1 October 28, 2013 Fall Semester ATTENTION TEACHER EDUCATION MAJORS As a junior in The Patton College of Education at Ohio University, you are working toward your Professional Internship in Teaching. Your internship is the capstone experience that allows you to put theory into practice as you work closely with and are mentored by a master teacher. An application for Professional Internship in Teaching is required. The deadline for applications is November 1st each year. For example: ALL applications for the semesters beginning August 2014 and January 2015 must be sent by November 1, The application is available online on The Gladys W. and David H. Patton College website under Forms ( Please return the application electronically to Debra Shaw shawd1@ohio.edu by the November 1 deadline. The address is on the application. Application must be typed. Handwritten applications are unacceptable and will be returned to the applicants.

2 The 11th Annual Rural-Urban Collaborative The Rural Urban Collaborative Symposium is Friday, November 1st at OU- Zanesville. We will meet in the McCracken Hall parking lot at 7:50am and the buses will leave at 8:00am SHARP. The event begins at 10:00am and ends at 3:00pm. So, we should be back on campus by 5:00pm. You will need to dress in "business casual" attire similar to how you would dress for your field placements. You do not need to bring anything to taking notes, but a pen/ pencil will be handy. Lunch will be provided! Once the event begins, you will need to put your phones and other electronic devices away. This is to show respect for the speakers and to prevent distractions. We have lots of great speakers and events packed into our agenda including 1) The Principal of the Columbus Global Academy, the largest ESL school in the United States 2) The Executive Director of Secondary Schools, Curriculum & Instruction, for Akron City Schools 3) Teachers and Principals from both rural and urban schools to answer your questions We are looking forward to a great event! Remember that the symposium counts as part of your observation hours for your grade in EDTE If you are completely unable to attend due to class conflicts or have other related issues, please me ASAP. "Victorian Literature in London" will be offered for the first time in Summer 2014 (May 17 - June 21). This program is open to all Ohio University students, but it is particularly relevant for English and Integrated Language Arts majors. 12 O H I O C H A N G E S E D U C A T O R L I C E N S U R E T E S T V E N D O R S Beginning Sept. 1, all Ohio pre-service educator licensure candidates taking licensure examinations and all licensed educators pursuing a license in a new area will take the Ohio Assessments for Educators (OAE), a new series of tests developed by Evaluation Systems Group of Pearson. Ohio Assessments for Educators will replace the current Praxis II examinations, except for the world languages exams, which will continue to be provided by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. Licensure candidates who test before Sept. 1 still will take the Praxis II exams and may use them whenever they apply for Ohio licensure, provided they are passed before Sept. 1. Two aspects of the OAE series will especially benefit teachers: Convenience The Ohio Assessments for Educators series offers state-of-the-art, computer-based assessments across content levels and grade levels. Licensure candidates can take the tests at more locations and can get quicker results. The assessments will be available year round by appointment, except for Sundays and certain holidays. Relevance The OAE are based on contemporary standards of teaching and learning, including the Common Core State Standards. A new OAE website helps licensure candidates determine which tests they may take. The site also includes testing locations, and candidate FAQs and other features. Website: F I E L D E X P E R I E N C E T R A VEL Driver Responsibilities when Traveling to Field Experience and Professional Internship Sites Often, teacher education candidates must travel by car to their field experience and professional internship school sites. Carpooling is encouraged when appropriate. Candidates need to be aware of driver responsibilities when traveling to these sites. Specifically, Ohio law requires: The driver to have a valid driver s license The driver must be able to show proof of insurance or other financial responsibility coverage
