4 History of St. Vitus Cathedral St. Vitus Cathedral is an important feature of the Prague Castle complex and one of the city's most distinctive landmarks. Its full name is St. Vitus, St. Wenceslas and St. Adalbert Cathedral. Its history dates back to 1344 and work began on the orders of John of Luxembourg. The first architect was Matthew of Arras and upon his death the job was given to Swabian Peter Parler. In 1419 the work was interrupted by the Hussite Wars. The cathedral was finally completed during the 19th (Josef Kranner and Josef Mocker) and 20th centuries (Kamil Hilbert) with the final piece of stained glass installed in 1926.

5 West Face The western part of the cathedral is the newest. Located there is the official main entrance to the cathedral and a beautiful stained glass rose window by František Kysela.

6 South Face The dominant feature of the this side of the cathedral is the renaissance bell tower, capped with a baroque helmet. It holds Zikmund, the biggest bell in the Czech Republic.

7 Golden Portal The Golden Portal is the former main entrance on the South side of the cathedral. Above it is a mosaic of The Last Judgement created by Italian craftsmen in the 14th century. It is made from chipped flint and 33 different shades of glass.

8 St. Wenceslas Chapel St. Wenceslas chapel is dedicated to the patron of Czech lands, Prince Wenceslas. It was built by Charles IV in the former location of the Romanesque rotunda where Wenceslas was buried. The walls are covered with beautiful gothic frescoes depicting scenes from the Bible and the life of the saint. The lower parts of the walls are decorated with more than 1300 gems.the holy relics of the saint are in a case on the tombstone.

9 Crown Chamber Behind a door in the South West corner of St. Wenceslas Chapel there is a staircase leading to the Crown Chamber. The chamber holds the Coronation Jewels of the Czech Republic. They are behind two doors which have seven locks. The locks can be opened only if the holders of all seven keys are present.

10 Tomb of St. John Nepomuk An outstanding five-meter-high baroque silver tomb of St. John of Nepomuk was designed by Josef Emanuel Fischer from Erlach between It is the largest work in precious metal in Bohemia.

11 Crypt and the Royal Mausoleum Located inside the cathedral is the renaissance mausoleum for Kings Ferdinand I, Maxmilian II and Anna Jagiellon. Below this mausoleum is a crypt containing the royal tombs of Charles IV and his four wives, King George of Poděbrady, Ladislav Pohrobek, and King Wenceslav IV. Below the ground the remains of the Romanesque Basilica are preserved.

12 Stained Glass Windows St. Vitus Cathedral contains numerous exquisite examples of 20th century Czech stained glass. A famous Czech Art Nouveau painter, Alfons Mucha, decorated the new windows in the North part of nave.

13 Gargoyles Gargoyles were designed to convey water from the roof and away from the structure. They typically depict fantastic animals, monsters, and dragons. The gargoyles are said to scare evil spirits away from the church.
