Two core courses are offered each fall, winter, and spring quarter; we recommended students begin with Introduction to the U.S. Health Care System. Required Courses Introduction to the U.S. Health Care System Dig beyond the headlines and discover how the U.S. health care system really works to deliver quality care in a variety of settings. This course provides an overview of the health care system, including its key components (public, private, regulatory, and health care professionals); how health care is delivered and paid for; the consumer s perspective; and emerging issues and trends (including e-medicine, quality measurement, patient safety, and technology). Students are expected to analyze the impact of events and political decisions on the health care system from both a provider and consumer point of view. Introduction to Health Care Financial Management This survey course introduces health care accounting and finance to nonfinancial students. Topics covered include: the financial structure of health care organizations and their operating environment; the use of accounting/financial information in investor-owned and not-for-profit organizations; financial accounting and reporting requirements; cost and managerial accounting; private and public third-party payment; accounts receivable management, budgeting, and resource allocation. Principles of Health Organization Management & Leadership Health care organization managers face organizational changes; increased regulatory/environmental pressures; patient care quality/safety monitoring; and technology changes that impact patient care. This course provides a skills toolkit to meet these challenges by introducing fundamentals of health care management and organizational dynamics. Topics covered are: the structure and function of health care organizations; the manager s role; managerial skills of communication, problem-solving, decision-making, team building, and using power and inf luence. Additional subjects include staffing, workforce planning, and defining and measuring organizational performance. Students should be able to demonstrate effective group management and analyze typical health care management scenarios.
3 Strategy & Marketing for Health Organizations This overview course presents students with tools and concepts relevant to strategy and marketing in health care. Strategic planning topics include mission/vision assessment; SWOT analysis; and scenario/strategic planning processes. Marketing concepts covered include market analysis and positioning; marketing communications; sales management; and branding from the hospital/health system, physician/provider, and health plan perspectives. Fundamentals of Health Law & Compliance (34 hours of MCLE credit available) Because our health care systems operate under an array of constantly changing laws, it s essential you stay current on these updates. This course presents fundamental legal structures that affect U.S. health care. Presented by expert health lawyers, topics include the history and development of the present health care industry; government reimbursement systems such as Medicare and Medicaid; fraud and abuse; state licensure, Medicare and Medicaid participation requirements; litigation involving health care organizations; the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act; consent and advance directives; medical staff law; the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA); and health care organizations as business entities. Prerequisite: Introduction to the U.S. Health Care System. Quality Improvement, Performance Management & Information Technology in Health Care Organizations Health care organizations are under increasing scrutiny as a result of recent reports revealing widespread medical errors, increased clerical and staff turnover due to employee dissatisfaction in the workplace, and poor financial performance measures. This course introduces the student to the variety of tools and programs available to help provide the best care possible in the most effectively run organization. Students will learn the fundamentals of quality management and the manager s role; consumerism and customer service; health care performance improvement in complex systems, information systems, and technology; use of data; quality improvement tools and methods; issues in implementation of quality management programs; and the role of cross functional teams, regulation, and environmental expectations. Student s knowledge of these topics are highly desirable to health care organizations, which are implementing methods to improve information and performance management on an ongoing basis. 4 Frequently Asked Questions 1. Why should I pursue a Certificate in Health Care Management & Leadership? This certificate program is the ideal way for you to gain practical skills to advance your career in health care. The relevant academic background can give you the tools to improve management skills, fill in gaps in knowledge, and provide tangible academic proof to employers that you have current, relevant understanding of issues in the health care field. 2. How do I enroll? Just submit your application and include your nonrefundable application fee of $175 fee. You must include proof of your undergraduate degree with your application. Candidates without a degree may petition for enrollment based on work experience; for details call UCLA Extension: (310) When should I apply for the certificate program? You can submit your application at any time before you start your courses, but you must submit your application before starting your third course in the sequence. 4. May I take courses without being enrolled in the certificate program? Any courses may be taken individually, but unless you have been accepted into the certificate program, should the curriculum or other requirements change, you may have to take additional courses. Acceptance into the certificate program locks in your requirements for the next four years and also gives you advance notice of classes; networking opportunities; affiliation with the UCLA Department of Health Services Alumni Association; and invitations to additional colloquiums through the Healthcare Collaborative. 5. May I skip a quarter in the certificate program without penalty? Yes; you have up to four years to complete your certificate. 6. How long will it take to complete the program? The length of time varies with the number of courses you take per quarter. This seven-course program may be completed in as little as a year; however, you have up to three years to complete the program. 7. How much will should I budget for my certificate? Students pay for each course as they enroll each quarter. Consult the current catalog for the fee for each individual course. To estimate the program s total cost, add up the fees for all the courses needed to complete the program, as well as the costs for textbooks, parking, and candidacy fee. 8. May I take a course on a pass/not passed basis? Students enrolled in the certificate program may not take courses pass/not pass. Certificate candidates must receive a grade of C or better to pass; those receiving a C- or less will be required to retake the course or consult with the Program Advisor to find a suitable substitute. Students who are not certificate candidates or who do not intend to pursue the program may take courses pass/not pass. 9. May I take a course that isn t listed as part of the program requirements and apply it towards my certificate? Please see the section under Electives. 10. I ve taken courses at an accredited U.S. college elsewhere; may I transfer courses toward my certificate at UCLA Extension? One course may be transferred to apply towards your certificate provided it was completed within the past 2 years, was from an accredited institution and was comparable in course content and unit value. Contact your Program Advisor for evaluation. 11. Is there job placement associated with your certificate program? Although UCLA Extension does not directly provide job placement services, the certificate program provides opportunities for you to network with instructors and other working professionals in health-related fields. Upon certificate completion, you may join the Health Services Alumni Association to network and gain access to their online job bulletin. In addition, many professional organizations and companies look upon completion of a UCLA Extension certificate program as a strong positive factor for promotion and hiring candidates. 12. What benefits might my employers see in my certificate? The completion of your certificate not only provides you with up-to-date information and skills relevant to the health care industry, but also demonstrates your focus on lifelong learning a key emerging competency of the health care management field. 13. Do certificate program courses apply toward an undergraduate or graduate degree? Courses may be transferable, but this is up to the institution. Should you wish to transfer a course, please check directly with that institution.
