ED/BAS/STV/2007/PI/4 Kingdom of Bahrain Ministry of Education Directorate for Technical and Vocational Education BAHRAIN-UNESCO PROJECT IN SUPPORT OF DEVELOPMENT OF CURRICULA FOR NEW DISCIPLINES SECONDARY TECHNICAL EDUCATION CERTIFICATE IN COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY CURRICULUM, COURSE SPECIFICATIONS AND TECHNICAL TEACHING MATERIAL June 2007
PREFACE UNESCO, as the lead Agency in the Education For All (EFA) and a promoter of international co-operation through the sharing of sound and best practice and available knowledge and experience, has initiated the production of a digital library of TVET curricula and teaching material for the purpose of disseminating them widely. Under a UNESCO-Nigeria project the Section for Science, Technical and Vocational Education produced the first CD-ROM entitled Revised Curricula for Technical Colleges and Polytechnics in October 2003 and a second edition was produced in April 2006 with updated curricula for 57 disciplines in various fields. Many technical and vocational education institutions around the world have had access to the curricula and greatly befitted from them. As part of a UNESCO-Bahrain project Support for the Development of New Technical Disciplines in Bahrain Secondary Technical Education initiated in 2005 and completed in 2007 new curricula and teaching material were developed for three new disciplines in Printing Technology, Computer Technology and Plant Maintenance with the participation of UNESCO s international consultants and Bahraini national technical teachers. All the materials produced, nearly 150 textbooks, utilised e-learning and were loaded on the server of the Shaikh Khalifa Institute of Technology for easy access by all student and teachers in Bahrain. With a view to sharing the new curricula and teaching material with other technical and vocational schools, educators and curriculum development specialists throughout the world the Ministry of Education in the Kingdom of Bahrain who sponsored and supported this work has kindly agreed with UNESCO to add the new material for the three disciplines to UNESCO TVET Digital Library. Countries with similar socio-economic situation as Bahrain are encouraged to use the new curricula, with appropriate adaptations, to prepare skilled and flexible workforces that can contribute to the economic development of their communities. The curricula and technical teaching material for each of the three disciplines were compiled on separate CD-ROMs for easy use. This CD- ROM contains the curricula and technical teaching material for Computer Technology only. The support of the Ministry of Education in the Kingdom of Bahrain for this project is gratefully acknowledged. Section for Science, Technical and Vocational Education UNESCO October

GENERAL INFORMATION 1.0 CERTIFICATION AND TITLE OF THE PROGRAMME: 1.1 The title of the programme will be: Computer Technology 1.2 The certificate awarded will be called: Secondary Technical Education Certificate in Computer Technology 2.0 AIMS AND OBJECTIVES 2.1 Graduates will have established a solid academic and practical foundation in the field of information technology. This foundation is aimed to prepare graduates to embark on further education in the field or to gain employment within the information technology support industry. 2.2 On successfully completing the programme, students will be able to: Identify the main hardware components of a computer Understand the basic architecture operating principles of a computer Apply faultfinding skills in diagnosis and rectification of common computer hardware issues Understand the principles of Operating Systems Identify the main components of computer networks Setup, maintain, and troubleshoot small computer networks Specify, design, and evaluate a prototype web site Demonstrate competence in hand-coding a mark-up language Create a web-based prototype using an industry standard authoring application 4
3. 0 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS 3.1 Intermediate Qualification with an average of 70% or above or the equivalent. 3.2 Satisfactory English and Mathematics skills (with no failures in these subjects) 4.0 CURRICULUM STRUCTURE 4.1 The structure of the Computer Technology programme consists of six semesters spread over three years of study. The duration of each semester is 15 weeks (excluding registration and examinations). 4.2 The course consists of a programme of modules, which fall into the following categories: Core Subjects that are common with all courses in Secondary Technical Education and represents 15% of the programme Supportive Subjects designed to provide underpinning knowledge for the technical subjects, representing 15% Technical Subjects specific to Computer Technology, representing 70% 4.4 Student learning is promoted using a competence based approach and takes place in classrooms, workshops and laboratories, as appropriate. Practical activities and theory are fully integrated wherever possible. 4.5 Students will receive 5 weeks of supervised industrial training in the form of a work placement during the 5 th semester. This is an essential part of the programme and will contribute towards the final award. 4.6 A further essential part of the programme is the completion of a project during the final semester. This is designed to provide students with the opportunity to integrate all the knowledge and skills they have gained during the programme and to promote a better understanding of the occupational discipline. 5
5.0 ASSESSMENT 5.1 Each modular subject will be assessed by a combination of continuous in-course assessment and examinations at the end of each semester. The in-course assessment will vary according to the subject but will include assignments, practical tests, short knowledge tests and projects. Precise details of this are given at the end of each module specification. 6.0 CONDITONS FOR THE AWARD 6.1 The award of Secondary Technical Education Certificate in Computer Technology will be issued to those candidates who have successfully completed all prescribed in-course assessment, including the project, have satisfactorily completed a period of work placement and have been successful in all examinations at the end of each semester. 7.0 GUIDANCE NOTES FOR PROGRAMME TEACHERS 7.1 This new course in Computer Technology is a modular programme. Each module specification has specific learning outcomes for the theory and practical content. These outcomes are written in behavioural output terms, which specify clearly what the student will be able to do after completing each outcome successfully. This requires a different approach by the teacher where the emphasis is more on the student learning, as opposed to the teacher teaching. The teacher will be required to use methods that will ensure that the student will be able to perform what is specified in the learning outcome. These methods will include practical activities and participation on the part of the student during the learning process. 7.2 Theory and practical work should be integrated wherever possible and should not be taught separately in isolation. There will be instances where theory subjects will be taught separately in a classroom but there should always be close coordination between the course teaching team to ensure that the subjects are closely related to each other and the knowledge gained in the classroom supports the practical work in workshops and laboratories. 6
