2 Overview of this Session Present categories for potential enhancements to the RDE over the next year (Release 3.0) or beyond Present suggested enhancements in each category Provide feedback for presented features and suggestions for additional features Vote for which categories are most important 2

3 Note on Timing for Enhancements Near-term enhancements help determine the direction for long-term RDE evolution. An ambitious new feature may not be achieved within the next year, but steps can be taken toward the realization of that capability. 3

Searching Across Data Environments More sophisticated search and filter capability like a database (e.g., records with speeds > 60 mph on rainy or snowy days) Automated searches of standardized metadata files Search by tag capability extended to federated data environments Searchable metadata available for federated data environments 5

Ability to Handle Big Data Ability to store and reference large volumes of connected vehicle data Ability to search through huge data files for items of special interest Ability to create on the fly subset files that can be downloaded Ability to deliver large volumes of data by methods other than Internet download (e.g. mailing CDs or external hard drives) 6

Data Analytics Capabilities Ability to conduct data analytics processes on files on RDE without downloading them Create new data subsets or files with new data values Enable analytics capabilities through data file formats more efficient than text files Store and distribute RDE-related software (e.g., data quality checks, aggregation tools, or plotting routines) 7

Real-time Data Provision and Playback Expand ability to provide data in real-time as it is collected Emulate a real-time feed through play-back of archived data Note: these features are required under the Prototype Operational Data Environment task for at least two data environments Should we retrofit existing data environments to simulate real-time data feeds? Adjustable parameters? 8

9 5. Support for External Applications (EA) API that supports ability of automated tools to extract data An EA should not be able to overload the RDE server Concurrent EA searches and downloads should be monitored Gather statistics of EA use 9

10 6. Data Management More flexible data hierarchy (beyond current 3 levels), with supporting search capability File versioning (make available current version and some previous versions) Object-level security System Performance monitoring 10

11 7. Enhanced User Experience Versions of RDE tailored for mobile devices RSS Feeds Instructions and directions for using RDE Help services Tie-in to Data.gov 11

12 8. Collaboration Tools User forums / Discussion boards Ability to share and search user profiles Search by title of research project or by content of comments List of potential research questions that can be explored with RDE data Tracking and following up comments 12
