1 Academic Program Review Spring 2011 Program: Criminal Justice Technology Prepared by: Dana Glenn Brady Approved by: Brian Gerald Dopson, Ed.D. Date Submitted: 10/5/11

2 Description of the Program Review Process Program review is part of Florida Gateway College s (FGC) ongoing institutional effectiveness process to achieve its mission and goals through strategic planning, research, evaluation, and the use of information and data to guide decisions and actions. Educational programs, administrative and educational support departments are systematically reviewed as part of the process. The purpose of program review is to evaluate the quality of education, efficiency of services and processes, and adequacy of institutional resources. It is a tool used to document the achievement of goals and objectives. The results of evaluation are analyzed and actions are taken to address areas that need improvement. The dean or director approves the completed report and submits it to the department of Research and Institutional Effectiveness (RIE). RIE coordinates the distribution of the report to the program review committee and instructs them on the proper assessment procedure. RIE compiles the results from the program review committee and creates a summary for the administrative review committee. The administrative review committee will meet with the appropriate department representatives to discuss the findings and recommendations of the committees. 4 Section 2 -Program Content Description: For whom is it intended? Criteria for admissions to program; Degrees, certificates, diplomas; type of students served; demographic information; other There are three degrees offered in this program: Criminal Justice Technology General, Criminal Justice Technology Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Technology Corrections. The latter two degrees are specifically intended for individuals who have received certificates in either Corrections or Law Enforcement from the Criminal Justice Training Center. Students with a certificate in corrections can articulate sixteen credit hours to an AS degree in Criminal Justice Technology Corrections while students with a certificate in law enforcement can articulate twenty five credit hours to Criminal Justice Technology Law Enforcement. List courses in the program that support other programs: There are articulation agreements in place which support this program. First, there are three high schools in our service area with criminal justice programs: Baker County High School, Bell High School and Columbia High School. Articulation Agreements allow a student who completes the criminal justice program at their local high school and passes the Criminal Justice Exam to receive credit for CCJ 1020: Introduction to Criminal Justice and CCJ 1000: Roles of Criminal Justice in Crime and Delinquency. Second, as previously discussed, students who receive a certificate from the Criminal Justice Training Center in either Law Enforcement or Corrections have the opportunity to articulate those hours to credit hours in the A.S. degree program. Finally, all of the following criminal justice courses are transferable A.A. electives: CCJ 1000: Roles of Criminal Justice in Crime and Delinquency CCJ 1020: Introduction to Criminal Justice CCJ 2010: Introduction to Criminology CCJ 2052: History of Criminal Justice CJC 2162: Probation, Pardons and Parole CJC 2400: Understanding Criminal Behavior CJJ 2002: Introduction to Juvenile Justice CJL 2001: Legal Rights and Responsibilities CJL 2062: Constitutional Law CJL 2080: Comparative Legal Systems CJL 2101: Criminal Law II External Accreditation (the process, what is involved & status) N/A Community Outreach/Workforce Training Programs There are currently no workforce training programs in place. The program recently piloted an extra credit program offering students extra credit to participate in ride along programs with local law enforcement agencies and to observe court proceedings. In addition, guest speakers are brought to campus each semester to expose students to different occupations within in the criminal justice system. Page 4 of 18

5 Distance education offerings and use of technology (include evaluation of efforts) Currently the majority of the criminal justice courses offered each semester are offered online. Due to the large geographic size of our service area and the fact that many of the criminal justice students work full-time and/or are nontraditional students, the goal is to offer all of the criminal justice courses on line at least once every two years. 16 Section 5: Comprehensive Analysis List the internal and external factors affecting your program External: Internal: Discipline Trends What is happening What is happening internally at the external to the college (e.g., in the college (e.g., changing student community, advisory group input, with demographics, declining enrollment) that technology,) that might affect what we do might affect what we do in the future as a in the future as a department? department? Being new to the college I am not prepared at this time to address trends within the college. Strengths: Describe the strengths of your program. (Improved course and program SLO s, interdepartmental relationships, industry partnerships, advisory council participation, etc.) The program provides a unique opportunity to criminal justice students from our local high schools and recruits at the Criminal Justice Training Center in that they can articulate credits into the criminal justice program. This is a valuable recruiting tool to encourage individuals who already have a vested interest in the field of criminal justice to further their education with an AS degree. However, this pool of potential students has been under-recruited until recently making it a weakness as well. Over the past year, recruiting visits have been made to each of the three high school criminal justice programs as well as each of the recruit classes at the Training Center explaining the articulation process. In addition, the criminal justice class from Bell High School (the biggest high school criminal justice program in the State of Florida) was brought to the main campus as well as the Criminal Justice Training Center campus for a tour. Weaknesses: Comprehensive, self reflective list of all areas needing improvement. There are very few graduates in comparison to the number of students who declare the program as their major. There is not a consistent schedule of when courses will be offered. If students knew when courses were going to be offered, they could plan their schedules accordingly and make success more likely. Summarize program and department improvements Page 16 of 18
