1 ALLIED HEALTH PROGRAMS CEI 400--Pharmacy Technician Certification (Exam Preparation) This comprehensive 50 hour course will prepare students to enter the pharmacy field and take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board s PTCB exam. Technician s work in hospitals, home infusion pharmacies, community pharmacies and other health care settings working under the supervision of a registered pharmacist. Course content includes medical terminology specific to the pharmacy, reading and interpreting prescriptions and defining drugs by generic and brand names. Students will learn dosage calculations, I.V. flow rates, drug compounding, dose conversions, dispensing of prescriptions, inventory control and billing and reimbursement. Textbooks and course completion certificate are included in the cost of the course. Course fee: $1,399. Pre-requisites: 18 years of age and high school completion or G.E.D. This 96- hour training program combines theory and practical instruction over 32 sessions, plus two optional review sessions to help students prepare for their CMAA National Certification exam. Course instruction includes telephone skills and use of computer programs, appointment scheduling, medical record handling, filing, billing, insurance coding, transcription and general office etiquette. CEI 591--Medical Coding Professional Medical coding professionals keep records, calculate patient charges, review files and determine codes for physician procedures and diagnosis - using ICD-9 and CPT-4 coding protocols - for third party billing purposes. This course is 80 hours of classroom instruction, including medical terminology, and CPT and ICD-9 guidelines and management. Students who complete this course could be qualified to sit for the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) - Certified Professional Coder Exam (CPC or CPC-H - Apprentice); the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) Certified Coding Associate (CCA) exam; and/or other National Certification Exams. Successful completion of this course prepares students for the Certified Electronic Health Records Specialist (CEHRS) National Certification. Prior to registering for the program, students must successfully complete the Chesapeake College placement exam for reading comprehension and arithmetic with a proficiency score of 45 for each. In addition, students must successfully complete the online Medical Terminology course (course number: CEI 541) and online Human Anatomy & Physiology (course number: CEG 287) prior to registration. For more information or to register go to: CEI 300--EKG Technician EKG Technicians are responsible for performing electrocardiogram tests in order to monitor and record electrical impulses transmitted by the heart. This comprehensive 50 hour EKG Technician Certification Program prepares students to function as EKG Technicians and to take the American Society of Phlebotomy Technician (ASPT) Electrocardiograph (EKG) Technician exam in addition to other National Certification Exams. This course will include important practice and background information on anatomy of the heart and physiology, medical disease processes, medical terminology, medical ethics, legal aspects of patient contact, the Holter monitor, electrocardiography and echocardiography. It is suggested that students attend a Health Career Orientation Session prior to registering for this course. For more course details, go to: Students will have online access for six months. This course includes all textbooks. Course Fee: $1,299. Certified Nursing Assistant Certified Nursing Assistants provide basic patient care under direction of a Registered Nurse. They assist patients in hospitals and physician s offices, residents in nursing homes, clients in home care situations and Assisted Living facilities with their activities of daily living such as feed, bathe, dress, groom, toilet or move patients, or change linens. Anyone wishing to be employed as a nursing assistant in Maryland must complete a nursing assistant course approved by the Maryland Board of Nursing. This course is designed to instruct students on how to function in a healthcare environment utilizing professional standards of conduct and is approved by the Maryland Board of Nursing. Course content also includes CPR for Healthcare Providers. Class size is limited to eight students. A favorable criminal background check and drug screening are required for completion of the nursing assistant program. Updated immunizations are strongly encouraged. PERFECT ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY. Upon accomplishing all prerequisites, a registration form with an Approval Verification form will be ed to you. Tuition: In-county $100, Out-of-county $105, Out-of-State $110. Course fee: $1120. 4 Career Planning for CNA/GNAs This pre-requisite course provides the opportunity for students to become acquainted with the expectations of classroom and clinical training as well as the regulations in the healthcare industry regarding the importance of confidentiality as noted in the Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act. It also provides application information for certification from the Maryland Board of Nursing, and applications for drug testing and a criminal background check. Tuition: Incounty $10, Out-of-county $15, Out-of-State $20. Course fee: $145. After July 1, 2012, Tuition: In-county $10, Out-of-county $15, Out-of-State $20. Course fee: $165. For additional information, please contact Karen Bailor at kbailor@chesapeake.edu or , ext Dental Assistant The Dental Assisting Program consists of three courses: Basic Dental Assisting, Oral Radiography Techniques, and Oral Radiography Clinical which includes 75 hours in the classroom and 12 hours at a clinical site. Students need to register for all three courses to complete the program. Successful completion of this program, allows graduates to take either the DANB Radiation Health and Safety Exam or the Maryland State Board of Dental Examiners Intraoral Radiology Exam administered by DANB. Passing the exam will give the holder the required license needed to be employed as a Dental Radiation Technologist. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, job prospects should be excellent. Dentists are expected to hire more dental assistants to perform routine tasks so dentists may devote their time to more complex procedures. Students need to score a minimum of 75 on the College s Reading Comprehension placement test, complete an application to the program and provide a copy of their high school diploma or G.E.D. to Karen Bailor at P.O. For additional information, please contact Karen Bailor at kbailor@chesapeake.edu or , ext Certified Personal Fitness Fitness Trainers work with individuals and groups to lead, instruct and motivate them in exercise activities, including cardiovascular exercise, strength training, and stretching. For most fitness workers, certification is critical. Many personal training jobs are part-time but many workers increase their hours by working at several facilities or at clients homes. Employment is expected to grow much faster than the average and job prospects are expected to be good. Job opportunities can be found in outpatient rehabilitation centers, fitness centers, health clubs, spas, medical & athletic equipment sales and sports related jobs Chesapeake College offer this fitness training program in partnership with the World Instructor Training Schools (W.I.T.S.), one of the major certifying bodies in the country which provides comprehensive practical training and internship components, and is also an approved provider of continuing education by the American Occupational Therapy association, The BOC for athletic trainers, as well as the IACET and the American Council on Education for Fitness Professionals. This course is taught over a five-week period for better retention and skill competency. The National Exam is held on the sixth week. The course is a 60-hour program
5 and is comprised of 15 hours lecture, 15 hours practical training and a 30-hour internship. Topics include: biomechanics, exercise physiology, fitness testing, equipment usage and health assessment. Textbook is required - not included in the course fee. Older Adult Fitness Certification This 24-hour certification class is for health and fitness professionals who want to know how to safely and effectively serve this special clientele, to assess fitness levels, design fitness programs, and provide motivating exercise instruction for older adults. It is an intermediate level course for students with experience or education in fitness training. Testing is done in the last session. Adult CPR and a 20-hour internship are required for the certification to be issued. Student Workbook and Study Guide are included at no charge. Traditional Reiki I Certification Reiki is a gentle touch therapy that accesses universal life energy to promote healing on all levels: physical, emotional, mental and spiritual, and does not interfere with conventional medical treatment or alternative therapies. Anyone can learn Reiki regardless of age or health condition. Reiki is a useful tool for people already in health care professions or care-giving situations. This is a traditional course that certifies the student as a practitioner in the USUI School of Natural Healing. Students experience benefits from taking this course with the extended access of instruction as well as the practice of working on others over the six week period of the course. All students pay $170 course fee. Traditional Reiki II Certification This course is the advanced certification study of Reiki techniques in the Usui Shiki Ryoho (Usui School of Natural Healing). It guides the student to a whole new level of practice with Reiki. As Reiki Certification level I trains the student to work mostly on the physical level, Reiki II expands one s practice to balancing the more subtle layers of energy both on the physical body and distant healing. Anyone can learn these techniques which are particularly useful for medical challenges for oneself or loved ones (human or animal), and/or spiritual pathwork. Professionals in health care fields may also find Reiki useful as an additional service. Textbook is available at the College Bookstore. Tuition: In-county $5, Out-of-county $10, Out-of-State $15. All students pay $220 course fee.
6 Autism Continuing Education The following courses are provided for professionals such as teachers, child care workers, therapists, and counselors, working with individuals affected by autism as well as for parents of children affected by the Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Continuing education credit will be available for Licensed Counselors and Therapists, Psychologists, Social Workers and Child Care Workers. Social Work: Chesapeake College is a sponsor authorized by the Board of Social Work Examiners and participants will be awarded a certificate for 6 contact hours (per course) of Category I upon the completion of the programs. Psychology: A certificate for 6 hours (per course) of Category A will be awarded upon completion of these programs. Licensed Counselors and Therapists: A certificate for 6 continuing education units (per course) will be awarded upon the successful completion of these programs. Child Care Providers: Upon successful completion of each course, Child Care Providers will receive 6 Hours of Core of Knowledge training (per course) in the category of Special Needs. UNDERSTANDING AUTISM Students will gain an understanding of autism and its effects on the individual, the family, the home setting as well as the educational and career setting. This course will focus upon the disabilities on the Autism Spectrum, information about the special education process and educational programming for those with autism. This course will also cover upcoming developments at the local, state and national levels regarding the laws, therapy, research and education for people with autism. Tuition: In-county $5, Out-of-county $10, Out-of-State $15. All students pay $80 course fee. COMMUNICATION SKILLS FOR AUTISM This course is designed for anyone who has contact with individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and who desires to communicate more effectively. The various communication methods including those involving assistive technology will be examined. Participants will make and take visual communication systems for schedules, routines and directives. Tuition: Incounty $5, Out-of-county $10, Out-of-State $15. All students pay $80 course fee. MEETING THE SOCIAL & SENSORY NEEDS OF AUTISM This course provides participants with an insight into social interaction with individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) throughout various community fields. Often, there are subtle, yet sensitive differences in these interactions versus how one would interact and respond to an individual without ASD. Participants will learn how sensory integration provides input that individuals with autism often cannot receive through social interactions. Illustrations will be provided on how sensory interaction can provide an outlet for calming, focus and an outlet for feelings that cannot often be shared verbally. Quick, easy and inexpensive sensory materials which can work in a variety of settings will be shared and made. Tuition: In-county $5, Out-ofcounty $10, Out-of-State $15. All students pay $80 course fee. AUTISM: BEHAVIOR AS A FORM OF COMMUNICATION This course will provide participants with a better understanding of behaviors exhibited by those on the Autism Spectrum. Participants will be able to identify a specific behavior and its use, as
7 well as, data to determine the cause and replacement behavior. Participants will learn to track their interventions to determine success. Tracking and assessment materials will be provided. The determination of reinforcements for individuals will be presented and tracking will be illustrated. In-depth discussions will stimulate insight into behaviors experienced by participants. Tuition: In-county $5, Out-of-county $10, Out-of-State $15. All students pay $80 course fee. Case Manager / Delegate Nurse This training is required by the Maryland Board of Nursing for Case Managers and Delegating Nurses working with assisted living facilities. It focuses upon the role of the Case Manager Delegate Nurse in relationship to the manager, staff and residents of assisted living facilities and also trains the RN to teach the Medication Technician for Assisted Living course.
