1 English Language Learning Learning another language and culture isn t easy. As Calgary s largest English Language Learning provider, Bow Valley College has developed ELL programs that provide you with the skills you need to live, study and work in Canada. We work with newcomers to Canada, Canadian citizens, international students, and corporate clients. You are individually assessed for your English-language ability and placed in the appropriate class. English Language Learning at Bow Valley College Classes from basic literacy to college/workplace preparation LINC and Alberta Works funded programs Full-time or part-time study options Multiple start dates throughout the year Highly qualified instructors A curriculum based on Canadian Language Benchmarks
2 FULL-TIME ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING FULL-TIME LINC & ELL Literacy to Benchmark 6 * These classes focus on all skill areas (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) and gives students the language they need to live, work, and study in Canada. 15 weeks 8:00 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. or 11:45 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (schedule is dependent on student s benchmark level and education history) Visit the Prospective Student Centre (on the 1st Floor of the Bow Valley College South Campus) for help with your application. Funding LINC is open to Permanent Residents and Convention Refugees, but not to Canadian citizens. Students that do not qualify for LINC may be eligible for Alberta Works funding (subject to availability and student eligibility). Learners acquire competencies required for success in college preparatory classrooms and the workplace. Admission Requirements Recommended Canadian Language Benchmarks of 6,6,6,6 Satisfactory results on the admission test Minimum of high school education Clear and reasonable academic and career goals A completed application form 8:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. Funding May be available for eligible students. 3 ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING FOR YOUTH Bridge This program is for ELL learners between the ages of 18 and 25 who have interrupted formal education and have not completed high school. This program offers instruction that is age and content appropriate and develops the study and life skills necessary to access further education. 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Youth in Transition * This LINC program is for newcomers to Canada between the ages of 18 and 24. Learners in this program have 10 years or more of formal education and are grouped according to educational experience and language proficiency. Classes are available at CLB levels :30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Funding LINC is open to Permanent Residents and Convention Refugees, but not to Canadian citizens. Students that do not qualify for LINC may be eligible for Alberta Works funding (subject to availability and student eligibility). 4 PART-TIME ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING LINC (PART-TIME) For eligible applicants, there is no charge for LINC classes. Applicants must be permanent residents or convention refugees, but cannot be Canadian citizens. LINC Listening and Speaking Learn conversational skills required for everyday situations. Classes are offered at Canadian Language Benchmark Levels 4 to 7. 5 VOLUNTEER PROGRAMS The volunteer program is funded by Alberta Innovation and Advanced Education through Calgary Learns. 55+ Everyday English 55+ Everyday English tutorials are offered from beginner to advanced levels. Learners can also participate in extra pronunciation and vocabulary sessions. college.ca/ell 10 weeks Tuesday & Thursday 9:00 am-11:00 am Call at the Registrar s Office 55+ Culture and Community In 55+ Culture and Community, learners can practice English while learning about community resources and participate in leisure activities. Topics include: Speaking Successfully, Practical Conversations, Effective Writing, and many more. In this course, students will learn reading, writing, and computer skills and develop employment and personal management skills. Fees may be waived for low-income learners. 6 RESOURCES FOR CAREER ADVANCEMENT CORPORATE READINESS TRAINING PROGRAM (CRTP) This program is designed for foreign-trained professionals who want to develop practical Canadian business skills and relevant work experience in Canada. CRTP Includes 10 weeks of intensive in-class training, 6 weeks of relevant on-site work experience, and 6 months of follow-up career support. 7 ABOUT THE CENTRE FOR EXCELLENCE IN IMMIGRANT & INTERCULTURAL ADVANCEMENT Through the Centre for Excellence in Immigrant and Intercultural Advancement, Bow Valley College reaches out to Canada s immigrant population from internationally educated immigrants to those with lower literacy levels. The Centre also works with Canada s employers, providing intercultural education for existing employees and interns helping Canada stay competitive on the world labour stage. 7
