to inspect their equipment. Your crew will also be able to see the effects of what can happen when fall protection is not used correctly. 1 hour Vendors will supply None

Emergency Response Invite your local fire department to stage a mock rescue of a worker. This will allow you to make sure that your workers know what to do in the event of an accident. In addition, it will enable you to check that your emergency exit routes are correct and usable. Set up: 30 minutes Event: 1 hour Tear down: 15 minutes Fire department will supply None

Scaffold Safety Awareness Each year, more than 60 workers are killed by falls from scaffolds, about 1 in 5 of the fatal falls in construction. Outside of problems with planks and guardrails, the main causes of injuries and deaths on scaffolds are poor planning for assembling and taking them apart, missing tie-ins or bracing, loads that are too heavy, and being too close to power lines. Additionally, conduct while on the scaffold could cause injuries from falling objects which can hurt people below scaffolds. Teaching your workers the importance of scaffold safety could save their life or the lives of others. This awareness training is an effective way to make sure that all workers understand the correct way to assemble and work safely while on scaffolds. 1 hour Scaffold None

Informational

Health Screeningsining Work with a local clinic to have a medical technician come to your jobsite to provide a health screening as well as various other benefits for your workers. These can include: Heart Rate Check Blood Pressure Cholesterol Test Diabetes Test Flu Shots Set up: 20 minutes Screenings: 20 minutes per person Tear down: 15 minutes Clinic will bring supplies Contact local clinic

Test Your Hardhat Inspect the hardhats of everyone on site to be sure that they are in good, working condition. Have subcontractors and employees line up before entering the site in the morning. Have an employee perform the inspections. Those people with hardhats in good, working condition will receive a giveaway. Be prepared with a few hardhats in good condition in the event that someone does not pass the inspection. Consider reviewing OSHA s hardhat standards with subcontractors and employees. Depends on job size None None More information: View OSHA s hardhat standards here

Boots on the Ground It is important for all employees to know what types of Personal Protective Equipment are available to them. One type of PPE that protects us from injury everyday are our boots! One type of boot that some field workers are required to wear are safety toe or steel toed work boots. Contact a local boot vendor to set up a demonstration to illustrate the advantages of wearing safety toe boots if an object were to land on a workers foot. The demonstration consists of using Fall Protection rig to drop a 250 pound weight from 3 feet onto both a safety toe and a soft toe boot. Inside both sets of work boots insert putty into the front section of the boot to resemble toes. It will not take long for your crew to see the value in the safety toe boots! 1 hour Fall protection rig; soft toe boot; safety toe boot; putty; piece of plywood Minimal, cost of putty

Safety Display Give your employees the opportunity tos how everyone why they work safe! Post a board or poster for employees to add photos of friends, family and other meaningful things throughout the week. 15 minutes Poster or board Minimal, cost of supplies

Safety Pledge Card & Poster Have your workers recommit to safety by signing a pledge card or poster! This pledge empowers the person who signs it to work safe, maintain a safe work environment, watch out for their coworkers as well as the power to stop work if they see any unsafe practice. Laminate the card so that it can be kept in a wallet or a place that it will always remind them that every accident is preventable. Sample Text: My Pledge is to be safe! I commit that I will work safely today and every day. I am not only responsible for my safety, but also the safety of my co-workers. I have been empowered by (company) to stop any activity on this project that I feel is unsafe, without fear of retribution. My pledge to work safely is a personal commitment to myself, my co-workers and my family. Depends on size of job Poster or paper for cards Minimal, cost of supplies

Games and Trivia

Safety Triviaining Participants will be asked a few random safety trivia questions during lunch or safety discussions. Give the participant with the correct answer a prize! Raffles can be included in Safety Trivia. If the person answers correctly, they are given a raffle ticket; hold a Safety Trivia event each day of the week. At the end of the week, hold a drawing for one or more winners. Games such as bingo or cornhole can also be included in Safety Trivia. 30 minutes + Giveaways (items from Safety Week shop, gift cards) and other items depending on game Giveaways and misc. supplies

Safety Scavenger Hunt Set up stations throughout the project such as a table with power tools; a ladder; a manlift etc. In each instance something or several things should be incorrect at the station. Give each worker a worksheet and ask them to identify the hazards at each station. The worker correctly identifying the most hazards wins. Be sure to set up stations that have hazards, but will not put anyone in danger. The stations need to be clearly marked off so that someone does not go to work in these areas. Explain the activity to workers and possibly issue worksheets in Spanish if there is someone able to translate answers onsite. The worksheet should simply have the station number or identifier along with blank lines for the answers. Set up: 1 hour Event time: 1 hour Tear down: 45 minutes Jobsite equipment; worksheets; pens or pencils; prizes Giveaways and supplies

Safety Survivor This event is ideal for a small site. Design and setup up a Survivor-like challenge with stations where workers compete. Give each station a point value and how participants rotate from station to station. The person with the most points wins! Some examples of stations would include: Longest wall-squat Most push-ups in a minute Who can list the most OSHA standards in a minute Remember to have some giveaways for the participants! Set up: 1 hour Event time: 1 hour Tear down: 45 minutes Depends on stations Giveaways and supplies

Events

Family Day Have workers bring their loved ones to the jobsite for an onsite lunch. This will be a great time to have workers discuss how important safety is to them and why they work safe everyday. Make sure to have extra PPE on hand if some family members want to take a tour of the jobsite and see where their loved one works. 2 hours Food and drink, utensils, napkins; extra PPE Depends on size of job

Safety Week Lunchng Hold a lunch to thank your employees for working safe. This is the perfect opportunity to discuss Safety. 1 hour Food and drink, utensils, napkins; extra PPE Depends on size of job
