2 Faculty Appointment and Promotions Criteria Department of Emergency Medicine - CMS Tenure and Clinical Educator Track Faculty in the Tenure Track are continuing, full-ranked faculty of the University who are engaged in broad scholarly activities, including research, teaching and service, while faculty in the Clinical Educator Track are full-ranked, full-time or core part-time, non-tenured faculty who are primarily engaged in patient care and teaching. Specific descriptions of the Full Academic Ranks (Tenure Track and Clinical Educator Track Faculty) are found in Section 4:1-03 of the University Faculty Bylaws. As it pertains to the Tenure Track, eligible full-time faculty include: A. Full-time members of the University Faculty, defined as those who receive a fixed annual salary from the University for full-time residence and who regularly perform all academic and professional activities under the direct auspices of the University; B. Members of the University Faculty stationed or assigned to affiliated hospitals (institutions) and who receive a salary from the university, whether direct or through the affiliated institution; and C. Members of the University Faculty stationed or assigned to affiliated hospitals (institutions) and who receive a salary from the University which may be partially reimbursed by an affiliate institution. Instructor Tenure Track l. Board eligible or certification in Emergency Medicine (from the American Board of Emergency Medicine, or American Board of Osteopathic Emergency Medicine) or equivalent or registration, license or certification in appropriate health related profession (such as Physician Assistant or Advanced Nurse Practitioner). 2. Letter of recommendation from at least two academic peers at instructor level or higher. Assistant Professor 2. Satisfactory evaluation of performance with record demonstrating promise for an academic career in Emergency Medicine. For appointments or promotions: );> 2 letters of recommendation which may be from University faculty and from individuals with academic appointments with a rank of assistant professor or higher. 2

3 Associate Professor 2. Recognition by peers and by the Department as a skilled clinician and teacher based upon evaluation of performance and lectures, commensurate with promotion to the associate professor level. 3. Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine rank or equivalent for at least 3 years. 4. Academic excellence in two of the following three roles: clinician, teacher, and investigator. Substantive contributions in the third role, when appropriate, are required. 5. Where applicable, acceptable academic and administrative service to the University, Medical School and/or Department, is required. 6. Substantial academic productivity as evidenced by independent research with at least 6 scholarly, peer reviewed publications, or equivalent accomplishments. Professor ).>- 3 letters of recommendation from faculty with academic appointments of associate professor or higher. ~ 3 letters of recommendation from faculty with academic position of associate professor or higher are required. At least two letters should be from academicians 1. Board Certification Emergency Medicine (from the American Board of Emergency 2. Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine rank or equivalent for at least 4 years. 3. Academic excellence in two of the following three roles: clinician, teacher, and investigator. Substantive contributions in the third role, when appropriate, are required. 4. Where applicable, acceptable academic and administrative service to the University, Medical School and/or Department is required. 5. National recognition for excellence in at least one of the following three roles: clinician, teacher, and investigator. National recognition may be evidenced by, but not limited to, presentations of peer reviewed abstracts before organizations with nation-wide memberships, publications in journals with a national circulation, invitations to speak to out-of-state audiences. 6. Superior academic productivity as evidenced by independent research with at least 10 scholarly, peer reviewed publications, or equivalent accomplishments. ) 3 letters of recommendation from full professors with academic appointments r A letter from the candidate's current professional supervisor is desirable. 3

4 Instructor»- 3 letters of recommendation from full professors with full or part-time academic positions. At least two letters should be from academicians outside the University. Clinical Educator Track I. Board eligible or certification in Emergency Medicine (from the American Board of Emergency Medicine, or American Board of Osteopathic Emergency Medicine), or equivalent or registration, license or certification in appropriate health related profession (such as Physician Assistant or Advanced Nurse Practitioner). 2. Letter of recommendation from at least two academic peers at instructor level or higher. Assistant Professor 1. Board eligible* or certification in Emergency Medicine (from the American Board of Emergency Medicine, or American Board of Osteopathic Emergency Medicine) or equivalent. 2. A superior record of training and promise for an exemplary role in academic clinical medicine letters of recommendation, which may be from University faculty and from individuals with academic appointments with the rank of assistant professor or higher. * Board certification is expected within 4 years of initial appointment as Assistant Professor. Reappointment of a board eligible Assistant Professor is contingent upon successful board certification. Associate Professor 2. Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine or equivalent rank for more than three years. 3. Recognition by peers as a superior clinician and teacher. 4. Substantial academic productivity as evidenced by nationally recognized work in clinical, teaching or the research areas. Candidates should have at least completed three publications (chapters, review articles, etc,) and have national presentations. 5. Substantial contributions to the training programs and academic community of the University, Medical School, and/or Department, e.g. committee participation, course direction, etc. For appointment );.>- 3 letters of recommendation from faculty with academic rank of associate professor or higher. For promotion ).> 3 letters of recommendation from faculty with an academic position of associate professor or higher are required. At least two letters should be from academicians outside the Umversity. 4

5 Professor 2. Associate professor rank or equivalent for more than four years. Continued recognition by peers as a superior clinician and teacher. ~. National recognition for excellence as evidenced by, but not limited to, presentations of peer reviewed abstracts for national organizations, publications in peer review journals and presentation to regional, national or international audiences. Author or co-author of at least 5 articles appearing in a peer reviewed journal or book chapters. 4. Substantial contributions to the training programs and academic community of the University, Medical School and/or Emergency Department, e.g. committee participation, course direction, etc. '? 3 letters of recommendation from full professors with academic appointments )> A letter from the candidate's current professional supervisor or department chair is desirable. r 3 letters of recommendation from full professors with academic positions. At least two letters should be from academicians outside the University. Adjunct/Clinical Track Candidates eligible for the Adjunct/Clinical Track provide academic services to the Department on a voluntary or part-time basis. Candidates for "Clinical" prefix are licensed (or eligible for licensure) in Illinois under the Medical Practice Act or registered or licensed in a related health profession. Those ineligible for the "Clinical" prefix, typically nonclinicians, would carry the "Adjunct" prefix. Clinical professional activities do not need to be under the direct auspices of the University or an affiliated institution. Adjunct/Clinical Instructor 1. Board eligible or certification in Emergency Medicine (from the American Board of Emergency Medicine, or American Board of Osteopathic Emergency Medicine), or equivalent or registration, license or certification in appropriate health related profession (such as Physician Assistant or Advanced Nurse Practitioner). 2. Letter of recommendation from at least two academic peers at instructor level or higher. Adjunct/Clinical Assistant Professor 1.
