16 Why should you become a teacher? Teachers are leaders, role models and mentors. By becoming a teacher you can make a positive difference by helping young people maximize their potential. You will use your intellect and communication skills to connect with students. You will have the ability to make every day in your classroom different and unique. Students will challenge you to use your creativity to help them form positive outlooks on the world and you will make a difference in each of their lives. Why should you choose the Texas Tech College of Education? Becoming a teacher is challenging, but we will help you every step of the way. Our field-based experiences give you the inclass opportunities that you will need to feel confident in front of your classroom. You will be ready to interview for that first job, address students' specific needs and handle the legal issues of teaching. We will also prepare you for the Texas licensure exam (TExES) with college sponsored practice TExES tests. With an overall pass rate of 97% our students easily make the transition to their first job. The key component of our program that sets us apart from other teacher preparation programs in the nation is called TechTeach. TechTeach is the Texas Tech College of Education's teacher education program. One if its goals is aimed at setting Tech graduates apart from graduates prepared in other teacher education programs. We want to create measurably the best teachers in the state of Texas and across the nation. This new program will not only help our students become the best teachers but will also benefit those whom they teach. Some of the program highlights include: Full-year of student teaching without adding a semester Student teaching based on co-teaching rather than a takeover method Clinically intensive and competency based Our student teachers will be a desired asset to campus administrators and mentor teachers Graduates from the TechTeach program will be districts clear first choice for employment After two years of teaching, we believe our graduates will perform above the districts average Use of the Teachscape system which allows for self-assessment CONTACT US College of Education Texas Tech University Box Lubbock, Texas techteach@ttu.edu Texas Tech University College of Education TTUEducation College of Education Texas Tech University
17 My students and I have a wonderful experience with TechTeach. With the help of my teacher candidate, we have been able to develop richer and more meaningful lessons. We have also used the co-teaching style of teaching to its fullest. Together, we can ensure that at the end of each class period every student has learned a new concept and developed or strengthened a pre-existing concept. Jennifer Mayo 7th grade Math What is TechTeach? TechTeach is a clinically intensive, competency based program designed to prepare teachers who will improve the academic achievement of K-12 students. It is among the first in the nation to combine intense, clinical experiences with opportunities to dramatically improve effective teaching behaviors in order to impact student learning. New teacher candidates will start working in classrooms in the first semester, work closely with mentors to improve the achievement of their students throughout the program, and receive support and specific feedback aimed at improving their teaching behaviors. Course work during the program is practical, and designed to prepare teacher candidates to implement teaching that impacts student learning. Key features of TechTeach There are four key features of TechTeach that set it apart from other programs, and in combination make this experience so powerful. TechTeach uses the TAP rubric to clearly define effective instructional behaviors, and provide concrete ways for teacher candidates to improve. TechTeach candidates begin working in classrooms in the first semester and begin student teaching one full semester earlier than other programs. TechTeach candidates use state of the art digital technology to capture and review their own instruction. Starting in the first semester, candidates use their own video footage for evaluation and improvement. TechTeach candidates work in partner districts alongside an experienced, handpicked mentor teacher committed to the professional growth of their teacher candidate. Co-teaching involves working together to plan, carry out, evaluate and adjust instruction in whole-group and small-group settings.
18 The College of Education works closely with other colleges on campus to help you earn your teaching certificate in many areas.
