RHYME ON! SINGING RHYMES Did you know that you could sing nursery rhymes to these familiar tunes? 100 Bottles of Pop on the Wall Yankee Doodle Sweet Betsy from Pike Gilligan s Island Theme Song Hint! This would be a great thing to do as children clean up the room, wash hands for lunch, or during other waiting periods. MOVING RHYMES - Have children patty cake with a partner, clap, march, swim, hula, or make other dance movements to the syllables in nursery rhymes. MISSING WORD Say nursery rhymes leaving out a word or two. Let children supply the missing word. CHARADES Children take turns acting out the rhymes without using words while their friends try and guess who they are.

MOTHER GOOSE CLASS BOOK - Give each child a large sheet of paper (12 x 16 ) and ask her to illustrate her favorite rhyme. Type words for each rhyme using a large font and glue them to the page. Cut the front and back off a paper grocery sack to make the cover for the book. Put children s pictures between the grocery sack, hole punch, and bind with book rings. Note! Make a page that says Illustrators so children can sign their names. Invite children to Dedicate the book. Add the Publisher (class and school, city, state) and Copyright Date. Be sure and add The End on the last page. Hint! To encourage children to make colorful drawings remind them to use as many colors in their pictures as they are in age. For example, if they are four they should use at least 4 colors; five year olds should use 5 colors, etc.

NURSERY RHYME CLUB - Make a poster that says Nursery Rhyme Club. Whenever a child can say a rhyme, she gets to sign her name on the poster. It would also be fun to give children a membership card similar to this one you can download. You will find a link to this membership card in Downloads at the top left.

RHYME PUZZLES - Write lines of nursery rhymes on sentence strips. Place them in a pocket chart and model reading the rhymes. Mix up the strips and see if children can put them back in order. Hint! You can also make rhyme puzzles with a clasp envelope. Make two copies of each rhyme. Glue one to the front of the clasp envelope and cut between the lines (or words) of the other one to make a puzzle. Children place matching words and lines on the front copy.

NURSERY RHYME JUKE BOX - You can use old CDs or cut 5 circles from cardboard for this project. Glue the words of different nursery rhymes to the CDs. Place the CDs in a gift bag or shoebox. Write Juke Box on the front as shown. When you have a few extra minutes, let children take turns choosing a rhyme from the juke box and then leading their classmates in that rhyme.

DRAMATIZE - Let children act out nursery rhymes. *Play follow the leader for Mary Had a Little Lamb. Give children a piece of string (24 long). Children hold one end of the string and walk around the room pretending that it is a leash for their imaginary pet. *Hide paper mittens around the room for children to find for The Three Little Kittens. *Turn a block into a candlestick and let children jump over it for Jack Be Nimble. *Give children play dough to wrap around their thumb like a plumb for Little Jack Horner. SNACKS - Tie in cooking activities and snacks with nursery rhymes. *Eat hard boiled eggs or make egg salad when you do Humpty Dumpty. *Make muffins for The Muffin Man. *Mix cottage cheese and fruit for Miss Muffet s curds and whey. *Let children put their thumb in the middle of a canned biscuit. Put a spoonful of jelly in the hole, bake, and you ll have Jack s Christmas pie.

NURSERY RHYME PARTY - When children are familiar with nursery rhymes, plan a party for their parents or another class. Let children make invitations and involve them in making refreshments. Encourage each child to learn a rhyme and get up and recite it at the party. (If you have a shy child, then pair him with another child and let them recite a rhyme together.) ART - Relate art projects to nursery rhymes. *Give children an oval made out of construction paper for Humpty Dumpty. Let them decorate their oval and then tear it into pieces. Can they glue it back together? *Do cotton ball painting or cotton ball collages for Baa Baa Black Sheep. *Make finger puppets for Jack and Jill. *Make a paper plate clock for Hickory Dickory Dock.

GAMES - Adapt nursery rhyme concepts to games children enjoy playing. *For Little Miss Muffet use a plastic spider to play a game similar to Tisket a Tasket. *Patty cake with a partner for Pat a Cake. *Let each child take off a shoe and hide it around the room for Diddle Diddle Dumpling. *Increase the height of a jump rope as children try to jump over it for Jack Be Nimble. *Create your own nursery rhyme Olympics by tying in large motor skills to nursery rhymes. For example: jumping for Jack Be Nimble, doing an obstacle course for Mary s lamb, skipping with a partner for Jack and Jill, galloping for Ride a Cock Horse, balancing on a foot for Humpty Dumpty, and so forth.

TAKE HOME MINI BOOK -Make a copy of the downloadable nursery rhyme book for each child. Cut the pages apart and put them together to make a book. Practice reading the rhyme on one page each day with your children. After reading the rhyme ask the children to illustrate it. Let children use their imaginations and draw whatever the rhyme means to them. When you ve completed the book, send it home for children to share with their families. Click Downloads in the menu at the left.

PROPS - Download patterns to make visuals to use with the nursery rhymes. Click Downloads in the menu at the top left. Baa Baa Black Sheep File Folder
