5 DISCOVERY SUMMER CAMP All of the academic curriculum, enrichment classes, and fun activities listed below are included in our Discovery Summer Camp tuition. Our objective at Bee Best Learning Center is for students to experience continued learning during the summer weeks while also having the opportunity to engage in fun and energetic activities. ACADEMIC CURRICULUM The following academic subjects are included in our Discovery Summer Camp. These classes are held four mornings each week on Mondays through Thursdays. Your child will study math, English, and either Mandarin Chinese or Spanish. Mathematics Through Accelerated Math s technology, we create individualized practice assignments tailored at each child s level. The personalized worksheets will keep every child motivated and challenged. Your children will tackle new objectives and dramatically improve their math skills. Each week we provide ongoing feedback on your child s daily practice skills. English (reading/grammar) This program enhances and expands language arts concepts taught during the school year. We primarily use grade appropriate language worksheets from well-known publishers. This will help your child meet the state standards and challenge them to achieve higher levels. Parents may choose one of the following language classes: Mandarin Chinese We teach simplified Mandarin Chinese. Our goal for this program is to provide a lively and interesting Chinese learning environment for children and to stimulate their interest in learning Chinese. We are using the standard Zhong Wen Chinese textbook. Spanish Students learn basic Spanish vocabulary and sentences through fun group activities, worksheets, songs, and oral practice. There will also be opportunities for children to learn more about Spanish culture and holidays. ENRICHMENT CLASSES The following enrichment classes are taught in the afternoons Monday through Thursday each week and included in our Discovery Summer Camp. Critical Thinking Through fun worksheets, group games, and activities (analogies, deductive guessing games, group strategy activities, mystery stories), students will boost their reasoning and problem solving skills and strategies. American Sign Language Students will learn fingerspelling and basic vocabulary in American Sign Language (ASL) through signing letters, numbers, words, and songs. An introduction to different aspects of deaf culture will also be discussed. Creative Writing Students will write sentences or paragraphs focusing on proper word usage, grammar, and punctuation. They will practice designing their own short stories, descriptions, and dialogue.
6 Science Projects Educational science experiments and activities will help students explore the world around us and identify how science applies to our everyday lives. Some topics will be friction, spring action, magnetism, and flight. FUN ACTIVITIES The following fun crafts, outdoor activities, and theme days are also included in Discovery Summer Camp. Crafts Students will enjoy a variety of creative and fun craft projects, such as pony beads designs, sand art, puzzle decorating, tote bag design, and more. Fun with Food Fun and easy food projects will be introduced as well as related nutrition or cultural facts. Students will have the opportunity to make mini tostadas, fruit smoothies, pudding parfaits, mini pizzas, and more. At the end of class, students can eat their edible creations or take them home. (Due to the number of children with food allergies, Bee Best Learning Center is a peanut-free and tree-nut-free zone.) Drawing Students will learn basic drawing techniques as they express themselves through sketching. They will learn to draw cartoon faces and figures, human and animal characters, and realistic shapes and settings. Building Activities In this class, students will explore various types of construction (such as building a basic bird house or butterfly box), and they will also create beautiful origami projects as they learn fundamental paper folds. Each day an organized sport or outdoor group activity will be introduced, such as basketball, relays, kickball, etc. Students will learn and practice good sportsmanship, game rules, drills, and then have plenty of opportunity to play. Indoor Group Games Students will play a variety of indoor group games including charades, board games, and trivia challenges as well as have a weekly opportunity to sing, dance, or share a talent. Outdoor Play Students can play outside in our gated and covered patio area in the morning, after lunch, and in the late afternoon. Friday Fun Days Each Friday will be a fun theme filled day. Students are invited to participate by dressing up or bringing an item to share. The day will include special activities, crafts, and games as well as a morning visit to the park across the street and a fun afternoon movie. Some planned themes include the following: Circus Tricks wear colorful clothing, make circus crafts, and watch a professional juggler do amazing tricks Pajama fun students wear pajamas, have fun jumping in a bounce house, and then watch the afternoon movie laying on their sleeping bags or blankets Jungle Time wear green and camouflage clothing, make animal crafts, then learn more about jungle creatures with a visit from a reptile or bird expert. Note: All listed activities and projects are subject to change.
7 TECHNOLOGY SUMMER CAMP Computer game design, robotics, programming, movie production, and animation are some of the exciting possibilities for students participating in Bee Best Technology Summer Camp, where the fun and learning never stop. The curriculum encourages creative thinking through age-appropriate projects designed to maximize the fun with outdoor breaks and group games throughout the day to complement individual exploration. Bee Best Technology Summer Camp is offered during the summer for students entering grades 3-8. This is a full five day program from 9:00 am through 4:00 pm Mondays through Fridays. (Free extended care is available from 7:00-9:00 am and/or 4:00-6:30 pm) Each child will work on a laptop with counselor guidance to create a project of their choosing. Each session is limited to 10 students. Here is a quick review of the core competencies upon which your child s experience is built: Engineering & Robotics Engineering activities introduce students to mechanical and programming concepts. Students will learn about topics such as gear ratios, locomotion, and energy as they construct mechanisms using LEGOs. They will also write kid-friendly program code to bring these creations to life. Video Game Design Our game design activities teach students the fundamentals of programming and video game design. Students will create and develop a storyboard and bring characters to life in their own video games. Our strict non-violence policy encourages creative and unique story lines.
