4 Welcome to the Rehabilitation and Recovery Centre What do we do? We offer a wide range of recovery focused education courses aimed at supporting people in recognising and making the most of their skills and resources, using self management, and to achieve what they want to in life. Courses offer opportunities to gain understanding of mental health challenges, the journey of recovery and the hope that taking control and self management can bring. All our courses are friendly and welcoming and available to those who have lived experiences of mental health challenges, and their carers or family members. We offer a wide range of evidence informed recovery oriented courses varying in content and length which currently cover 5 program areas: Enrolment and individual learning plan Understanding experience of mental health issues, treatment and options. Building your life Developing life skills Physical health and wellbeing Getting involved. All courses are flexible, most sessions are 2 hours, however, there is a break for morning or afternoon tea. All the courses are co-produced and co-delivered by people with a lived experience of mental health challenges (Peer Support Workers) and people with experience by profession. Courses are free. To get started call us on or talk to your health professional to organise a referral. The Teams Peer Support Workers will be conducting interviews and surveys to determine the needs of our community. 5 Enrolment and Individual Learning Plan 1. Enrolment and Individual Learning Plan When you enrol at the Rehabilitation and Recovery Centre you can complete an individual learning plan with the Peer Support Worker. This Plan is designed to help you identify your specific learning goals in relation to your hopes, goals and ambitions for your recovery journey, self management and skills development. At this point you will have the opportunity to book into the courses you have identified and also discuss any learning support needs you have. To arrange enrolment at Rehabilitation and Recovery Centre and an individual learning plan contact the Rehabilitation and Recovery Centre Team on You are welcome to bring a friend, family member or other support with you. There are a number of times you may meet with Peer Support Workers to discuss your Individual Learning Plan: Monday 2nd February pm (this is also our open day). 6 Understanding experience of mental health issues, treatment and options 2. Understanding Psychosis and Schizophrenia Course Overview: This 2 hour introduction is for those interested in gaining an awareness of what the experience of psychosis may mean to you or someone you care about. We will begin to explore issues relating to the process of diagnosis, possible treatment options and what has been reported to be effective. We will also explore personal experiences of psychosis and some of the useful ways people have found to manage their own experiences. Following brief presentation and personal narratives, you will be encouraged and supported to participate in discussions with a facilitator who has an experience of living with psychosis. 7 3. Disclosure to tell or not to tell Course overview If you are wondering how to tell people about your mental health issues this 2 hour session could be for you. It will consider ways of talking to others about what has happened, what to say and when and how to deal with their responses. It will also discuss the option of not telling other people when, why and how this might be an option. Dates and Times at Unara Thursday 20th March 1.00pm -3.00pm. 4. Living with Bipolar Disorder A taster session Course overview: This course is a 2 hour taster for people who have the experience of bipolar disorder or marked mood swings or if you provide support to someone who does. It will allow you to share your own experiences and challenges and begin to explore various ways of coping, including monitoring and managing mood. Dates and Times at Unara Wednesday 9th April 10.00am noon. 5. Understanding Depression Course overview: This 2 hours session will introduce and explore the nature and experience of depression and consider its wide-ranging impact on all aspects of life, including diagnosis and medication. It is also explore alternative practical steps that people have found useful in managing their experiences. There will be a strong focus on personal experiences of depression, with an emphasis on introducing and reflecting upon practical ideas and approaches, You will be invited to share your experiences if you feel comfortable doing this. Understanding Substance Misuse and it s impact on mental health Course overview: This 2 hour session looks at how substance misuse can impact on an individual s mental health, including signs and symptoms and some different types of mental health problems. We will explore experiences of depression, anxiety, psychosis, mood disorders, and personality disorder, moving towards an understanding of how substance misuse can affect some peoples mental health. 8 Building your life 7. Lets talk about Recovery A taster Session Course overview: This 2 hour session provides an introduction to what recovery means and what it may mean for you. It introduces and explores what recovery and wellbeing means for us as individuals, for mental health services and for the wider community. If you found this interesting you may like to go on to the Your Wellness plan course which continues the themes of this taster. There will be short presentations by the facilitators and you will be able to join in lively but relaxed guided discussions and group activities around the themes that come out of the session. Dates and times at Unara: Thursday 6th March 1.00pm 3.00 pm 8. Get Well Stay Well Come and join us to explore ways to better understand your mental health. This 3 week group program explores your personal experience of mental illness and how to use your experience to promote your recovery and wellness. Topics include recovery, how to detect changes in your mental health, dealing with stress, medication information, and wellness tools. Community guest speakers will include an employment agency consultant. Monday 24th March 7th April (3 weeks) 10.00am 12.00noon. 9. Living with Psychosis This is a 7 week program designed for people who experience psychosis. The group explores different ways to understand and gain more control over psychotic experiences in order to improve the quality of your life. In the group we will strengthen your personal strategies for managing stress, support you to set goals for a fulfilling future and improve your ability to reduce the distress caused by psychosis. Sessions are interactive and include interesting You Tube clips to liven up the group!! Monday 3rd February 17th March (7 weeks) 10.00am pm 10. Connect (Social Cognition Training) The Connect program is designed to help you understand and interpret other people s emotions and intentions. The evidence shows that improving these skills can have a positive impact on relationships, functioning in roles (eg at work or as a parent), and the ability to obtain and sustain work. This programs runs weekly for 8 weeks. Monday 3rd February 7th April (8 weeks) 10.00am 12.30pm 8

MI Recovery A Taster and Introduction session Wellways MI recovery is a peer facilitated program for people who are interested in exploring new ways to manage health and plan the pursuit of hopes and dreams. These one day programs give you a taste and introduction to the full 10 week program that covers the theories of recovery, understanding stigma, looking after yourself, planning for recovery, communication and relationship skills, discrimination, rights and advocacy, making the most of the national disability insurance scheme, motivating meaningful and purposeful activity and reviewing recovery aspirations. In Toowoomba morning and afternoon tea will be provided. BYO lunch or buy at Grand Central during the lunch break. Rural areas are fully catered. Introduction to Mindfulness A taster This 2 hour session will introduce you to the concept of mindfulness. There is much evidence that shows using mindfulness strategies helps with depression, anxiety, managing stress and feeling more in control. Opportunity to learn and practice a variety of mindfulness strategies. Tuesday 4th February 10.00am noon. Tuesday 8th April 10.00am noon. 9

10 13. Creative Coping Creative coping is a 20 week skills building programs which will support you to develop control over overwhelming thoughts and emotions, reduce distress, and make the changes you want in your life. This course will use a variety of proven techniques which allow you to cope with painful events, express beliefs and needs, set limits and treat yourself and others respectfully, relate to emotions effectively, and to use mindfulness techniques. Friday 7th February 11th April (10 Weeks, remaining weeks will be offered in Term 2) am 14. Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) Program This program is accessible only by referral, and is specifically for those who have been diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. This program combines a weekly skills training group and individual therapy. Please speak to your treating psychiatrist for more information. Dates and Times: Weekly skills program is Tuesdays 9.30 am noon 15. Mindfulness Integrated Cognitive Therapy (MiCBCT) This 8 session program is for those who experience distress from depression, anxiety and psychosis. You will learn and practice mindfulness, and cognitive behaviour therapy techniques which you may use to be in control of depressive symptoms. Using a combination of these approaches may reduce symptoms, likelihood of relapse of depressive symptoms, and builds assertiveness and strengthens relationships. Dates and Times at Unara. Mind Gym Mind Gym (Cognitive Remediation Therapy) is for you if you want to improve your thinking skills like attention, concentration, memory, problems solving, organising through fun actives and group discussions. People have found that improving these cognitive skills may help you to achieve your goals such as employment, education, living independently, improved daily living, improved self confidence, or improved relationships. Thursday 13th February 10th April (9 weeks. ) 10.00am noon 17. The Thriving Self This Peer Led course will allow learners to participate in discussions, completing a series of Currents of Thought exercises relevant to mental health and well-being: The Thriving Self domain relates to our beliefs and values about our own mental health and wellbeing. Empowers learners in reducing their vulnerability and simultaneously enhancing their personal resilience in the face of personal difficulties. This training resource is designed to initiate a starting point in learners exploring their Currents of Thought relevant to their personal mental health and well-being. Our beliefs in relation to mental health and well-being enables us to examine some of our reactions under stress. To consider aims, beliefs and values in relation to life and work. Work individually or in - partnership in developing/enhancing personal skill levels in:»» Enhancing Personal Resilience (in self and others).»» Emotional Intelligence.»» Critical Thinking. Friday 7th February 11th April (10 Weeks) pm 11

12 Developing life skills 18. Get out and About Group People belonging to Get Out and About Group group will visit various places and resources in the community fortnightly. The group will meet every week. In the first week discussions will occur about what is available in the community to support a person s recovery across all aspects of their life. This could include: a net café, an op shop to look at budget clothes, a library, a court house to see how it works, a park, a theatre, a cinema, a neighbourhood centre, centrelink office etc. The group will plan and problem-solve how to access the chosen community resource. In the second week the group will access the chosen location. The group aims to improve people s practical skills and knowledge of useful community resources and to improve confidence and skills (including social skills and problem solving skills). Dates and Times at The Engine Room Café, Railway Street, Toowoomba. Wednesdays 5th February 26th March (8 weeks) am noon. 19. Keeping Yourself Well All of us can make a positive effort to look after ourselves and feel better physically and mentally. This 3 week course will take us through some of the basic elements of wellbeing: eating well, doing things, meeting people, looking after ourselves, looking after our home and sleeping well. 13 20. Peer Networking Do you want to meet others in a non-threatening environment? Come to these peer-led networking sessions where you can talk to others about recovery, and find out what is available in our local community. 20a. Women s Networking Group Dates and Times at Jilly s Café (upstairs), 181 Margaret Street, Toowoomba: Tuesday 4th February 7th April (10 Weeks) pm 21. Get on Top of Stress Do you feel overwhelmed by stress? Is this impacting on your mental health? This may be the course for you. Learn about the stress cycle, physical indicators of stress, and many ways you can take more control over your stress and thinking. Wednesdays 5th February - 9th March (7 Weeks) am noon 22. Problem Solving Ever had difficulty soling a problem? Then this 2 ½ hours course may interest you. In this session you will learn about the steps you can take to solve a problem. This will give you a tool to help you make decisions on your recovery journey. Thursday 6th February pm 3.00 pm 13

14 23. Managing your Accommodation Are you moving into a new boarding house, unit, or house? Are feeling unsure about how to make the most of this situation? This could be the course for you. Through interactive activities we will look at budgeting, benefits available, citizenship, how to report issues with you accommodation, and being a good neighbour. This is an informal course that will use discussion, short activities and opportunities for questions. Thursday 27th March 12.30pm 3.00pm 24. Sense of Self This program is facilitated by the Mental Illness Fellowship Queensland (MIFQ). This program is specifically aimed at people who are moving from hospital into the community and those who are focused on developing a better sense of who they are. The programs consists of 7 modules which cover sense of self, labelling and stigma, self acceptance, motivation and goal setting, being kind to yourself, self esteem, assertiveness. Mental Health First Aid Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) courses teach mental health knowledge and skills which enable participants to assist someone experiencing difficulty with the symptoms of mental illness. This 2 day peer facilitated course is designed to give workers without clinical training some skills to help someone developing a mental health problem or in a mental health crisis situation. The philosophy behind the course is that mental health crises, such as suicidal and self-harming actions, may be avoided through early intervention with people developing mental disorders. If crises do arise, then members of the public can take action to reduce the harms that could result The program covers the following: Introduction to common mental illnesses: depression, anxiety disorders, psychotic disorders and substance abuse disorders Crisis first aid skills for suicidal behaviour, acute stress reaction, panic attacks, acute psychotic episode, drug overdose Ongoing first aid skills for all common mental illnesses What are the warning signs How to address difficult situations How and where to get the right help Dates and times at Millmerran, venue to be announced: Monday 8th and Tuesday 9th April 9.00am 4.00pm Please contact for more information 14
