This is an essential course document. Orientation is compulsory. Professional Practice Placement Professional Practice forms a substantive element of the course. In Semester 1 this takes the form of five distributed days, followed by a five week block. Semester 2 provides the largest professional practice placement with a six week block. In addition, many of other units in the course also include authentic school experiences that range from observation to team-teaching in specific learning areas. Over the duration of the course you will engage with a wide range of secondary education settings. Clearances required for Professional Practice Placements As mid-year entrants do not go out on their practice placements until Semester more information will be provided at orientation for DO NOT obtain these clearances at this time. All information related to fees, enrolment, library loans and so on will be sent to this account. The Learning Management System (LMS). This site includes valuable information about additional learning opportunities, employment and resources

8 Texts To find any set texts for your units please visit the Co-op bookshop webpage You need to select University of Western Australia in Step 01 and the semester in which the unit commences in Step 02 then click the Search button. A subject list will then appear further down the page from which you can select your units. Please note that not all your units will have a set text. Teachers Language and Numeracy Competency The Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST) require pre-service teachers to demonstrate literacy and numeracy skills within the top 30% of the Australian population. This is a result of professional and community concerns about low levels of teacher literacy and numeracy competency. Whilst a national approach to this requirement is still in development, at UWA, consistent with other universities, pre-service teachers are required to demonstrate English language competency through satisfactory completion of assessments set by the faculty. Pre-service teachers will sit some literacy assessments on orientation day 2016 and they will include assessment of spelling, grammar and the ability to write a short essay using appropriate text structure and vocabulary. To assist you in preparing for this, we recommend that you purchase the following book: Faigley, L. (2012). The Little Penguin Handbook, Pearson, Australia. (Available from the UWA bookshop, packaged version of text includes online access code to My Writing Lab Global, where you can self-test and access online resources). If you do not pass the literacy tests, you will be given an opportunity to sit parallel assessments at a later time (dates to be advised). In addition to the tests mentioned above, a high standard of literacy must be demonstrated in all assignments and on professional practice. Oral language standards will be assessed in several units through student presentations. It is recommended that pre-service teachers experiencing serious difficulties with their literacy should seek help to improve their reading and writing skills through Student Support Services (telephone: or online: ). Timetable A draft version of the timetable is available at: you are enrolled, timetables can be accessed through On Line Class Registration (OLCR), please go to website for assistance. If you have checked the timetable and have a clash, please contact Anna Johansson by either anna-carin.johansson@uwa.edu.au or telephone: Academic Calendar Please check the academic calendar when planning holidays and special events. You should note that the vacation periods occur in three two weeks blocks rather than a large break in the middle of the year. Pre-service teachers are encouraged to reduce their external commitments during professional practice periods to cope with the demanding work load. 7
