This Educators Guide contains important details to help you prepare for and make the most of your visit. 3 Preschool Workshop Information About: Learning is fun for preschoolers at the History Center! Come explore a little history through stories, songs, crafts and other age-appropriate activities. Led by early childhood educators, programs are designed for preschool children ages 3-5. Advanced registration is required. Make a day of it with a visit through our kid-friendly exhibits. End with a picnic lunch in our neighboring waterfront park. Play fountains and two playgrounds are sure to keep the little ones busy! Workshop Length Each program lasts one hour and primarily takes place in our museum classroom. Please plan additional time for exploration of our interactive and child-friendly galleries, lunch, playground fun, and shopping in the museum store, if desired. School Admission Rate CHOOSE A PROGRAM THEME DIG THIS! JUNIOR ARCHAEOLOGISTS Dig in to Florida s past with archaeology adventures! Learn about Florida s first people while digging up very tasty artifacts as you unearth a chocolate chip cookie. Student groups (min. 10/max. 30) Teachers/chaperones (1 per 5 students) Additional adults $8/student Free $4 each BIG MOVERS Tampa s planes, trains, and ships abound here at the museum. See how many you can spy in our galleries! Games, songs, and crafts round out the revelry! Payment Your group s $50 deposit is due upon registration. The remaining balance is due on the day of your field trip, and must be paid in one lump sum. Cash, credit cards and checks are accepted. Reservations Preschool Workshop reservations must be made at least four weeks in advance. A PIRATE S LIFE FOR ME! Ahoy, mateys! Listen to sea chanteys as you play pirate games, hear stories of adventures in Florida s waters, and create your own crafty treasure! PIONEER LIFE Experience a day in the life of a Florida pioneer boy or girl. Dress up in pioneer clothes in our cabin, play exciting games from days past, and even make butter the old fashioned way! Cancellations/Changes To cancel or make changes to your reservation, call no later than ten business days prior to your visit. -3-

4 Field Trip Information Buses/Parking All official school vehicles (Buses, vans, mini-buses, etc.) park for free. Any parents or teachers driving separately may purchase discounted parking tokens for $3 at the front desk. Parking for personal vehicles is available in the St. Pete Times Forum East Lot next to the History Center. This lot is owned by the St. Pete Times Forum. Picnic Amenities School groups may enjoy a picnic lunch in Cotanchobee Park, adjacent to the History Center. Situated on Tampa s Riverwalk, the park has an open green space, picnic tables, benches, restrooms, two playgrounds, as well asfountains for children to play in. Museum Etiquette Please note: the Columbia Cafe can not accommodate school groups inside the Cafe or on their outdoor patio. Food, drinks (including water bottles), gum and candy are prohibited inside the museum. Backpacks, lunch boxes, large purses and bags are not allowed in the galleries. Complimentary lockers are available upon request. No flash photography, please. Over time, camera flashes can damage artifacts. Only touch objects when invited to do so. The natural oil on hands can damage artifacts. Students must remain with chaperones at all times. Museum Store Our store offers a wide and unique selection of fun and educational items. Chaperones should feel free to browse the store before or after the preschool program. -4-

5 Overview of Exhibits SECOND FLOOR The second floor was specifically designed with kids in mind. Children are encouraged to touch, listen, sing along, and ride along as they explore the interactive exhibits. * Cowmen & Crackers showcases Florida s cattle ranching history, putting viewers in the middle of an actual cattle drive as they ride atop a saddle (6-min. film). * A Land Remembered Designed for young children, this replica Cracker cabin is filled with dress-up clothes and other hands-on objects. * Port City tells the story of Tampa s ports with a whimsical 6-min. film geared toward younger children and played inside an actual shipping container-turned-theater. * Citrus Store is a replica of the many road-side stands selling strawberries, citrus, and other touristfriendly wares. Children may enter and decide what they d like to buy or sell. -5-

A minimum of one adult must accompany every five students. Prepare nametags for all students and chaperones. The Day of your Visit Be sure students have nametags. Bring the remainder of your payment in one lump sum with this form to Visitor Services in the atrium on the first level of the museum to check in. We accept cash, credit cards, and checks. Arrive 5-10 minutes before your scheduled program time. Call the History Center at (press 0 for Visitor Services) if your group is running more than 10 minutes late. Store lunches and coolers on the GROUND LEVEL of the museum, underneath the entry staircase. Students and chaperones may NOT bring lunch boxes, backpacks, large bags or drinks (including water bottles) into the galleries. Children may be brought up to the atrium by the elevator located on the ground level or led carefully up the entry staircase. -8-
