5 Executive summary This document describes the support of Dell Force10, PDU, UPS with OpenManage Essentials. The following topics are covered in this document: Device discovery/inventory and classification Device health Application launch Monitoring these devices (alerts) Troubleshooting Introduction OpenManage Essentials enables you to manage and monitor the discovered Dell Force10, PDU, and UPS devices, in addition to the devices supported in previous versions, in a single, centralized mode. Prerequisites OpenManage Essentials discovers and receives alerts from Dell Force10, PDU, and UPS devices using the SNMP protocol. SNMP protocol versions V1 and V2 are currently supported. Before you begin: Configure the SNMP protocol on all the target devices and set the management station IP on the machine where OpenManage Essentials is installed. Specify the same IP address for the SNMP trap receiver for that device. Use the troubleshooting section for more help on how to make sure that a target device is configured correctly for proper management by OpenManage Essentials. Although these settings are not required on all these devices, Dell recommends checking the SNMP configuration before performing the discovery/inventory. Device discovery/inventory and classification Use the following procedure for discovering a Dell Forc10, PDU, or UPS using OpenManage Essentials: 1. Launch OpenManage Essentials. 2. Navigate to Manage -> Discovery and Inventory. 3. In the left tree, click Add Discovery Range. 4. Enter the IP address / Host name and subnet mask, and then click Add. 5

7 Figure 3. SNMP Configuration Get community field. Classification of Dell devices The following sections describe how Dell devices are classified. Dell Force10 After completion of the discovery task, navigate to the Devices tab to see the discovered device. Dell Force10 devices are classified under All Devices -> Network Devices -> Switches tab in the tree on the left side. Click on the discovered device to review all the inventoried tables as shown in the following figure: 7

Dell Force10 classification and inventory Note: The Device summary and Switch Device Information tables display the Service Tag field only if the Dell Force10 device is running with a Firmware version of or later. If the firmware version is lower than , then the Service Tag column displays N/A. Locate the firmware version under the Version column of the Firmware Information table. Note: Update all your target devices with latest firmware available. Dell PDU Dell PDU devices are classified under the All Devices -> Power Devices-> PDU tab in the tree on the left side. Click on the discovered device to see all the inventoried tables as shown in the following figure: 8

9 Figure 5. Dell PDU classification and inventory. Dell UPS Dell UPS devices are classified under the All Devices -> Power Devices-> UPS tab in the tree on the left side. Click on the discovered device to see all the inventoried tables as shown in the following figure: 9

10 Figure 6. Dell UPS classification and inventory Device health Health status reflects the overall health of the device contributed by its SNMP agent. The health status can be Critical, Warning, Normal or Unknown. Refer to the Table 1 for more details: Symbol Description Table 1. Device health symbols Shows that a device is critical and requires attention. This information is rolled up to the parent device type. For example, if a PDU is in critical state and requires attention, the same symbol is assigned to the parent device type; for example: Power Devices. The critical health state is given the highest priority. That is, in a group, if different devices are in different states, and if one device is in critical state, then the state of the parent device type is set to critical. Shows that there is a deviation from the expected behavior, but the device is still manageable. Shows that the device is working as expected. Shows either that the device type is unknown and it is classified as an unknown device or that the health status cannot be determined, because the device does not have proper instrumentation or the proper protocol was not used to discover the device. 10

11 Warranty information support OpenManage Essentials 1.1 supports warranty by providing a built-in report for warranty information and a hyperlink, which takes you to the online warranty renewal location. This warranty information is collected at run time from the Dell Web site by providing the corresponding service tag for the hardware. Warranty information is supported for Dell Force10; however not for Dell PDU, and UPS. This is because Dell PDU and UPS devices do not populate the service tag information, which is required to fetch warranty information. You can view the Warranty report for a Dell Force10 device by navigating to Reports -> Warranty Information tab as shown below: Figure 7. Warranty information Application Launch Application Launch provides a right-click action menu on the discovered device to launch 1 1 console or application. OpenManage Essentials provides the capability to launch and navigate to the device specific portals for Dell PDU and UPS. Dell Force10 does not provide any specific portal for more information/configuration like Dell PDU and UPS devices. If you are running a firmware version (or later) on a Dell Force10 device, then the Application Launch option for View and Renew Warranty appears; otherwise it does not. Use the Application Launch action as shown in the following figure: Figure 8. Application Launch for Dell PDU. 11

12 Configuring custom URLs OpenManage Essentials supports the creation and launch of custom URLs on the Dell Force10, PDU, and UPS devices. Use this feature when you want to visit the same URL for a group of devices. Once created, any device falling under the group gets added with the custom URL launch. Creating a Custom URL Steps to create a custom URL for Dell Force10, PDU or UPS are as follows: 1. Click Preferences -> Custom URL Settings. 2. In the upper right hand corner, click the Plus Sign (+) button. 3. Enter the Name, URL, Description, and select the device type from the drop-down list. After entering the URL, you can also test the URL launch by clicking the Test URL button. 4. Click Ok. Figure 9. Creating a custom URL. Launching the custom URL 1. Click Manage -> Devices and select the device from the tree. 2. Right-click the device and select Application Launch. 12

13 Figure 10. Launching the custom URL. Alerts (SNMP traps) The SNMP alerts received from Dell Force10, PDU, and UPS devices are shown under the Alerts tab of the respective devices. OpenManage Essentials currently supports SNMP V1/V2 alerts. The status of the device is polled every time an SNMP trap is received from that device. For example, if a trap with critical severity is received from a device, status of that device is set to Critical. Understanding the Alert types The following alert log types are displayed: Table 2. Icon Alert Description Normal Alerts Alert types An event from a device that describes the successful operation of a unit, such as a power supply turning on. Warning Alerts Critical Alerts Unknown Alerts Information Alerts An event that is not necessarily significant, but may indicate a possible future problem, such as crossing a warning threshold. A significant event that indicates actual or imminent loss of data or loss of function, such as crossing a failure threshold or a hardware failure. An event has occurred but there is insufficient information to classify it. Provides information only. 13

14 Viewing alerts from a device To view alerts from a device, click on the device in the device tree and then navigate to the Alerts tab as shown below: Figure 11. SNMP alert from a Dell PDU Viewing alert categories The predefined alerts for Dell Force10, PDU, and UPS are seen under the Alert Categories section in OpenManage Essentials. Navigate to Manage -> Alerts -> Alert Categories, and then click the appropriate alert category. 14

16 Figure 14. Alert sources for Dell UPS. Configuring alert actions Alert actions occur on all alerts received by the OpenManage Essentials console. The alert is received and processed to take appropriate action depending upon the user configuration for that alert. To configure an alert action, navigate to Manage -> Alerts -> Alert Actions and then right-click on the appropriate category as shown in Figure 15. Following alert actions are supported in OpenManage Essentials: Application Launch Notification Ignoring Alerts Forwarding Alerts 16

About the OpenManage Essentials Troubleshooting Tool The OpenManage Essentials Troubleshooting Tool is a standalone tool that installs along with OpenManage Essentials. Use this tool for a wide array of protocol related problems that are often at the root of discovery and alert issues. Troubleshooting the discovery of a Dell Force10, PDU, or UPS device 1. Make sure that SNMP is enabled and properly configured on the target device by accessing its Web interface. 2. Launch the Dell Troubleshooting Tool. 3. Navigate to Protocols (Remote Box) tab. 4. Give the IP address of the target device. 5. In the Select Protocol(s) pane, select SNMP. 6. Provide correct community name and click Run Test. The Result window show the SNMP test results for that device. Example (refer Figure 16): For a Dell UPS, the following rows should display: MIB-II (System Name) MIB-II (MAC Address) Dell UPS (Family Name) 17

19 Learn more To learn more, visit: Conclusion Dell OpenManage Essentials v1.1 supports Force10 Network switches, Power Distribution Units (PDU), and Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) power devices. Use OME to discover these devices, to classify them in the respective device groups, receive and classify their incoming SNMP events, associate alert actions on these incoming SNMP traps, view their latest health status, and launch their respective Webconsoles to view more detailed information. In addition, if a Force10 device exposes its service-tag, then OME can display its warranty information. 19
