1 SAMPSON COMMUNITY COLLEGE CCP HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT ONLINE COURSE ACKNOWLEDGMENT FORM I have attended the dual-enrolled high school student Sampson Community College online course orientation session. I have received handouts for accessing Moodle, SCC (Office 365), and the mandatory online course assessment (MOCA). I understand that all online courses begin on the first day of scheduled classes at Sampson Community College. I understand that I am required to complete a mandatory online course assessment (MOCA) for each online course I take. I understand that my mandatory online course assessment (MOCA) must be completed and submitted via Moodle on or before the 10% point of the semester in order to avoid being dropped from my online course.
2 ACCESSING MOODLE WITH AN SCC-ISSUED USERNAME AND PASSWORD It is necessary to know your SCC-issued username and password in order to access your online, hybrid, and web-assisted courses. Login instructions for Moodle: 1. Access Moodle from the SCC homepage by going to and clicking the Moodle tab. 2. Once you have accessed Moodle, locate the Login section on the left-hand side of the Moodle login page. 3. Type your username in the space provided. Username: First letter of first name + last name (up to 9 characters) + last four digits of your student identification number. Your student identification number is your 7-digit identification number that begins with a zero (0), and can be located on your printed class schedule. Also, you can locate the last 4 digits of your student identification number on the back side of your SCC student ID card. Simply look at the last five numbers on your SCC student ID card, cover the last number which is randomly assigned, and look at the preceding four numbers, which will be used as the last part of your username. Mary L. Johnson, for example, has a student identification number which is Her username is mjohnson3456. Mark Smith, for example, does not have a middle name (which isn t part of one s username anyway) and a student identification number which is His username is msmith6789. Shelly K. Smith-Jones, for example, has a student identification number which is Her username is ssmithjone5678. Note there is no hyphen in her username and the last letter isn t used since there is a maximum last name character usage of nine letters. 4. Type your password in the space provided. Password: Date of birth type the letters bd + two-digit month + two-digit day + the last two numbers of the year you were born. If a student was born on February 21, 1995, for example, he or she would enter bd as the password. IMPORTANT: You will be required to change your password to protect your security in Moodle. You will see a message located on the top righthand side of Moodle once you successfully log in that reads, you are logged in as YOUR STUDENT NAME (Logout). Click your name and you will be taken to a menu that will allow you to change your password.
3 * Refer to the following example. Your username is the first letter of your first name + your last name (up to 9 characters) + the last 4 digits of your student identification number. See the SCC student ID card below. Look at the last five numbers on the back side, and cover the last number as it is a randomly assigned number on your student ID card only. Mary Lacey Johnson s username is mjohnson3456. The numbers used in this example as part of the student s username are Remember, your password is your date of birth the letters bd + two-digit month + two-digit day + the last two numbers of the year you were born. If Mary L. Johnson was born on August 20, 1986, for example, she would enter bd as her password. IMPORTANT: Once you successfully log into Moodle you will be required to change the original password assigned. Your new password must be at least eight characters long and must include at least one number and at least one upper-case letter. If you have problems successfully logging into Moodle, check your name which is located on your registration form to verify that is corresponds with the information you are providing for your Moodle username.
4 ACCESSING OFFICE 365 WITH AN SCC USERNAME AND PASSWORD All currently enrolled SCC students will be issued Office 365 accounts each semester. You need to log into your Office 365 account on the first day of classes and daily in order to keep up to date on important course and/or SCC-related information. Students will use Office 365 accounts to communicate with instructors, classmates, and also receive important information from Financial Aid, Student Services, Student Government Association, and the SCC Library. SCC faculty teaching curriculum college courses, i.e. face-to-face, online, hybrid, web assisted, or NCVIP, will most likely communicate via electronic means to SCC students Office 365 accounts. Faculty may also communicate with students via course announcements or any other appropriate means. Likewise, students taking curriculum courses are strongly encouraged to communicate with their instructors via Office Popular personal providers, such as Hotmail or Yahoo, are less reliable than Office 365 and hence their use is strongly discouraged for SCC-related electronic communication. Most instructors do not open messages from these sources for fear of viruses coming in from unknown users. Choose Google Chrome as your browser if you are going to access Office 365 off campus. You may experience incompatibility issues with other browsers. 2. Access Office 365 from the SCC homepage by going to and clicking the Office 365 tab. 3. Once you have accessed Office 365, a Sign In screen will appear. 4. Type your username in the space provided. Username: First letter of first name + last name (up to 9 characters) + last four digits of your student identification number. MANDATORY ONLINE COURSE ASSESSMENT (MOCA) REQUIREMENT FOR ALL CURRICULUM ONLINE COURSES AT SCC All online courses taught at Sampson Community College have a Mandatory Online Course Assessment (MOCA) for students which must be completed and electronically completed in the student s online (Moodle) course by the ten (10) percent point of the semester. The ten (10) percent point of the semester will be calculated for all online courses beginning on the first day of campus curriculum scheduled classes. The mandatory online course assessment will be required for each online course taken each semester with no exceptions or exemptions. SCC students taking online course that are new to Moodle will be instructed to go to the SCC Moodle Orientation site. A link to the site and an enrollment passkey will be provided with instructions in the online course. Students will be directed to watch the Moodle tutorial videos, which will educate them on the basics of Moodle. Additionally, online course students will be instructed to read their course syllabus in its entirety. The syllabus is a student s course contract. It outlines the important requirements of the course and makes them aware of your responsibilities as an online course student. Students will be encouraged to either print their course syllabus or to have it open before taking their Mandatory Online Course Assessment (MOCA) as they will need it.
