1 Boise State University Dean, The College of Business and Economics Boise State University announces the search for Dean of the College of Business and Economics (COBE). The largest public university in Idaho, Boise State ( is a metropolitan research university located in the state s capital city, which is a hub for technology and science start-ups. 2 Situated at the base of the Rocky Mountains, Boise State enrolls more than 20,000 students in undergraduate, graduate, doctoral, and technical programs in six colleges: Arts and Sciences; Business and Economics; Education; Engineering; Health Sciences; and Social Sciences and Public Affairs. The university is dedicated to research, innovation and student experiences that drive economic development. COBE enrolls more than 3,100 undergraduate and 300 graduate students who are taught by 54 tenured or tenure-track faculty members. Undergraduate degrees offered are: Accountancy, Economics, Finance, Information Technology, International Business, Management, Marketing and Supply Chain Management Graduate degrees include: separate MBA degrees focused on Career Starters, Professionals, and Executives; M.S. degrees in Accountancy and Accountancy with a Taxation Emphasis; and a concurrent J.D. and M.S.A.T in partnership with the University of Idaho College of Law. The college serves the region via business-support centers which include: the Small Business Development Center; TechHelp; Center for Creativity and Innovation; The Business Research and Economic Development (BRED) Center, and Center for Entrepreneurship. It also works closely with the TecCenter, the Greenhouse (Idaho Incubator), and the Idaho Council for Economic Education. Among the five percent of business schools with AACSB accreditation, COBE is one of a small group of schools worldwide with AACSB accreditation for both the business school and the accountancy program. 4 Attributes The Search Advisory Committee seeks dynamic candidates with a Doctorate in a business (or closely related) discipline and a record of high-quality research, or combination of education and prior business experience commensurate with leading a dynamic academic enterprise. Other desired attributes include: Experience in leading faculty/staff to develop and implement a meaningful strategic plan; Ability to bridge academic and business cultures, communicate persuasively with internal and external stakeholders (donors, business leaders, legislators and others); Proven commitment to diversity and to strategies that incorporate the valuable contributions that come from students, faculty, and staff from all backgrounds; Ability to expand COBE s global impact, support student study-abroad and international faculty exchange programs, and advance a campus environment where students from around the world are welcomed and supported; Proven ability to raise funds from public and private sources; Ability to pursue new delivery systems for instruction in keeping with COBE s growing stature as a 21 st century business school serving as a national model. Opportunities and Challenges The successful candidate in this national search will lead a college with new state-of-the art facilities, outstanding faculty, and a reputation for attracting and retaining premier students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Among opportunities awaiting the Dean: Lead faculty and staff in defining a vision and strategic plan for COBE that will identify new entrepreneurial programs that include measures of progress as well as support strategies in order to further promote a college-wide climate of excellence. Grow COBE s business and economics research culture, build cross-disciplinary initiatives with other schools and colleges at Boise State, including those with STEM focus, and promote the value of business-related research throughout the city and region. Support faculty teaching and scholarship by adopting a flexible workload policy, encouraging applied learning, and engaging business leaders as guest lecturers/student mentors. Implement strategies to increase revenue streams, generate consistent new funding sources, and grow undergraduate and graduate scholarships, fellowships and assistantships. 4

5 Emphasize external engagement with business and industry to build support for academic chairs and professorships, professional programs, scholarships and fellowships, and the COBE endowment. Grow COBE s reputation as the go-to source for business and industry to hire well qualified graduates, partner with innovative faculty, and transfer emerging technologies from the classroom to the workplace. Be a dynamic, engaging, and effective spokesperson who advocates for the link between education and economic development and strengthens the ties between business and higher education in Boise and the region.
