DSS Devices & Solution Components Developing a comprehensive DSS solution requires the construction of multiple devices and the assembly of several components. The following diagram shows the relevant products and typical topology of a DSS solution. The nearby table provides a more detailed description of each of these product components. Product Types Product Description Digital Video Recorder Interfaces with traditional analog CCTV camera in either SD or HD resolution. Performs video encoding, video display, real-time video analytics, and local video storage. Hybrid Digital Video Recorder (Hybrid DVR) Interfaces with both analog and IP cameras. Similar functions as DVR. Network Video Recorder (NVR) Video Analytics Server IP Encoder / IP Hub Interfaces with IP camera only. Primary focus on video decoding, display, video analytics and video storage function. NVR usually has more storage capacity than DVR system. DVR/NVR/IP Encoder/IP Camera offload data to the server which performs real-time and forensic video analytics processing of data. Encodes analog video streams into digital IP streams with selected video codec and streams over to NVR and video analytics server. Analog Camera Remote Site A Internet Cloud Remote Site C Center Management Office IP Decoder / Video Wall Driver Decodes IP video streams and sends display over to surveillance video wall. IP Camera Captures and digitizes video input stream, encodes with video codec, packetizes it and streams it over to NVR or video analytics server. Network Attached Storage (NAS) NAS provides a remote networked centralized storage file system for a smaller user pool. It helps offload the local storage burden and ease network throughput for video file streaming in a surveillance video network environment. Remote Site B Storage Area Network (SAN) SAN is designed for bigger corporate storage arrays that handle block-based video files for archiving and backup purposes. 9

DSS Solution Design Considerations

DSS Solution Design Considerations While it is a relatively straightforward process to develop a DSS platform, your choice of ingredients can have a profound effect on the overall performance and capability of the solution. Everything matters, including processing performance and speed, power consumption, network throughput, storage availability and platform reliability. It can all affect how well the solution supports selected DSS applications. CPU and GPU Processing Capabilities and Workload For DSS systems, the workloads handled by the CPU and GPU are massive. They must handle video color conversion, video encoding, video decoding, video scaling and display, storing video onto the hard disk, video packetization for streaming, as well as running the software video management GUI as the interface for live video viewing, access control and data storage management. Therefore, when choosing your processing platform for your DVR and/or NVR, you must be sure that it has the capability of supporting the workloads of a DSS system. Analog to Digital Conversion With a number of analog-based CCTV solutions currently deployed, it s important to continue delivering solutions that enable conversion of raw analog video to digital signals for handling by the processor. One option is to use an analog-to-digital video capture card that sends the raw digital signals to the CPU for video encoding. A more robust DSP version of the video capture card takes care of the video encoding on the card, thereby freeing the CPU for other important tasks. A third option is to use 2nd generation Intel Core processors that have this capability built into the integrated graphics processor a solution that delivers similar performance in video encode/decode as the hardware-based video capture card without the added cost. Network I/O Configuration and Throughput An NVR will likely require more LAN ports with more robust throughput capabilities than a DVR because of the incoming IP packets that carry encoded video information from the connected IP cameras. The more cameras that are connected, the more ports required. In any solution, a good network throughput rate is desired, and depends on the number of concurrent IP camera video streams being serviced by the device. You should also have at least 2 Gigabit Ethernet ports on any DVR and NVR platform. One of those ports will handle downstream traffic, or all incoming IP video packets. The other port must be dedicated to upstream traffic, or video frames, clips or metadata information being sent to backend servers or a storage array. Separating these two data streams helps balance the system and network load as well as offering redundancy in the event that one port fails. 11

DSS Solution Design Considerations cont d Storage Considerations Storage can be one of the biggest challenges when developing both DVR and NVR platforms. While capacity is important, so is the number of disks available to enable load balancing when writing multiple large encoded video files concurrently to the storage system. Entry level products should ideally have at least two hard disks, medium range products at least four disks, and higher end systems should consider offering at least eight hard disks. Very large DSS solutions would have an external storage array system such as a network attached storage (NAS) array which uses file-based transfer, or a storage area network (SAN) which uses block-based transfer. It s also important to consider data protection in your storage plans. Using a redundant array of independent disks (RAID), you can provide redundant storage of all video files, ensuring that most of this data is recoverable in the event that one or more disks fails. At all RAID levels, Intel RAID Controllers lower total cost of ownership and provide your system with simple, high performance data protection. 12

Optimizing Your DSS Solutions Using Intel Technology

Optimizing Your DSS Solutions Using Intel Technology By choosing Intel platforms for your DSS solutions, you can effectively lower your development cost and speed time to market while delivering a highly capable system.
