E. W. Scripps School of Journalism Priority Date Dec. 15 Applicants to the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism are encouraged, though not required, to submit an essay detailing how you want to help shape the future of journalism, advertising or public relations. No separate application form is required for admission to the School. If you are not offered direct admission to the School of Journalism but are admitted to the University, you may still be eligible for other available programs in the Scripps College of Communication. You may also enter University College as an undecided student or select another major for which you may qualify. Most admitted students not offered direct admission to Journalism may appeal the decision. If applicable, information on other available majors and appeal instructions will be included in your decision letter, and the deadline for appeals is March 1, For more information about the School, visit School of Visual Communication Deadline Dec. 15 In addition to your application completion deadline of December 15, 2011, prospective students must complete an on-campus interview/portfolio review before a final decision regarding direct admission to the major can be made. If you take the ACT, we strongly encourage you to take the optional writing portion of the test. If you have been out of school for more than one year, test scores are not required unless specifically requested by Undergraduate Admissions. Ohio University requires that scores be sent directly from the testing agency. Ohio University s ACT code is 3314, and our SAT code is ESSAY Applicants to the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism are encouraged, though not required, to submit an essay detailing how you want to help shape the future of journalism, advertising or public relations. If you have been out of high school for more than one year, you must submit an essay detailing your activities since graduation. Applicants to the Honors Tutorial College must answer three essay questions on the supplemental HTC application. For all other applicants, the essay is optional. If you would like to submit an optional essay, the kinds of topics that you may wish to address could include describing any academic challenges you have faced, your academic and career objectives, or your involvement in community affairs. Recommended length is words. OTHER OPTIONAL APPLICATION MATERIALS You may choose to submit additional application materials with your application. Optional application materials could include teacher or counselor recommendations; lists of extra-curricular activities or employment; and/or descriptions of honors, awards, and achievements. Your full name should be clearly displayed on any supplemental documentation you provide. SCHOLARSHIPS AND FINANCIAL AID Financial Aid for U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents Ohio University participates in all federal and state financial aid programs, which require U. S. citizenship or permanent residency status for consideration. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is required for need-based financial aid and needbased scholarship consideration. Freshman Scholarship Information To be considered for scholarships at Ohio University, you must apply for admission and be admitted by February 1, Scholarship decisions will be based on academic record (class rank, g.p.a., ACT/SAT) results on file as of March 1, No new academic information can be used for consideration after this date. For students who have submitted multiple test scores, the highest score on file as of March 1, 2012, will be used to determine eligibility. For ACT scores, the composite will be used. For SAT scores, the highest combined math and critical reading scores will be used. Writing test scores will not be factored into consideration for scholarship awarding. No separate form is required to be considered for University merit-based academic scholarships; however, some scholarships have a need-based component. Ohio University must receive your FAFSA results by March 15, 2012, to be considered for these awards. You will be notified by the Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships if you are eligible to receive an academic scholarship.
3 SCHOLARSHIPS AND FINANCIAL AID (continued) Transfer Scholarship Information A limited number of competitive transfer scholarships are available for students entering in fall semester only. To be eligible for consideration, you must apply and be admitted by May 15, You must also have completed at least 45 quarter hours or 30 semester hours of college-level coursework by May 15. Honors Tutorial College Non-Ohio Residents Tuition and Fees $ 18,834 Room (standard double) 5,457 Meal Plan (Flex 14) 5,247 TOTAL $ 29,538** The Honors Tutorial College offers a nationally distinctive undergraduate education based on the British tutorial model developed at Oxford and Cambridge universities. Tutorials consist of courses taught either one-on-one with a student and a professor or a very small seminar consisting of several Honors Tutorial College students and a professor. In general, Honors Tutorial College students take one tutorial per academic semester along with a mix of traditional courses. An education grounded in this approach provides for exceptional faculty contact, substantial mentoring, and heightened intellectual development. Success in tutorial education also requires a high degree of maturity, selfmotivation, curiosity, and mental energy. In judging whether a tutorial education is the right path for you, please take a moment to read through the document titled Something Completely Different: An Honors Tutorial College Undergraduate Education available online at on the About HTC tab. The College is highly selective, typically enrolling only 60 students each year across all of its programs of study. Honors Tutorial College Application Process The application deadline for the Honors Tutorial College is December 1, Honors Tutorial College applicants should complete both the standard Ohio University application form on pages 5-9, and the Honors Tutorial College application supplement on page 10. On the standard Ohio University application form, be sure to check the box indicating that you are applying to the Honors Tutorial College and use the program of study codes on page 13 specifically designated for Honors Tutorial College degree programs. Mail both sections of the form, along with two letters of recommendation and any required additional material (see below for programs of study requiring additional application materials) directly to HTC, 35 Park Place, 1 Ohio University, Athens OH Programs of Study Requiring Additional Admission Material: Please do not send original artwork or other one-of-a-kind materials. Due to the number of applications received, it will not be possible to return your materials. Biological Sciences: Applicants should submit two letters of recommendation, at least one from a math or science teacher. Business: Applicants should submit one writing sample, preferably a research paper. Communication Studies: Applicants should submit one writing sample. The writing sample may be any paper from high school. Dance: Submit a written essay on the significance of dance to your career objectives, along with two letters of recommendation, one from a dance instructor and one from an academic teacher or counselor. In addition, submit a writing sample from one of your academic courses of study (e.g., history, English, literature, science). English: Applicants should submit a copy of the best paper you have written for an English class. Film: Submit a portfolio of recent creative work and a recent substantive writing sample (creative writing projects fall into this category). Journalism: Submit a writing portfolio including any samples of published work. Students who intend to study broadcast journalism are also encouraged to submit short video or audio clips in addition to the writing portfolio. Media Arts and Studies: Applicants to the audio, video, and digital media sequences must submit a portfolio of creative work and a recent substantive writing sample. Applicants to the media studies and management sequence need not submit a portfolio. 4 Spanish: Applicants should submit two letters of recommendation that speak to your knowledge and use of the language and culture. In addition, submit samples of graded papers in Spanish with at least two pages of writing with teacher comments. Studio Art: Submit an electronic portfolio consisting of 20+ digital images of your original art work, including 5 drawings done from life, 5-10 objects or images of the objects that display your ability to think and work conceptually and technically, and 5 images of your choice. This should be a CD OR a memory stick onto which you have copied a Power Point, PDF OR jpegs. You may submit multiple views, but must include pieces of original work that best demonstrate your creativity. Every applicant is required to submit two letters of recommendation with their application. Please clip application materials together and submit in an envelope, rather than a folder or binder. All materials should be mailed directly to the Honors Tutorial College and must be received on or before December 1, Ohio University Honors Tutorial College 35 Park Place 1 Ohio University Athens OH Complete applications received by December 1 will be reviewed by HTC to determine whether the application will be forwarded to the Director(s) of Studies (faculty members responsible for administering each program of study) for further review. After December 1, 2011, Directors of Studies will select candidates for required on-campus interviews. Interview invitations will be mailed in late December. Applicants who do not receive an invitation to interview for an HTC program automatically will be reviewed for admission to the appropriate college. Because of the nature of a tutorial-education, an on-campus interview with Director(s) of Studies and faculty tutors is required. There will be two interview days in January 2012: January 7 and January 14. Applicants will be assigned an interview date. Applicants interviewing in music or performance theater will audition on Interview Day. After interviews are completed, offers of admission will be sent to selected applicants during the first week of February. Interviewees who are not offered admission to an HTC program will automatically be reviewed for admission to the appropriate college.
