1 COURSE OUTLINE UCLA Extension - Business and Management Course Title: Advanced Human Resources Management Course Number: X 482 Quarter: Winter Year: 2012 Instructor: Farnaz Tabaee, MA, JCTC farnaz.tabaee@gmail.com Tel: Dates: Tuesday, 6:30-9:30pm, UCLA: 5436 Boelter Hall January 10 - March 20 Course Description: This advanced course is designed for HR professionals who wish to make an effective contribution at a strategic level in today s rapidly changing organizations, internally or as external consultants. Students will integrate the knowledge gained through previous coursework and experience and build on that conceptual foundation through lecture, class discussions, presentations, real-life case studies, and practical application. Emerging issues in human resource management will be discussed. Covered topics include: transforming HR from the outside in, HR professionals as strategic partners, the six domains of HR competencies, advanced communication and negotiation tactics for effective dialogue with senior management, designing strategies to re-engage employees and heighten productivity, understanding and addressing the increasing multigenerational issues, and implementing a retention strategy that addresses the needs of all generations. Advanced HR management skills such as consultation skills, coaching, change management, and facilitation skills will be explored and practiced. Students will learn how to safeguard their organization s bottom-line by acquiring the high level skills needed to excel as an HR leader. Goals & Objectives: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1) Explain the future trends influencing the workforce, the workplace, and HR 2) Identify the strategies for HR transformation
2 3) Describe the six domains of HR competencies of successful HR professionals 4) Practice various communication and negotiation tactics for effective dialogue with senior management 5) Design strategies to re-engage employees and heighten productivity 6) Illustrate the increasing multi-generational issues, and implement a retention strategy that addresses the needs of all generations. 7) Practice advanced HR management skills such as consultation skills, coaching, change management, and facilitation skills 8) Apply a change management model to a real life work project REQUIRED READING: Ulrich, D., Justin Allen, Wayne Brockbank, Jon Younger, and Mark Nyman (2009). HIGHLY RECOMMENDED READING: Ulrich, D., W. Brockbank, D. Johnson, K. Sandholtz & J. Younger (2008). HR Competencies: Mastery at the Intersection of People and Business, Arlington, VA: Society for Human Resource Management. RECOMMENDED READING MATERIAL: As assigned. Incompletes: The interim grade Incomplete may be assigned when a student's work is of passing quality, but a small portion of the course requirements is incomplete for good cause (e.g. illness or other serious problem). It is the student s responsibility to discuss with the instructor the possibility of receiving an I grade as opposed to a non-passing grade. The student is entitled to replace this grade by a passing grade and to receive unit credit provided they complete the remaining coursework satisfactorily, under the supervision of and in a time frame determined by the instructor in charge, but in no case later than the end of next academic quarter. At that time, the Registrar will cause all remaining Incompletes to lapse to the grade "F". Note: Receiving an I does not entitle a student to retake all or any part of the course at a later date. 2 P a g e
3 Student Behavior involving cheating, copying other s work, and plagiarism is not tolerated and will result in disciplinary action. Students are responsible for being familiar with the information on Student Conduct in the General Information Section of the UCLA Extension Catalog or on the website at Standards for Evaluation: Attendance is required. Students are encouraged to attend class meetings. If you miss more than two classes, your performance will suffer and you may have difficulty receiving credit for the class. GRADING SYSTEM: Class Participation =40 points =20% Group Chapter Presentation =40 points =20% Communication Tactics Discussion =20 points =10% Individual Presentation on the Final Paper =40 points =20% Final Application Paper =60 points =30% Total points possible =200 points =100% A=180 points and above B= points C= points D= points F=119 - and below Example: Class Participation = 35, Group Presentation = 40, Communication Tactics Discussion = 20, Individual Presentation = 40, Final Application Paper = 55, Total points = 185 = A Students are expected to attend all classes and participate constructively in class discussions and activities. Please note that ALL COURSE GRADES ARE FINAL Learning Assessment: Grades will be based on Class Participation, one Group Presentation, a Final Application Paper, and an Individual Presentation on the Final Paper. The grading is very straight forward. Each student bears the responsibility for his/her scores and final grading outcome. Please do not come to the instructor midway through the course (or later) and state that your company only pays for B s or above.
