2 Office of Research Integrity & Ethics Vision: The ORI&E Office will cultivate a university-wide research environment exhibiting the highest level of scholarship in order to become nationally recognized for its commitment to competence and integrity in groundbreaking research. Mission: The ORI&E promotes a culture of engagement and self-directed, responsible conduct of research through the development of competence in principles, integrity, and compliance with relevant laws, regulations and policies. This is facilitated through the dissemination of information and assistance to faculty, staff, and students as they strive to model best practices in research.

4 Office of Research Compliance: Committees The Institutional Review Board (IRB) must review and approve all research involving human subjects.

5 Office of Research Compliance Committees The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee must approve all projects involving the use of vertebrate animals in research, teaching, and service.

6 Office of Research Compliance: Committees The Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) must review and approve all research or academic programs involving any biological agent that can be (1) potentially harmful to the environment, (2) potentially pathogenic to humans, (3) potentially harmful to any plant or animal, or (4) includes recombinant DNA.

7 Office of Research Compliance Responsible Conduct of Research The practice of scientific investigation with integrity. It involves the awareness and application of established professional norms and ethical principles in the performance of all activities related to scientific research.

8 Office of Research Compliance NIH Policy for Responsible Conduct of Research NIH requires that all trainees, fellows, participants, and scholars receiving support through any NIH training, career development award (individual or institutional), research education grant, and dissertation research grant must receive instruction in responsible conduct of research. This policy has been implemented with all new and renewal applications submitted on or after January 25, 2010, and for all continuation (Type 5) applications with deadlines on or after January 1, 2011.
