1 THE PAUL AND ROSEMARY TRIBLE LIBRARY CHRISTOPHER NEWPORT UNIVERSITY FACULTY HANDBOOK (Reference) OR (Circulation)

2 WELCOME TO THE PAUL AND ROSEMARY TRIBLE LIBRARY The purpose of the Trible Library is to collect, to make readily available, and to assist in the use of library materials needed by the faculty, students, and staff of the University. The entire library staff is committed to this service philosophy. The current building opened in January of 2008 and combines the traditional library of the past with current 21 st century technology in order to provide the best possible atmosphere for research, learning and scholarly interaction. The stunning architecture combined with the classic interior provides the campus community with a warm and inviting space for their academic studies outside of the classroom. A print collection of approximately 218,000 volumes, over 1500 periodicals, as well as access to more than 3000 media items is available for your use. This collection is supplemented by 24/7 access to materials through the extensive online resources available on the library s webpage ( The e- collection is provided through subscription services and provides access to full-text journal articles, e-books, and a variety of other reference materials. In addition the library s internet resources collection highlights the many free scholarly collections, tools and resources that are provided by institutions throughout the world. The building has two large quiet study rooms upstairs and group study rooms on both floors. Casual seating as well as study carrels makes a comfortable environment for those with different learning styles. A secure 24/7 study space with computer access is available after the main part of the building is closed. Computer workstations with printing capability are located both upstairs and downstairs. Wireless access is available throughout the building for those that wish to bring their laptops or other wireless enabled devices. IT Services provides a help desk which can aid you in setting up your laptop for access to the campus wireless network. Einstein s café provides a comfortable space for relaxing with a cup of coffee, tea, or soda. The café provides a place where faculty members are able to interact with students in a less formal environment than what is typically provided by a classroom. Meeting space may be scheduled if you need a place to confer with your colleagues, committee members, or a small group of students. Upstairs you and your students will find the Trible Library Media Center, two instruction classrooms and the CNU Center for Academic Success. The building is also home to The Mariners Museum Library ( It holds the largest maritime history collection in the Western Hemisphere. This facility is not managed by Trible Library, so faculty members wishing to use these materials should consult with The Mariners Museum Library staff (phone or [email protected]). The Trible library is an active member of the VIVA Consortium ( the VTC ( and the VPLC ( We look forward to assisting you and your students with your research needs. We hope that this handbook will provide you with information for a dynamic, productive and enjoyable library experience.

3 Reference Services The reference collection is a 21 st century interdisciplinary assortment that includes materials ranging from the traditional print resources to dynamic online databases with indexing, abstracting, and full-text access for journal articles, newspapers, e-books and more. 6 Course Reserves Faculty may place required reading materials or media (library owned or personal copies) on reserve for their students. Materials owned by other libraries cannot be placed on reserve. Reserve loan periods vary from 2-hours to 2-weeks, and are chosen by the faculty member. Electronic Reserve (e-reserve) is available for articles. Copyright compliance is the responsibility of the faculty member. Materials placed on reserve are processed as quickly as possible, but please allow a minimum of 3 days for processing. All materials are removed from reserve at the end of the semester unless otherwise specified. Students may check-out the reserve materials at the circulation desk during normal library hours. Students may access e-reserve materials 24/7 using their last names and library barcode numbers as the user name and password. Detailed information on acceptable reserve materials, copyright, loan periods and more can be accessed at URL: Reserve forms are available: at the Circulation Desk, on the library's website ( or you may have forms delivered via campus mail (call ). Alternatives to traditional reserves If you plan on putting a large number of items on reserve and you expect each student to read each document, you may want to consider using a course pack instead. The total amount of material on reserve for a class should be small in proportion to the total assigned reading for that class when invoking fair use. You may wish to use Scholar/Blackboard for your course readings. This allows you to upload personally created documents and link to websites and articles available from the Library s online databases. The contact person for Scholar is Shannon Phillips, Associate Director of Information Technology Services for Academic Computing ([email protected] or ). For copyright reasons, it is preferable to link to articles available from the library s online databases. For help on finding persistent links to e-journals, you may go to the library's Persistent Article Links webpage ( If you have questions or need further assistance, please contact the Access Services Librarian, Beth Young, at or Reference at or the library at [email protected].

12 Periodicals The periodical collection is available in a variety of formats: paper, microform, and on-line. Many of the online versions may be accessed from your office or off-campus. The best method for locating an article on a topic is to use one of the online databases provided through the library s homepage ( These can provide a citation to the article and many will also provide the full-text of the article. However, if the full-text is not available, the Journal Finder database will help you locate it elsewhere in the library or let you know if we do not have access to it so that you can use the ILL service to request a copy. Journal Finder Accessing Using Many of the databases provide a quick link to Journal Finder from within your search results. From the library's homepage From inside the online catalog using the link on the main screen Directly at Type in the title for the journal, magazine, or newspaper in the Title Search box Click the Search button The results screen will show the title (in some cases a list of titles) If there is a computer icon to the left of the title click it to see what years are available as well as which databases provide access. Sometimes there are multiple choices to choose from, be sure to check the start and end dates in order to know which one should contain the article. Sometimes the link will take you to the actual journal within a database, other links will take you to the main database screen from which you can navigate to or search for the journal or article. If there is book icon to the left of the title, click it to see what years are available and if the date that you need is available in print (bound), on microfiche or on microfilm. The envelope icon sends you to the ILLiad logon page where you can request the article through ILL if necessary. The car icon takes you to a page suggesting other ways to locate the periodical yourself. If you have trouble accessing an online journal through Journal Finder, please let us know and we will try to resolve the problem. (Reference Desk or [email protected]) If the library does not have a particular journal you will be taken to a screen indicating this by stating: I did not find any titles that match your search. You may wish to check that you did not make a typo or that you did not abbreviate portions of the title in your initial search.

Since 1973, consortium institution libraries have participated in reciprocal direct borrowing to students, faculty, and staff of member institutions. In most cases, the automated reference services of consortium libraries are also available to member institutions. To see what institutions are included visit the website above or download this MS Word document The service is available to Faculty, students, and staff at CNU. Come to Trible Library First! If you need to borrow materials from a consortium library, please come to the circulation desk to apply for and obtain a consortium borrower's card before you go to the other library. The card is good for only 1 semester. Things to know before you go! The borrower must present a valid consortium borrower's card and photo ID at the lending library. The lending library determines whether borrowing privileges will be extended or denied. Library privileges are determined by the policies of the lending library, and vary from library to library. To request specific information, call the lending library first, and identify yourself as a consortium borrower. Fines for overdue books and replacement costs for lost books must be paid at the lending library. Circulation and Interlibrary Loan privileges at all VTC member libraries will be blocked if you have overdue books or unpaid fines at any lending institution. Other sanctions may apply as determined by the lending and/or home institution. No charge. The Virginia Peninsula Literary Consortium was formed in the Fall of 2006 to stimulate public interest in authors, books, reading, and libraries, and to encourage the study and enjoyment of books. It was also created to encourage cooperation among all types of libraries on the Peninsula. Together, these libraries serve about 800,000 residents. Each year, the Consortium plans to present regionally and nationally recognized authors to entertain and inspire the citizens of the Virginia Peninsula.
