1 Scaan SOUTH COUNTY AA NEWSLETTER South Palm Beach County Intergroup Association, Inc. Serving A.A. Groups in Boca Raton, Boynton Beach, Delray Beach and Lantana 31 Years of Service ~ The Hand of AA Hours a Day Volume 31, Issue 7 JULY 2015 I arrived in 2002 dying from untreated alcoholism. I came into the fellowship, found a sponsor who shared his experience, strength and hope and a program of recovery. This, of course, is the first 164 pages in the textbook of Alcoholics Anonymous. By the grace of God, I ve been sober ever since. But on this day, I wonder what would happen if I wanted to get sober 80 years before. First of all, society would have labeled me a lazy weakling and sinner. My family would have admitted me to a Psychiatric Hospital. There were no detoxes, no half-way houses, and no rehabs. So, once in the psych-ward, the doctors would experiment with untested drugs to see how one s body might react. There was also electroconvulsive therapy (ECT)and psychotherapy. Upon release, if caught drunk again, another trip to the psych-ward and if diagnosed helpless lobotomy was the next option! Remember that Alcohol was illegal, it was prohibition. With no Big-Book, or meetings the alcoholic faced insanity, institutions, and death. June 10th, 1935, two men, a doctor from Akron, Ohio, and a stock broker from New York, both alcoholic, set out with a problem, solution, and a plan of action they believed could help alcoholics recover from a hopeless state of mind and body. In July of 1935, they treated a man, Bill D. in Akron City Hospital. He recovered immediately. The theory was one alcoholic, helping another alcoholic find a spiritual remedy July 2-5, International Convention 80 Years Happy, Joyous and Free 2015 International Convention of Alcoholics Anonymous July 2-5, Atlanta, Georgia would take away the craving for alcohol. They found spirituality in the Oxford groups. By late 1937, there were about 40 members. The fledging society knew they had to leave the Oxford Group and set out on their own. They also knew there message had to be preserved for generations to come. So they set out to write a book. By the spring of 1939, the no name fellowship started to call themselves Alcoholics Anonymous from the name of its book. By then, there were 100 members. 80 years later, the sick and suffering alcoholic human being can find love, sponsorship, and a program of recovery in the rooms of Alcoholics Anonymous around the world. This, of course, is a simplified version of what happened. Many people paid the price. And because of all our fellow AA s who came before us, alcoholics no longer have to die of the disease of alcoholism. I believe that those who live with alcoholism and have found the solution in Alcoholics Anonymous, know we are all God s children! Each day, as the result of working and living the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous one alcoholic passes on a message of recovery to another still sick and suffering alcoholic. God Bless Tommy B. THE STEPS & THE TRADITIONS STEP 7 - Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings. TRADITION 7 - Every A.A. group ought to be fully self-supporting, declining outside contributions.
