Hanover School Value Propositions Paved Surfaces Are your football/soccer teams a source of school pride? How would your community feel if you weren t able to host football or soccer games? Suppose a rival community burned a disparaging remark into your athletic field and you weren t able to host events as a result. Placing your school s insurance with Hanover ensures that your paved surfaces, such as natural or artificial turf athletic fields, parking lots, tennis courts and tracks are covered. And should a covered cause of loss cause damage to your athletic field, your business interruption insurance will be triggered which will provide coverage for the extra expenses you will expend in leasing other athletic field space to host your events while repairs are made to yours. This means that you won t have to worry about canceling your school s football season if the field is damaged and leaves it unusable. And your community will still be able to provide crucial revenue through ticket and concession stand sales. Fundraiser Business Income What additional services/programs do you provide that are dependent on the support of your community/alumni through fundraising events? What would happen if you weren t able to host a major fundraising event? What would you do if your gymnasium floor were damaged due to leakage of your sprinkler system a day before a major fundraising dinner was to be held there? 1
With Hanover Insurance, we will reimburse for up to $50,000 of lost fundraising income should a covered cause of loss occurs that prevents you from holding your planned event. This means that you won t have to worry about further financial loss to your school in addition to the stress of fixing/repairing your school s gymnasium floor. Personal Effects of Students Imagine a fire breaks out in the locker room. Now imagine all of the ipads, ipods, smartphones that your students have tucked in those lockers while at practice. And now imagine having to inform the parents of those students that they will need to submit a claim against their homeowners policy to have the ipad, ipod or smartphone replaced (subject to the deductible of course!). With Hanover insurance, you will have a limit of $100,000 available to repair or replace those personal effects of students that are damaged due to a covered cause of loss. This means you won t have to worry about facing those unpleasant conversations, you might even get to play the role of hero! Key Employee How would your school respond to the death of a key employee? Do you receive healthy financial support from the community/alumni due to a particular individual? A coach? Provost? Chancellor? If they should pass away or suffer a permanent disability, would the financial support continue? For how long? What other aspects of your institution s management would suffer? With Hanover Insurance, should a key employee that has been identified and scheduled pass away or suffer a permanent disability, we will provide up to $50,000 to cover key employee replacement expenses which include: Expenses to continue performance of normal job duties Fees to an employment agency 2
Costs of advertising for replacement Education and training expenses Costs associated with interviewing, investigating or retaining potential replacements 1 st year excess salary and benefits up to 15% of key employee s compensation This allows you to focus on the continuing operational needs of your school. Pollution Liability Imagine a couple of possible scenarios: A student brings an old mercury thermometer to school, breaks it open during chemistry class and the group proceeds to spend the next 25 minutes playing with slippery, silvery mercury. Or a chemical spill from your pool spreads to the neighboring farm s irrigation pond. Are you covered with your current insurance program? With Hanover Insurance, you have the ability to purchase limited Pollution Liability insurance to cover events such as these. This means that you don t have to worry about the potential catastrophic damages that you could face due to a seemingly innocuous event that is a normal part of your school s operations. 3
School Publication Liability Your school s yearbook gets printed, published and distributed. Shortly thereafter an irate father calls you and you discover that before the yearbook went to print, some students changed the captions under some of the photos to include disparaging and libelous comments about his daughter. Hanover provides School Broadcasting and Publication Liability that provides coverage for defense and any damages awarded in the event of liability arising from a school publication, material published on the school s website and also any alleged slander as a result of a school s broadcast. This means you won t have to worry about the cost of defending the school and paying for damages arising from materials published or broadcast in student newsletters, newspapers, yearbooks, school websites, school radio stations or school TV stations. Emergency Event Management Schools can incur multiple unexpected expenses when faced with an emergency event. If the event is one of violence, there can be grief counseling, extra security, or funeral/burial expenses. Additionally, the school will need access to a media management expert in order to communicate with the media, control the message and preserve the image/reputation of the school. Other emergency events of a nonviolent nature can also cause a school to incur unexpected expenses or a loss of income. An outbreak of a norovirus can cause the cancellation of a parents weekend resulting in the loss of income from a bookstore or rooms rented to parents by the school. 4
Hanover provides Emergency Event Management coverage that will pay for extra expenses incurred and the loss of income resulting from an emergency event. This means that with everything else the school will have to be dealing with after an emergency event, they won t have to worry about the extra expenses and lost business income. Sexual Misconduct and Molestation Hardly a week goes by without a story in the news detailing a teacher, coach or other school official being involved in an inappropriate relationship with a student or other minor involved with the school. In the most heinous cases, the school employee is a pedophile. The aftermath of these incidents can include financial liability and damage to the reputation of the school. Hanover offers Sexual Misconduct and Molestation coverage to schools. This coverage provides for the defense and damages awarded in the event of an incident of inappropriate sexual contact by a school employee or volunteer with a student or other minor. Hanover claims adjusters will adjust the matter efficiently and discreetly assuring that the best interests of the school are protected and served. Additionally, Hanover offers coverage for the reimbursement of defense costs of an innocent employee who is wrongfully accused of sexual misconduct or molestation. This coverage means that the school doesn t have to worry about financial ruin due to the despicable act of an employee or volunteer. 5
Educators Legal Liability There are multiple issues/incidents for which a school can be sued that do not involve bodily injury or property damage. From violations of the academic freedom of teachers to the suppression of student speech to an allegation as vague as the failure to educate, the list is endless. That s why schools need Educators Legal Liability coverage that covers a broad range of allegations that can be made against a school. The Hanover Insurance Group offers Educators Legal Liability with a broad definition of wrongful act that includes any negligent act, error, omission, misstatement or misleading statement. Additionally, Hanover provides defense costs coverage for suits against a school that only seek an injunction or other non-monetary relief. These coverages are designed to dovetail and work in conjunction with the other liability coverage provided to schools by Hanover Insurance so that you don t have to worry about coverage gaps between forms. 6
Employment Practices Liability According to Department of Labor statistics, suits alleging unfair treatment in the workplace are on the rise. Schools are certainly not immune from this trend. Hanover Insurance has developed market leading Educational Institution EPLI coverage to address this exposure. The Educational Institution EPLI form provides coverage for such school-specific EPLI claims such as: Wrongful denial of tenure or practice privileges Negligent evaluation or reassignment of a teacher Wrongful breach of a teacher employment contract In addition, Hanover provides coverage to address the recent spike in retaliation and emotional distress EPLI claims. Hanover also offers a range of flexibility in coverage forms to fit any school s needs and budget such as: Defense costs inside or outside the limits of insurance Optional third party EPLI coverage Optional defense coverage for Wage and Hour claims. With all of this flexibility, you don t have to worry about being able to provide the most appropriate coverage for any given school. 7
