Basics of Spanish To provide the basics of proper Spanish pronunciation, simple phrases and instruction on how to use the HSUS Spanish Phrases booklet.

3 So Why must we learn Spanish? Growing Population Untapped resource of adopters, patrons and donors Nielsen: Latinos are no longer just a sub-segment of the economy, but a prominent player in all aspects of American life. Public Relations Safety Shows community engagement regardless of language barriers You can t choose the people who provide help or prevent you from getting hurt

4 So Why must we learn Spanish? Because its part of our mission to end overpopulation A study in the Journal of Applied Animal Welfare Science showed that in a Hispanic community 11% of owned dogs and 27% of owned cats were altered, a shocking number compared to the APPA s estimation that 78% of owned dogs and 88% of owned cats are sterilized nationally.

6 Hispanic vs. Latino Hispanic Describes people from or descending from Spanishspeaking countries. Including Spain, 19 countries in Latin America and 1 in Africa Latino Refers to people using languages derived from Latin including Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese and Romanian. In a more narrow sense, Latino refers to people from or descending from Latin America.

7 Percent Hispanic of the Total Population in the United States: 1970 to 2050 Hispanics are the fastest growing ethnic segment expected to grow 167 percent from 2010 to 2050, compared to 42 percent for the total population. At over 17% of the U.S. Total population they are the largest minority *Projected Population as of July 1

12 How we Communicate Recently a UCLA Study indicated that 93% of communications effectiveness is Non-Verbal. 7% of the message is the words used 38% is the Voice chosen 55% is the other Paralanguage. I DID NOT TAKE THAT MONEY

13 Differences in Latino Communication Cultural Identification Individual pride in specific heritage Regional differences Language Differences Different dialects Most understand Castilian Spanish (Castellano) Household Head of Household Religion Cuisine Large and Strongly bonded families (Aunts/Uncles/Cousins etc )

14 Customer Service comes first Spanish Customer Service Delivery If you need to look something up don t be afraid to ask for a minute using the standard hand gesture Alternatively, buy yourself time and be proactive by using Spanish brochures or reading materials Be patient and remain calm, most will appreciate your efforts Make an effort to use proper pronunciation Memorize numbers, common words and basic nouns. Use Close ended sentences or questions SMILE!!

15 Gathering Information Author Rudyard Kipling explained the skill of questioning in these words: "I have six servants. They've taught me all I know. Their names are Who, What, Where, When, Why and How." If you give your attention to these servants, you will realize they have different roles. When your interest leans toward the factual you will use Who, Where and When (close-ended questions that usually elicit one-word responses). What, Why and How (open-ended) push the door of discovery wide open.
