In 2001, the College of Law moved to a new campus in downtown Ontario, California.
135 MASTER PLAN APPROACH UNIVERSITY MISSION The University of La Verne offers a distinctive and relevant educational experience to a diverse population of traditional-age, adult, and graduate learners, preparing them for successful careers and a commitment to life-long learning across the liberal arts and professional programs. CORE VALUES Ethical Reasoning Diversity and Inclusivity Lifelong Learning Community and Civic Engagement APPROACH A Facilities Master Plan is strategic in nature, identifying a vision for the next 20 years. Site plans illustrate the intent and provide a graphic representation of this vision for regional campuses. It is important to note that the Master Plan is not a design, but rather a plan for the future improvement of the University s facilities in support of the Mission and Core Values. The University of La Verne s nine regional campuses and the College of Law are fundamental to the Vision of the University, but must be looked at with a distinct perspective in the context of a Facility Master Plan. Properties are generally leased, the size of campus locations varies based on regional need, and over time the number of campuses could expand and change. These variables cannot be easily addressed with a long-range site plan. Therefore the approach of this Master Plan is to define and explore three overarching themes that were identified during the University s community engagement and visioning process. When implemented over time, these enable the La Verne Experience to be accessible to all University students, regardless of location.
136 CONNECTIVITY con nec tiv i ty \(,)kä-,nek- ti-vɘ-tē, kə-\ noun the state or extent of being connected or interconnected STUDENT CONNECTION TO EACH OTHER Students earning degrees through innovative programs at regional campus locations or on-line through the virtual campus connect with students in the classroom, but are challenged to connect informally and socially, regardless of physical distance. In order for students to connect anytime and anywhere, dedicated social space is required. Once seen as an indulgence, this space is essential for today s student. Additional Considerations: Adjacent access to food, fitness/wellness and reflection. STUDENTS AMONG CAMPUSES Informal Students in any region should be able to participate with their peers at a campus lecture or debate. In our Visioning sessions, participants noted one of the best things about attending a University is the ability to stumble upon something unexpected, and having it impact your day, if not your life. This requires the right space, and the right technology. Formal As the University incorporates more opportunities for hybrid and online courses, the use of well-designed and appropriately sized classrooms for distance learning is increasingly relevant. MASTER PLAN RECOMMENDATIONS A regional campus must provide seamless connectivity to technology, from peer-to-peer, between campus locations and finally, connectivity to the community of the University. Several features of digital collaboration, virtual or physical, will better support these exchanges related to information sharing and diverse informal sharing at the regional campuses: Wireless + Wired Connectivity Video Conferencing and Distance Learning Electronic Room Reservation Social Spaces and Technology Resource Library The La Verne Lounge Active Circulation space with Interactive Monitors Digital Displays connecting to the Community. 75% 80% FACULTY CONNECTIVITY FACULTY STUDENTS CONNECTION TO COMMUNITY The student experience at each campus should share awareness of events and happenings in the local, regional and global community, encouraging students to be engaged in not only the local campus community but the University as a whole. interested in video conferencing with remote campus locations STUDENTS interested in a technology center for collaboration space STUDENTS 100% 88% Information from the Master Plan Technology Survey, May 2014
137 TECHNOLOGY tech nol o gy \tek-ˈnä-lə-jē\ 1 noun the specialized aspects of a particular field of endeavor Technology is a vital component of Education delivery. TECHNOLOGY TO ENHANCE FORMAL LEARNING 2 Section 7 of this Master Plan references seven spaces that enhance formal learning. These are the fundamental building components of how technology assists in education delivery. Each Regional Campus should include the following: 1 Seminar Room(s) 2 General Classroom(s) 3 Distance Learning Lab 3 TECHNOLOGY TO ENHANCE INFORMAL LEARNING Section 7 of this Master Plan references two spaces that enhance informal learning. The quantity and area of these spaces should be sized based on the number of students served. The impact of these spaces will change student culture. Students may linger longer, as the space becomes a meeting place and destination alternative to the local coffee shop. Each Regional Campus should include the following spaces to encourage co-curricular experiences: 4 La Verne Lounge 5 Hi Tech Resource Center 6 Active Circulation 4 5 6
138 BRANDING brand ing \ˈbran-diŋ\ noun promoting the brand : every association and experience, functional and emotional, intrinsic and original, contextual and positional, active and intentional THE LA VERNE EXPERIENCE The success of branding is measured by whether a space is memorable. Students should take with them a deeper understanding of the University. Each regional campus is an opportunity to engage students and faculty to live and breathe the La Verne Experience brand image. This well-articulated Educational Vision can be interpreted through color and materials to create strong consistency. But it also must be identified with new types of social space, integrated technology, greater transparency, graphic identity, and flexible furniture. The goal is to have the University stand out among competitors and ensure that the University of La Verne educational environment conveys a strong statement about who we are to attract and retain students. SPACES TYPES [LEARNING COMMUNITIES] To create opportunities for academic learning beyond the classrooms, different scales of space that promote connectivity between small, medium and large groups are essential. Research tells us that the way in which students concentrate on, process, absorb and retain information varies based on Learning Preferences. A collection of learning spaces to create a community will address the perceptual and environmental preferences, making for a more desirable and effective learning space. [THEORY TO PRACTICE] Integrating the practical application with the theoretical concept provides a deeper understanding, resulting in life-long learners. The practical aspects of learning have an impact on space and experience. Students will collaborate, prototype, and experience realworld lessons. The space must change to reflect the brand. Qualitative design characteristics that span across interdisciplinary labs include a need for natural daylighting, connections to the outdoors, transparency (process on display) and opportunities for collaboration at the intersections of main circulation. Space should be a vibrant environment for active participation and innovation that is flexible and adaptable to changing needs. [INTEGRATED LEARNING/REFLECTION] Creating life-long learners and graduates that are committed to their communities at all levels goes beyond the learning spaces and begins to address the social spaces of a specific campus. As important as the aesthetic brand of a university is, the regional campuses must address the context of the local community. Students should have access to the La Verne Lounge for student-run activities, social events and community support. The La Verne Lounge should, if possible, have a connection to the outdoors for curricular and community based activities. [COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT] Tying together curricular and non-curricular lessons for students in a holistic manner calls for the incorporation of environmental graphics. Utilizing graphics that go beyond signage, way-finding and logo will create a sense of place...a connection for students to identify with. Examples of environmental graphics might include an expression of history and heritage, or culture and vision. The La Verne student can identify with an experience at any moment of their educational career. Additionally, having spaces that share back the lessons, practices and culture of the university with the community will create a holistic community engagement. Active circulation space should become exhibition zones, showcasing the University capabilities to the community - art, clinics, tutoring... essentially, the brand on display. MASTER PLAN RECOMMENDATIONS Our physical environment affects how well we work and learn; the spaces at University of La Verne will express the attitudes, beliefs, and values of the people who inhabit them. Space is the physical representation of the emotional message. To ensure a consistent brand, this master plan recommends consistency between the campuses in material qualities. Creating a culture of experience that will give students a memorable learning identity.
