5 OCDA DUID Trends Fewer cases were presented to OCDA for filing in 2012 than in While there was a decrease in the number of DUI alcohol cases submitted, there was an increase in the number of DUI D cases submitted. The crime lab witnessed the same trend.

7 OC DUID program In 2010 Orange County agencies (OCDA and OC Crime Lab) determined there was a rise in DUI Drug cases. In 2011 OCDA applied for a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) for DUID collaboration. Program involved 3 part collaboration:

11 Goals of the OC DUID program Train 100 officers to become certified DREs (Drug Recognition Experts) Provide latest testing equipment and staffing for the OC Crime Lab Dedicate vertical prosecutors to handle DUID cases. As a result of successful year, we received a 2 nd grant in 2012, a 3 rd grant in 2013, a 4 th in 2014 and a 5 th in 2015.

12 OC DUID program We received 100% participation from Orange County police agencies in the law enforcement training component; To date, we have trained over 200 officers to be Drug Recognition Experts (DRE) We aggressively prosecuted drug impaired drivers, filing 1528 cases in As the direct result of the support of the Board of Supervisors, the OC crime lab enhanced their toxicology/duid section.

15 A model program We continue to train police officers, toxicologists and Deputy District Attorneys about the importance of traffic safety and Drug impaired driving. We now have 8 dedicated DUID attorneys in Orange County. We have developed an expertise that allows our conviction rates to remain the high 90% range.

16 DUI collision & fatality trends In 2006, there were 1,247 DUI collisions resulting in death or injury in Orange County. The number dropped to 1,095 in There were 52 people killed in DUI related collisions in That number dropped to 31 in Data obtained from the CHP & the Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System., SWITRS.

19 County DUI Efforts 12 Orange County police agencies also received grants from OTS to increase their DUI investigative efforts, including more checkpoints. As a result some agencies are making more DUI arrests. California s DUI fatalities are at the lowest levels since 1944.
