New Zealand Red Cross provides free programmes for schools People Savers and Save-a-Mate and local community-based services: meals on wheels, first aid training, hospital transfer services and refugee resettlement. When disaster strikes Red Cross is often the first humanitarian organisation to reach victims and the last to leave, from civil war in Syria, typhoons in the Philippines to drought in the Marshall Islands and floods in New Zealand. After Typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippines New Zealand Red Cross: Raised NZ 2.16 million in donations from New Zealanders Helped more than 1 million people in affected areas with life-saving water, food and shelter Deployed 17 New Zealand aid workers to Tacloban, Cebu City and Manila Established long-term recovery programmes to support 155,000 families Distributed 160,000 litres of clean water daily along the Samar Coast 2 NEW ZEALAND RED CROSS ANNUAL APPEAL 9 15 MARCH 2015
Helping around the world The number of people affected by natural disasters around the world is rising. In 2013 every day an average of 32,200 were forced to leave their homes. According to the UNHCR, there are almost 51.2 million forcibly displaced people in the world-that represents more than 10 times the population of New Zealand. As a result, disaster response continues to represent the largest portion of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Cross Crescent Societies (IFRC) with assistance to around 30 million people annually, from refugees to victims of natural disasters. The immediate effects include loss of life and damage to property and infrastructure, with the survivors traumatised by the experience, and often left without adequate shelter, food, water and other necessities to sustain life. Rapid action is required to prevent further loss of life. Why your help is needed now March 9 15th, 2015 is Red Cross Annual Appeal Week to raise funds so that Red Cross can be on the spot straight away when there is a disaster, as well as provide ongoing programmes in schools and throughout local communities. We can t do this work without financial support and it s for this reason we need you to lend us a hand. YOUR SCHOOL & NEW ZEALAND RED CROSS 3
New Zealand Red Cross provides the following programmes and services in schools and in your community. Your contribution will help us to continue providing these services. School programmes People Savers Free first aid training for 8 12-year-olds. Save-a-Mate A non-judgemental free programme designed to teach alcohol and drug awareness and first aid in relation to alcohol and other drug emergencies. The programme is designed to teach students how to respond to any adverse alcohol and drug incidents they may experience. First Aid New Zealand Red Cross subsidises first aid training through both the Star and Gateway programmes. 4 NEW ZEALAND RED CROSS ANNUAL APPEAL 9 15 MARCH 2015
In the local community Meals on wheels Since 1951, Red Cross has been making meals on wheels deliveries to people who are confined to home, live alone, are unable to get out to buy food or struggle to cook their own. It s not so much the meal as it is a face coming to the door. They are mostly alone and just looking for someone to talk to, says Doug Paterson, a volunteer meals on wheels driver. Refugee resettlement Around the world tens of millions of people have been forced to flee their homes million are refugees 33.3 million are internally displaced persons (IDPs) 1.1 million are asylum-seekers hoping to achieve refugee status. Only 1% of refugees are permanently resettled. Just 6% return home. Globally, 17 years is the average time some refugees spend in a refugee camp. Each year, through the United Nations quota programme, New Zealand welcomes around 750 refugees, giving them the opportunity to build new lives in a safe place. New Zealand Red Cross how we help former refugees 848 the number of former refugees who have been resettled in New Zealand, in the past year alone 583 the number of New Zealand Red Cross volunteers currently helping former refugees build a safe and comfortable place to call home 134,090 the number of New Zealand Red Cross volunteer hours spent helping former refugees integrate into New Zealand communities. 12 Fundraising made easy online Setting up your school s online fundraising page If you want to collect money from students, their parents and friends etc, you can set up a school fundraising page on Give a little. Online fundraising is quick and easy and great for sponsored activities like fun walks/runs and bike rides. It s also great for staff collections or collecting donations instead of gifts as the link to your personalised page can be ed. Your supporters simply make a credit card donation and are automatically issued with a receipt. You can conduct online fundraising on its own or in tandem with a fundraising event or activity you are planning. It takes only minutes to set up your personalised fundraising page, complete with customised pictures, text and details about your fundraising. Every donation made is recorded on your page (along with any messages of support from your donors) and you can also add in any funds you raise in cash from a fundraising event or activity. To set up your own Red Cross fundraising page, go to Information on how to set up your page Champions_Givealittle-Guide.pdf Tips for using social media to promote your fundraising Social media sites like Facebook and Twitter are brilliant fundraising tools. You can use them to tell your story, explain why you re supporting Red Cross and promote the events and sponsorship pages, share photos and videos with friends, family and colleagues. You can also use social media to ask people for ideas, equipment or other help with your event. Encourage your friends to promote your fundraiser on their own social media profiles. 10 NEW ZEALAND RED CROSS ANNUAL APPEAL 9 15 MARCH 2015
Classroom teaching ideas To find out more about New Zealand Red Cross and the role we have played and continue to play in our communities around New Zealand and overseas, go to YouTube New Zealand Red Cross Strategy After viewing it, use it to start students thinking about: Are there people in need in New Zealand? In what circumstances are they in need? Do you know where Red Cross has helped someone you know? What value does an organisation such as New Zealand Red Cross play in helping our communities? Should every New Zealander contribute to care of people in need in our communities? How could students lend their support to New Zealand Red Cross? How does Red Cross help New Zealanders prepare for the unexpected? Why is it important to have charitable organisations in New Zealand? Is this something we need as a society or should the Government be responsible? YOUR SCHOOL & NEW ZEALAND RED CROSS 11
