CaptureSpace manual Software to do recordings Starting on March 1, 2016, you will have access to a new tool to create media content in Mymoodle and play.lnu.se (only for teachers). CaptureSpace is a small application that you install yourself on your computer and it enables you to record, edit and upload media from your computer to our media system LnuPlay for use in Mymoodle and (for teachers:) on the web. More information and support can be found on Kaltura s web page: Utbildningsmiljö, University Library version 1.6, 1

Get started with CaptureSpace The first time you want to use CaptureSpace you need to install and launch it from Mymoodle. The reason is that the software will remember the link where to put your recordings so that in the future you don t need to log in to Mymoodle in order to upload. You just launch the application from your desktop, do your recording and then upload it directly. Go to Mymoodle and log in. 1.Click on Site home in your navigation window, My Media drops down. click on that link (see image to the left) 2.On the My Media page, choose Add new > Record with CaptureSpace (see image below) The following window appears: Click on the download link for your system (Windows or Mac) Please note the System Requirements! If your computer doesn't meet up with these requirements, CaptureSpace will not work properly! Utbildningsmiljö, University Library version 1.6, 3
When using the application for the first time you may be prompted by the browser to approve the application. Each browser may prompt you with a unique message. The image to the right shows an example of the External Protocol Request window as it appears when using Chrome. Click on Launch Application to download the CaptureSpace Desktop Recorder. After the Kaltura CaptureSpace Desktop Recorder downloads, click Install or Run depending on what is shown when you start installing. If using a Mac, open the.dmg file that has been downloaded and drag the Kaltura CaptureSpace Desktop Recorder application to the applications folder. Utbildningsmiljö, University Library version 1.6, 4
On a windows machine you will receive this message after installation is complete: Go back to Mymoodle - Site home My media and click on Add New again. Once more choose Record with CaptureSpace and this time Kaltura CaptureSpace Desktop Recorder will launch. If you receive a warning message, please allow Kaltura CaptureSpace to be launched Now you are ready to start recording your media. You don t need to be online to make a recording since all recordings are done locally on your computer, saved there and can be uploaded when you are back online. Updates Your Kaltura CaptureSpace Desktop Recorder will automatically be updated to the latest version when it is running and you are online. Which version you are currently using is shown under the Help tab: Utbildningsmiljö, University Library version 1.6, 5
Specific settings for Mac users In order for your keyboard to be able to control CaptureSpace with short cuts and to use the arrow keys to switch slides in Powerpoint you need to allow CaptureSpace to control your computer this way. Open System Preferences (Click on the Apple menu logo in your top left corner - choose System preferences ). Click on Security and Privacy and choose the Privacy tab. Under Accessibility, check the box next to Kaltura CaptureSpace Desktop Recorder in the list to the right. Utbildningsmiljö, University Library version 1.6, 6
CaptureSpace -an overview Recording options and requirements You can make a recording in several ways. Depending on what you choose you might need additional equipment. 1. Voice - Microphone or headset 2. Webcam built in or external USB camera and microphone. 3. Screen Microphone or headset 4. Screen & Webcam - built in or external USB camera and microphone. 5. Presentations & Lectures Microsoft PowerPoint and built in or external USB camera and microphone. Note: The microphone in a headset or a dedicated external USB microphone usually produces much better sound quality than the built in microphone on your computer! Settings You need to do some settings depending on the type of recording you want to make, but there are also some default settings already set for you. It is always a good idea to go through these settings before you do your recording. The settings affect the recording quality and if you notice some irregularities in your recording, such as the audio being out of sync, you might need to adjust these settings. This is typically the case with an older computer due to the fact that recording video is a process intense activity for your computer. Settings for Windows The settings shown in the image are the recommended settings. 1 (Webcam) and 2 (Microphone) will have different options depending on your computer and attached equipment. If you use a built in webcam the quality setting of 480p is best to use. If you think that your computer is a bit old and slow, try checking the (3) Slow PC Setting. Utbildningsmiljö, University Library version 1.6, 7
Settings for Mac The settings shown in the image are the recommended settings. 1 (Webcam) and 2 (Microphone) will have different options depending on your computer and attached equipment. If you use a built in webcam the quality setting of 480p is best to use. If you think that your computer is a bit old and slow, try checking the (3) Slow PC Setting. Library Your recordings on your computer At the Library tab you will see all the recordings you have made. The recordings are saved on your computer at the location specified at the Settings tab. If you want to, you can specify a different location by clicking on Browse and choose a different folder on your computer. The recordings you see in your library can be edited, uploaded and deleted from the Library tab. 1. You can see if the recording is uploaded or not. Here it is not uploaded yet, showing with orange text. 2. By clicking on the pen you enter a preview mode where you can edit your recording and upload again. 3. With the x you delete your recording. Remember that it only removes it from your own computer. If you have uploaded it to LnuPlay it will still be there and needs to be deleted from My Media as well. Note: Before you choose to upload a recording it only exists locally on your computer. Once uploaded a link will be shown pointing you to My media in Mymoodle and can be accessed from there. Please note that it will take a moment before it shows in your list in My Media. Utbildningsmiljö, University Library version 1.6, 8
To make a recording - Recording options CaptureSpace is easy to use and are often self explanatory, but here is an overview of the different recording options and what you should bare in mind. The five different recording options are shown on the image to the right and will be explained in more detail below. Note about deleting recordings: In some instances within CaptureSpace you have to save your recording, even if what you want is to abort and make a new one. In those cases, choose to save the recording, make a new one and afterward head over to the Library tab and delete the first, unwanted recording. As long as you don t upload it, it only exists on your computer. 1. Voice Record only your voice When you choose to record only voice you will be prompted with a control panel and a countdown. After 5 seconds the recording starts. You may Pause the recording at any time and resume it at your liking. When you click Done the recording stops and you get prompted with the Preview window where you can listen to your recording and do edits to it before saving it. If you click Cancel you will be asked about cancelling the recording and on acceptance you will see the recording options in CaptureSpace again. 2. Webcam Record your webcam and voice. When you start recording with your webcam you will be presented with a window showing you the view from your chosen (see Settings) webcam. You may Pause the recording at any time and resume it at your liking. When you click Done the recording stops and you get prompted with the Preview window where you can view your recording and do edits to it before saving it. If you click Cancel you will be asked about cancelling the recording and on acceptance you will see the recording options in CaptureSpace again. Utbildningsmiljö, University Library version 1.6, 9
3. Screen Record your computer screen and your voice Screen recordings mean that you record what is actually showing on your computer screen, including the movement of your mouse pointer. When you select this recording method you will be presented with an option screen where you choose to record your entire computer screen or a selected area of it. Note: The recommended format for video in LnuPlay is 1280x720 pixels, but the system is capable of full HD resolution too (1920x1080 pixels). It might be hard for you to determine how many pixels your computer screen consists of. Rule of thumb If you re using a standard lap top computer the option Full Screen usually works well. But if you know that you are using a high resolution screen with a huge number of pixels, it might be a good idea to choose Select Area instead. Our system is good at displaying recordings with smaller areas in a good enough way. Please ask you ICT pedagogue or someone else for advice if you feel uncertain. If you choose to Select Area you will see the view to the right, and by clicking the new button Select area you will get a cross hair sight that you use to click-and-drag a rectangle across the screen marking the area you want to record from your screen. After you select your area, the countdown from 5 begins. Utbildningsmiljö, University Library version 1.6, 10
When the recording starts a control panel opens up at the bottom of your screen 1. This control panel contains the buttons for Pause, Done and Cancel your recording. There s also a number of drawing tools that you can use to draw shapes and figures on the screen. Start them by clicking on the button (1) Draw. When you click on (2) Done the drawing tools disappear again and what you just drew vanishes with the tools (but have of course been recorded with the screen). End your recording by hitting (3) Done in the main control panel and enter the Preview mode where you can make edits to your recording (see next chapter). 4. Screen & Webcam record your screen and your self at the same time The procedure with this is about the same as the previous (3. Screen) but with the difference that you also get a small preview window of your webcam. This window can be moved around on your screen in order for you to choose where you want it to be presented. If you have chosen the option Select Area for the screen recording you can also have the webcam window within the area in the beginning, talking to the viewer, and later move it out of the recorded area to hide away the camera for the duration of the recording. 5. Presentations & Lectures to record an interactive presentation with Powerpoint and webcam. This is the most advanced option in CaptureSpace and opens up to a wide array of features including the ability to record multiple video streams at once. This is also where the biggest differences between the Windows and Mac versions are obvious. In Windows you can add up to three different cameras attached to your computer while you can only use one camera on the Mac computer. 1 It might take a while for the control panel to appear. If not visible it might have ended up behind an open window on your screen. Try to switch to Kaltura Capture Space application control panel by hitting ALT + TAB (in Windows) + TAB (Mac) Utbildningsmiljö, University Library version 1.6, 11
Record a Powerpoint presentation If you want to record an interactive Powerpoint presentation you need to (obviously) have Microsoft Powerpoint installed on your computer. The interactive presentation does not work with other software such as Keynote or OpenOffice. If you don t have Powerpoint, use the Screen recording option instead. You can choose either to record your computer screen or a Powerpoint presentation in this mode. By interactive presentation we mean the fact that when you record your PPT presentation every slide will be saved as a thumbnail and presented in the player for your viewers to navigate between. They will also be able to switch the viewpoint between your presentation and cameras. The image below shows the Windows version. The Mac version is the same except for that you don t get to choose camera 2 and Choose your main camera. If you have more than one attached, choose those under (a) camera 2 and 3. You can also choose the quality setting. 480p is standard. 2. If you want to record your screen, choose screen here (if you have multiple monitors, choose which one you want to record) and make sure the setting is set to On. 3. If you instead want to record a presentation, set the screen capture to Off and the presentation to On. Click on the button Browse to find and select your Powerpoint presentation on your computer. 4. Choose your voice input source here. Utbildningsmiljö, University Library version 1.6, 12
Click on the button Record to start your presentation. Microsoft Powerpoint will start (if you choose to make a presentation) and your webcam window disappears during recording (but records in the background if you have chosen a camera). Do your presentation and click Done when you are finished. You will then be prompted with the preview where you can do final touches and edits (see next chapter) before saving it and upload it to Mymoodle. Utbildningsmiljö, University Library version 1.6, 13
Previewing and editing your recording When you stopped a recording you will be prompted with a Preview window. The same window will appear if you click on the pen next to a recording in your Library. You may now look through your recording and see if it seems ok before you upload it. If you want to edit something, the following tools are there to help you (please note that option 5 and 6 are not available when using Presentations & Lectures). 1. Play/pause your recording 2. Timeline showing you where in the recording the playhead (vertical blue line) is and what you are seeing in the main screen. 3. Trim tool used to trim parts of the recording in the beginning and/or the end. When clicked you will be presented with two handles (blue dots) underneath the time line. Drag them to choose a section in the beginning or the end that you want to remove. Press play to review your edit before applying it. Utbildningsmiljö, University Library version 1.6, 14
4. Chop tool used to remove sections within the recording. When clicked you will be presented with two blue handles on the timeline. Drag them to select a section that you want to remove. Press play to review your edit before applying it. 5. Titles allows you to add a title text in the beginning of your recording. Please note that we add a bumper video in the beginning of every recording. 6. Credits allows you to add a finishing text at the end of your recording. 7. Cancel cancels the edit without saving it and takes you back to your library. 8. Apply click on this to actually apply the edit you make with a tool. By clicking on another tool before hitting Apply you will loose your edit. 9. Done saves your edits and returns you to your library. Utbildningsmiljö, University Library version 1.6, 15
