1 Early Autumn Term Dates and October 2016 Please find below the early autumn term dates for your reference. The dates and times are correct at the time of publication. They may change due to unforeseen circumstances, although we plan carefully to ensure this does not happen unnecessarily. Parents are informed of the changes as soon as possible via the school text messaging and service and updates to the school calendar on our website. Parents are asked to refer to both the whole school events and dates for their children s year group when planning their diaries. Reminder Holiday Dates Monday 5 th & Tuesday 6 th Teacher Training Days School closed to children Event Wednesday 7 th Monday 24 th Friday 28 th October Wednesday 21 st December Pupils in Years 1 to 6 Return to School Nursery and Reception pupils will receive individual notification of the date they are to start school as pupils will join on a staggered start basis. HALF TERM WEEK Pupils return to school on Monday 31 st October LAST DAY OF TERM School finishes at 2.40pm. Friday 9 th The Big Friendly Read, Hillingdon Library Summer Reading Challenge From Saturday 16 th July All children are encouraged to take part in the London Borough of Hillingdon s summer reading challenge. More information can be found on their website at: To tie in with the summer reading scheme, we will be running a competition to reward the class in each Key Stage that has read the most and also the pupils who have read the most in each class. Children will need to bring in evidence of their completion of the reading scheme by Friday 9 th for a special assembly. A member of The Elliot Foundation Academy Trust

2 Tuesday 13 th Small Hall Friday 23 rd 9.10am Monday 26 th Friday 30 th 9am 10am Small Hall Wednesday 5 th October Thursday 6 th and Friday 7 th October Roald Dahl s Birthday Celebration Children and staff will be celebrating what would have been the fabulous author s 100 th birthday. We will be marking the occasion in school with a special prize giving assembly to reward the winners of the Summer Reading Challenge. We would like children to join in the celebrations in one of the following ways: - Dressing up as their favourite Roald Dahl character; - Wearing an item of yellow clothing (Roald Dahl s favourite colour); - Bringing a copy of their favourite Roald Dahl book in to school and telling their class about the story; or - Creating something inspired by Roald Dahl, such as their own Dream Jar (no glass please) or a collection of photos from the Dream Jar Trail as mentioned in the reading newsletter. (Please visit to learn more about the Trail.) Meet the Specialist Teachers An informal opportunity for parents to meet our specialist Modern Foreign Language, Computing and PE teachers. Harvest Festival Assembly This year the school will be collecting food items to donate to Hillingdon Foodbank, who provide support to local families in crisis. Children are encouraged to bring one item of non-perishable food in to school on this day. Please visit the Foodbank s website for more information about this worthy cause and to see a list of the most urgently needed donations. European Day of Languages The European Day of Languages is an annual event held to celebrate the 6,000+ languages spoken around the world, promote language learning and have some multilingual fun. We will be celebrating the event throughout the week at school, starting with a special assembly. In the meantime, if children would like to learn more about language diversity they can visit the EDL website to access fun facts and activities: FR/Default.aspx Macmillan Coffee Morning The World s Biggest Coffee Morning, is Macmillan s biggest fundraising event for people facing cancer. All parents are invited to join us for a cup of coffee (or tea!) and a slice of cake to raise money for this worthy cause. Walk to School Day International Walk to School Day is a global event that involves communities from more than 40 countries walking and biking to school on the same day. Fairy Tale Themed Reading and Writing Event Each year group will focus on a traditional Fairy Tale. Starting on Thursday 21 st, children will have an opportunity to enjoy a special cinema, themed hotdog lunch, and then watch an animated adaptation of their Fairy Tale. On Friday, pupils will take inspiration from the movies to learn more about the stories and develop their own reading and writing skills. Page 2 of 5

Dates for Reception There are no dates specifically for Reception children or parents in the first half of the Autumn Term: children will be focusing on settling in to their new school, making friends and learning new routines. 4 Dates for Year 3 Year 3 Events An informal opportunity for parents of pupils in Year 3 to meet their child s class Dates for Year 4 From Friday 9 th Tuesday 13th Wednesday 12 th October Year 4 Events Swimming Lessons In Year 4, pupils will have swimming lessons at Hillingdon Leisure Centre pool. Parents will be notified of the day their child will swim at the start of the Autumn Term. It may be helpful for parents to check that their child has the correct kit for swimming lessons during the summer holidays: a one-piece swim suit (girls) or swimming trunks (boys), a pair of goggles and a towel. Pupils with mid to long hair will also need to wear a swimming cap. An informal opportunity for parents of pupils in Year 4 to meet their child s class Year 4 Visit to the Primary Proms Year 4 pupils will be visiting the Albert Hall to experience live music in one of the world s most famous concert halls. The tickets are free but there will be a cost per child for the coach to transport us to and from the event. Parents may also wish to be aware in advance that children will be returning to school at the later time of approximately 4.30pm. A letter will be sent home at the start of the autumn term with full details. 5 Dates for Year 6 Tuesday 13th Tuesday 13 th 5pm Monday 26 th to Friday 30 th Friday 14 th October Year 6 Events Year 6 An informal opportunity for parents of pupils in Year 6 to meet their child s class Year 6 PGL Meeting This is a meeting for pupils and their parents attending the PGL trip at the end of. Most of the information will already have been provided to parents; this meeting will give us the opportunity to clarify any last minute details and check we have all the required medical information. Year 6 PGL Trip We are aware that some secondary schools may hold their open evenings during PGL week. Please contact the secondary schools directly should you wish to arrange an alternative time and date for you to visit with your child. Most are happy to accommodate this. Please notify the school office in advance if this visit is to take place during the school day and authorised leave will be granted. Year 6 Assembly Parents are invited to attend an assembly to celebrate the achievements of those children who attended PGL and learn more about the project work completed by children who stayed at school. Club Information Further information will be provided to parents about school teams practice sessions early in the new academic year. In addition to clubs for school teams, the school also provides a number of other extra-curricular clubs for pupils at a small cost to parents. Parents are notified of these clubs by letter and spaces are awarded on a first come, first served basis. Sports Events Further information will be made available to pupils participating in the sporting events listed closer to the date of the competition. Pupils are selected to represent the school based on their performance during PE lessons and lunchtime sport zone sessions.
