3 Introdution When the use of eletri urrent started, the need for measurement transformers began. In this atalogue we will refer to urrent transformers. The servies whih a transformer must offer are: To insulate and to separate iruits and measuring/protetion equipment et in high voltage lines To prevent disturbanes generated by transmitting high urrents To redue short iruit urrents to admissible levels in sensitive measurement and protetion equipment To obtain proportional urrents (in a pre-determined range at least) up to whih measurements and heks are to be made in order to transmit them to the appropriate equipment Experiene shown through a poor hoie or installation of measurement/ protetion transformers may reate situations where the installation does not operate properly as well as personnel and installation safety not being able to be guaranteed during ritial periods Seletion For the orret seletion of measurement transformer (measurement or protetion) the following must be known: The appliation for whih it is intended (measurement or protetion) Features of the operating environment, or onditions of use (indoors or outdoors, maximum operating temperature, et.) The features of the line where it will be installed: Size of ables or fl at strip Measurement margins of the measured urrent (maximum and minimum urrent) Overload (range and time) System voltage (low, medium or high voltage) Short iruit urrent System frequeny Features of the assoiated instrument or relay (auray, nominal urrent, onsumption, et.) Distane between the transformer and the instrument, plus the able diameter used for onnetion The power of a transformer This is an important magnitude. In the transformer, the primary urrent has to indue the power required in the seondary to transmit the seondary urrent to the measurement equipment. Indued power has to be equal to or higher than losses in the line plus onsumption of the measurement equipment itself. Losses in the line, P L : This is the power lost through heating up due to the passage of urrent through the resistane R L in the ables in the transformer s seondary iruit. Fators to be taken into aount: Seondary urrent. P L = R L I 2 Cable diameter. R L is inversely proportional to the square of the diameter Cable length. R L is proportional to the length of abling (there and bak) Power: The nominal apparent power (V ) with a speifi ed power fator whih the urrent transformer supplies to the seondary urrent with the assigned urrent when it is onneted to its nominal load, S(V ) = Z (I sn ) 2 ording to Standards for apparent power higher than or equal to 5 V, the power fator is 0.8 indutive. For lower apparent powers the power fator isonsidered one. M7-3

5 uray of a transformer The type of error produed in a transformer is established by I.E.C In measurement transformers for 25 % and 100 % of nominal power. In protetion transformers only 100 % of nominal power. Error Limits. 6 The transformer when saturated urrent transformer is saturated when its urrent primary or load are above its nominal values. The linearity of the urrent transformation between primary and seondary dereases, so that error inreases. The saturation of the transformer is inversely proportional to the load (fi g. 6). The differene between measurement and protetion urrent transformers is its behaviour with the overload whih ours in the primary. Those used for measurement are saturated when there is an overload in order not to damage the equipment in the seondary Protetion transformers are not saturated until there is a high urrent. lass 5P15 protetion transformer indiates that it has an auray error of ± 1% and it does not beome saturated until 15 times the nominal urrent passes through the primary. In measurement transformers, the SFETY FCTOR, Fs parameter indiates how large the primary urrent an be whih the transformer is apable of transferring to measuring equipment. So that they an add urrents from several transformers and the output is proportional to the same, it is neessary that the transformer ratio is the same. On request, adding transformers may be supplied for inputs whih do not have the same ratio.
